Question to the group on functionality.

If you check out the top of the page, you will notice a test tab, which will take you directly to Pets & Animals. Do you like having tabs like this, or do you think that it adds clutter? Also, do you like the leaderboards?

EDIT: How would the group feel about a report feature? This would be a way to report any kind of issue from either an article or a post.

EDIT: DO YOU LIKE THE NEW NEWS TICKER????

The tabs would be fixed, like at most other sites.

I'llregister1 no for the leaderboards.

OK... a vote for the tabs.

The leaderboards here have more to do with level of activity and page views. It is not tied to comments.

Also everyone please notice that I have posted a new question.

I assume the report feature would be anonymous . If so it is subject to abuse . What is the advantage ? Does it alert moderators to potential problems ?

Sure!

The report would go to me directly, much as the email does. All it should do, is make it easier to give me a heads up on a possible problem. It won't collapse anything like it does in other places.

LOL, Request denied!

This is a news site... remember?

The question was really do you like tabs as a quick way to a topic or doing it the way that we have?

Ahh... the report is not anonymous... I would know who you were, and what the problem is, as it gives a box todescribewhat the issue is.

As they say in China... same same, but different.

I got a lot of positive reaction from those emoticons. People seem to think that it makes the site more fun. But I am not opposed to put it up for a vote

Leaderboard seems like no one cares, so I'll probably get rid of it

Tabs.... seems like mixed review. Wait till the evening crowd comes in

Report function. It only reports and I DO know who is doing the reporting. I always hated that collapse feature. It makes for gang warfare and I am not a big fan of that.

Ticker? Worthless, IMO, too slow and doesn't really give you much information.

Tabs? Fine.

Report function, okay with me. But if I were you I would think about this once, twice, then a third time, and maybe a fourth time, fifth, sixth? Talk about being tied to the site? Damn! Frankly, folks can get hold of you by e-mail, no need for an immediate "report" (and incidentally, bother Perrie while at Dinner, etc) feature. But as it is you who will be getting the "reports," up to you.

Leaderboards? Didn't even know they were there, LOL

I kind of like the idea ofcollapsing comments it gauges thecommunity'spulse.I think articles should stand. I would like to see blogs on another page and the Latest Activity to replace it.

No collapsing a comment... that is the negative feature I didn't like

What the report would allow me to do is know if there is spam, bug, abuse, or other...

It would be on each comment and on the articles, although right now I trust everyone will not post articles that are problems.

Where does the "report issue" at the bottom of the current page go to? Seems kinda redundant.

Those are for technical issues and they go to Ning and not to me.

I just realized I am loosing track of my count... I'm going to have to post a poll.

2 cents always wanted.

Love you Terry! You feel my pain! I am hoping that this function also goes to moderators, which would stop the problem of wondering which one will take action, which sometimes happens.

Can't be done... and I think that it sets in motion the ultimate type of censorship. It can divide a community, as you all try to figure out who did it.

Didn't like it on the vine.... I just relistened the vinecast that I was on, with Party's Over... and I never want those kinds of bad feelings here.

tabs....nice but I'm a minimalist sometimes so I say no

leaderboard....never look at it, honestly don't care

report function...to easily abused, don't we already clean up the spammers rather quickly anyway?

ticker....cool

Hi Shel...

Seems that no one even noticed that the leaderboard was there, so I took it down. That was a no brainer.

I had the ticker up all day, and no one liked it... said it moved too slowly. I am going to try and find a better one.

Reporting now is done by email and usually is missing necessary information like which comment is in question. It will not take down a comment, like at NV, just report it to me. It will also report tech issues.

But still...I see your concern. We've all been there and done that... and are gun shy... well not Bruce.

As to the polls :
Tabs for each topic .
I'd like to suggest another possbility . Most of the topics don't get a lot of entries in them . Having a tab for each seems like a waste of "real estate" . What we need IMO is to break down "News & Politics" into smaller categories . Right now there are more than 1000 entries under N&P . It sure would be easier to find stuff if there were subcategories . Does anyone have suggestions about what the subcategories could be ?

I could do that... but we don't want too manycategories... so maybe one for News and one for Politics? Unless there are ones that you can come up with ...

Mike

*Slaps Forehead*

Hey... and to be fair.. we can have the opposite!

But we have to add this:

  1. How Moderates are Right and left
  2. Moderates are better in Bed
  3. Independents Actually Think For Themselves
  4. Gutsy Independents

You get the idea.

Seriously though , here are some possible categories :
Legal issues & court cases
Economy & business
Foreign policy & global issues
Regional issues [east , west , etc]

This is just a first attempt . It might need some tweaking .

BTW , can I assume that subfolders are not available ?

I think we have economy...but I have to check. I we don't that's a keeper.

Legal Issues... not always needed... could be just news, no?

Foreign policy.. good

Regional... maybe to local for this group at this time.

No subfolders

Actually Perrie , that is an interesting idea . Why not use emoticons as topic headings under news & politics .
What stories would go under Tongue.gif
as opposed to 9.gif
or 104.gif
?

Yes to the tabs. I like the shortcut.

I'm not sure we are big enough or mean enough to each other to need a report feature yet, but you are the one who gets all the complaints, so you'd need to be the judge there. That is SOOOmeta that I will completely leave it up to you. If it is there, I assume it is because you think we need it, or because it helpsyou. If it helps you or makes your life easier, I'm all for it.

Leaderboards are fine. Would like to have the method of inclusion clarified, so we all know what is being led, but I don't really do this to get on leaderboard, and have only checked them a couple of times, anyway.

What I'd like to see is something to encourage the readers to "like" or "not like" an article. It's nice to see if people like the work, and we as a community don't seem to hit that button very much.

News Ticker? I don't see that.

Captain,

I would love to see people start to use the like button for the articles. They do seem to forget it and many times they read an article ( you can tell from the views) but no comment and no like, so no feedback. As a person who also writes, I understand your frustration.

I had leaderboards up and no one seemed to notice them, so I took them down. But I can always put up a poll to see how the community feels. Maybe now they would notice them.

As for the report button... it's because none of the mods or I can't be everywhere at one time, so we may miss an infraction.
