Fox news has been putting down the Chevy Volt for quite a while . This video is their way of making amends .
I agree with that assessment now . But that could change .

I have to say that I didn't know many of those political facts that they brought into the conversation. It might change some minds who think that this is part of Obama's master plan.
I think that it's should be the wave of the future.
As the speaker said , if they could cut about 20 % off the price it would be a real competitor . That's where that newer cheaper battery comes in .

The supply of electric power is all about diversity of sources . A power plant can burn just about anything and do it more efficiently than an IC engine can burn gasoline . That's the whole idea . Don't obsess about where the power is coming from . If you're going to obsess , do it about the US addiction to petroleum [in the transportation sector] .
But if you're going to worry about the future sources anyway , the simple abundant answer is found in that video .

There does seem to be a tiny movement towards the new & improved model AP1000 nukes . but in general the distrust of nukes is still there . I think it has to do with the fact that radiation danger cannot be detected by the senses without special instrumentation .

Now you have brought up the real objection : price . If they can reduce the price by about 20 % this will be a real competitor . And especially so as gas prices increase in the next few years .
