Crib Bumpers Could Be Killing More Babies Than Ever
Despite warnings, new report says bumper-related deaths may have tripled
(Newser) – Despite warnings from groups like the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Institute of Health, infant deaths related to padded crib bumpers may have tripled in recent years, Stat reports. A study published Tuesday in the Journal of Pediatrics used data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission to identify 23 bumper-related deaths between 2006 and 2012. That's up from an average of eight during every previous seven-year period starting in 1985, according to Reuters . And it could still be a massive underreporting. "Despite this nationwide publicity…deaths have not decreased, likely because bumpers remain widely available in the marketplace, media articles commonly show cribs with bumpers, and parents often believe bumpers are necessary for comfort and safety," Reuters quotes the study.
Stat reports the padded crib bumpers intended to keep babies safe can actually cover their noses and mouths, leading to suffocation. And Reuters notes the American Academy of Pediatrics has found no proof they actually work. According to the study, it's not clear whether bumper-related deaths are actually increasing or just being reported more. Regardless, the study's authors hope their research will lead to a bumper ban. “Until we get them off of all the store shelves, we’re going to keep seeing these deaths," a child-safety advocate tells Stat. Bumpers are currently banned in Maryland and Chicago, and some Target and Ikea stores have stopped selling them. Bumper manufacturers maintain their product is safe as long as instructions are followed.

Crib bumpers killed 23 infants from 2006 to 2012 and have killed more since. So how are these things still on the market? Why haven't then been banned, parents warned more and told to destroy them? What the hell is the problem here? Is there some sort of super strong pro-crib bumper lobby in Washington?
Follow the money, Randy.
I guess they are profitable for both the stores and the manufactures, but at what cost? It seems to me that's it's been quite awhile since I have heard of a product that has caused this many infant deaths that hasn't been banned. According Maryland and Chicago, but what I don't get is why only some Target and Ikea store have banned them. I would think that it would be chain wide because of liability issues. I mean someone must be suing someone over these deaths. I sure would be.
Once the amount the manufactures and retailers have to pay out in lawsuits reaches a certain point then they'll make a nice business decision and stop selling them, but how man more babies will die a completely preventable deaths. I mean this is a problem they have known about for years! It's inexcusable it hasn't been addressed.
I agree that it should have been addressed a long time ago. Strange about only some Target and Ikea stores banning the. As you said, it should be a system wide ban on them, not just some select stores.
I wonder if there is a regulatory agency in the government who can ban them nation wide. The story mentions the Consumer Product Safety Commission, but I don't know if they have the power to order a recall of thee bumpers or force a ban on the nationwide.
I'm also surprise that this is the first I have heard of it. Why hasn't there been more of national outcry against this? I mean these are babies that are dying needlessly for a product that "the American Academy of Pediatrics has found no proof they actually work." We found out that having children or infants in car seats were being killed by airbags and parents were warned and a regulation was passed to make it possible to turn off the passenger side airbag in case you have no choice but to carry a child in the front, so there must be someone that regulates things like tis and how many babies have to die before that agency does something.
At the very least they ought to come with a warning. I know I'm going to write my Congressman and Senators and ask them why these are still allowed in California and why they haven't been banned here.
