"Please Amputate My Size 16 Foot"

Jeffrey Ortega has Proteus syndrome, which also afflicted the Elephant Man. His feet are so big they only fit 10-year-old Crocs.

A man with a size-16 foot is so miserable he's raising money to get the appendage amputated.

Jeffrey Ortega, 26, of Deerfield Beach, Florida, is afflicted with  Proteus syndrome , a rare genetic mutation that causes overgrowth of bones, skin and tissue in certain body parts, but not in others.

There are only an estimated 2oo cases worldwide.  Joseph Merrick,  better known as the Elephant Man, had the disorder.

Thought this was really interesting. People often confuse this disorder with  Neurofibromatosis Type 1 , which in it's most common form produces nothing more than a brown splotch call a cafe au lait mark, but in it's seever form looks more like    Proteus syndrome . In fact, for a very long time, this is what the doctors thought Joseph Merrick had, until they got hold of his bones were able to do DNA testing.

His feet look nasty , but some people have size 16 feet. They are usually large athletes though.

John,

The point wasn't the size of his feet, but why his feet where that size.  Proteus syndrome  is a very rare condition and I thought the story would be interesting.

Hoping this young man is a viable candidate for a clinical trial that will provide some relief.  Wondering if the amputation would be considered cosmetic surgery?  Surely this would rise to a medical condition requiring remedy.
