Thief River Falls Set to Join SIJHL for 2017 Season --- SWEET!

THUNDER BAY –  Expansion is in the future for the Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL). The league is looking to grow by one team south of the border. “We are extremely excited to bring Junior “A” hockey to the great community of Thief River Falls and the beautiful Ralph Engelstad Arena”, stated SIJHL Commissioner Bryan Graham. “The franchise has a solid ownership group made up of some very familiar names to hockey fans of Thief River Falls and the surrounding area”, added Graham. The ownership group consists of Kevin McCallum of Thunder Bay, Ont., Dave Beito, President of Northern State Bank, Tim Berglund, former NHL player and current head coach of TRF High School boys’ hockey team as well as local businessman and former WCHA official Tom Goddard. A fifth member of the ownership group is expected to be announced at a later date.

The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Friday that it has awarded a conditional expansion franchise to Thief River Falls, Minn., which once confirmed, would begin play in the 2016-17 season.

Awesome! At 30 miles straight to the east, we are in TRF a time or two a month. This is pretty cool and can't wait to start attending games!

:~)

Come on Petey. The first sentence of the article was:

THUNDER BAY – Expansion is in the future for the Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL).

LOL

When my son was about 6 or 8 years old he belonged to a league. He was playing defence when there was a breakaway coming down the ice towards his goal. Since he was all alone and the guy was a lot bigger than him, he did the only thing he could which was to shove his stick into the guy's skate to trip him. He was the only kid in the game to get a penalty, causing the other team to win the game. Fortunately the parents were pretty calm about it. There have been fights in the stands at these mini-minor league games.

Great story and sounds like a worthy penalty to me!
