John Keeley steam engines auction likely to fetch at least £1m
14 May 2016
A collection of 600 rare steam and traction engines is expected to fetch at least £1m at auction.
The Keeley collection, which includes historical engines dating back to the 17th Century, is on sale in Knowl Hill, near Maidenhead.
Steam enthusiast John Keeley acquired the collection of engines over a number of years before he died in 1999.
Mr Keeley ran the Knowl Hill Steam and Country Show in Berkshire for more than 30 years.
Bill King, director of Cheffins Auctioneers, said the auction will be "one of the most significant sales of steam engines in recent times".
Highlights include an "Otto" bicycle, worth between £8,000 and £10,000, a rare 1928 Foden D Type tractor and an 1894 Aveling and Porter steam engine, which is said to be one of only three known worldwide.

When I was growing up in rural Michigan I knew several farmers who collected and restored old tractors and other old farm equipment, some of them steam powered. It's a very expensive hobby because it's surprising how much a restored one is worth, but there were some very impressive collections.
