I am experimenting with ISO numbers as high as 50,000+ as unreal as that seems. I will at some point get out as birds begin their spring migrations and try like hell to get razor sharp photos of birds in flight … without ending up with pictures having excessive "noise/graininess".
I have one fast lens (maximum aperture of 2.8) but it only zooms to 210mm; I can likely get the stop action shots with no grain/noise, but, the birds will likely be at a distance and once I crop the shots to have mostly bird and minimal background, I fear the results will be 5"x7" print size as opposed to 13"x20".
Lots of trade offs in this kind of photography, but I'm experimenting and learning as much as I can before going into the field for the really difficult, but, quite rewarding keepers!
