The First Night of Passover seems as good a time as any, to talk about the difference between doing what may comply with "the law," and "doing what is ethical and humanistic," even when ethics and law are in conflict.
Under the Nazis … during the time known as "The Holocaust," the "law" in Germany made genocide "legal" and the act of protecting Jews from the gas chambers … "illegal".
Righteous Gentiles and Holocaust Rescuers
Some non-Jews stood up to the Nazis, and helped their Jewish neighbors, despite grave dangers.

When humanistic, democratic laws and protocol are sidestepped -- either overtly or surreptitiously via the abuse-of-power, subversion originating from within or from outside a system predicated on law and justice -- or a collusive effort of the two … several outcomes are possible.
The expedient and dishonorable will do whatever necessary to preserve ill-gotten gains -- including the manipulation of, or, misapplication of established law, "stacking the legal deck" against the proverbial "day in court," or simply using political might to bring the wheels of justice to a self-serving halt!
Currently, we have in America, all of the above, these in terms of the stonewalling of an investigation into in an election that has known irregularities known improprieties; but, here will be "rescuers" -- individuals who at first will proceed as the-law-of-the-land proscribes; and they will be mocked, falsely portrayed and bombarded by a barrage of propaganda. But when they've had enough of trying to do the right thing for the right reason … only to be denied by the dishonorable power brokers and their willing shills …
… THEY WILL DO THE "WRONG THING FOR THE RIGHT REASON" … they will extricate the truth albeit likely through the leaking of information … and those who exploited and benefitted from such leaking, will find themselves having been metaphorically beaten by their own stick, and, hypocritically decry the poetic justice.
And though they will know that they were on the side of DOING THE WRONG THING FOR THE WRONG REASON … all that will matter is that JUSTICE PREVAILED despite the efforts of the unjust.

Dear Friend AMac: Good points one and all.
Thought provoking.
Glad you posted this.
Human law is a best efforts basis.
It is not clean, pure or always well intended.
Even when it is, it is still far from perfect.
Consider the sources of human law.
