PHOTO CHALLENGE - Your favourite photos in 15 categories
Anyone who says his/her hobby is photography is bound to have a great collection of photographs, in fact a virtual library full. Even if it ISN'T their hobby, a great number of people take photos often enough, whether it be family or on vacations or sometimes just for fun. Now is the time to sift through your photo collection and meet this challenge.
Here is a list of 15 categories, and the challenge is to post one or two of your FAVOURITE photos that you yourself took for each category, and provide an explanation for each photo, such as describing the situation where and when you took it, what it is about, why you think it is one of your best photos.
I am going to provide examples as a guide for you to follow. You may have seen many of my photos before.
Here are the categories:
1. Colour, 2. Black and White, 3. Landscape, 4. Portrait, 5. Night, 6. Flowers. 7. Inanimate Object, 8. Sport, 9. Sunrise/Sunset, 10. Children, 11. Animals/Birds/Insects, 12. Seasons, 13. Architecture, 14. Creative Editing, 15. Your Choice of Anything Not LIsted (as long as it's a favourite photo).
If you can't provide either one or two examples for any of those categories, don't fret, just post for as many categories as you can. Here is your chance to display your favourite photos for all to see. This has been my most ambitious challenge so I'm not too sure whose creative works we will see.
Here are my examples as a guide:
1. Colour
This is a Buddhist monk meditating at the side wall of The White Horse Temple in Luoyang, China. I have named the photo Primary Colours.
This was taken in the Emperor's palace in Kaifeng, China. I call this one The Little Emperor.
2. Black and White
When I was a little boy I used to go and sit on a hillside and watch the trains near my grandfather's store in Hamilton, Ontario. Then, about 30 years later I went back with my Canon F1 SLR film camera and took this photo from the same spot. I call it Tracks.
About 5 years later, using the same camera, I took this photo while on a hillside near the Canadian Parliament Buildings of a sailboat on the Ottawa River in Canada's capital. In those days I used to develop my own film and enlarge and develop my photos in my darkroom. For this photo I used a special silvery paper.
3. Landscape
I just posted this on another article, but it's one of the best Landscape photos I've taken here. It depicts the famous Chinese Karst Mountains near Yangshou not far from the Li River.
I guess you could call this a landscape. It's the entrance to a Geological Park near Luoyang, China.
4. Portrait
Someone once told me this photo was a "magazine cover". It is a photo of my nephew's wife holding a child (which is not her own) at the wedding of her younger sister in Zhengzhou, China.
And then there's my wife - taken not long ago in Chongqing, where we live. Chongqing used to be known at the time of WWII as Chunking, when the American Flying Tigers were based there. There is a movie made about the Flying Tigers.
5. Night
Some of my most favourite photos were taken here at night. This was taken during Lantern Festival in Chongqing.
Looking across the Jialing River at downtown Chongqing. Chongqing is where the Jialing River flows close to this point into the Yangze River, which is one of China's major rivers.
6. Flowers
This Lotus flower is one of the best flower photos I've ever taken - it was within walking distance of where we live now in Chongqing.
And not to be undone, also within walking distance of where we live, Water Lilies.
7. Inanimate Object
There are a lot of things I can post for this, but I'll just stick with this one, taken in the main Provincial Museum in Zhengzhou.
8. Sport
Back in Toronto's Skydome, during a Blue Jay's game many years ago, I was in a corporate box with my Canon F1 SLR this time with colour film, when I took this lucky shot. Even with using 1/2000th of a second shutter speed I was surprised it would stop the motion of the ball which when hit was probably going about 200 mph cross-wise.
9. Sunrise/Sunset
Sunrise at my log chalet on Gull Lake in the Haliburton Lake district of Ontario. One of the best memories of my life is of sitting on the dock watching the sunrise through the rising mist and listening to the Loon calls echoing down the lake, while drinking a big cup of "Gull Lake Coffee" (2/3rds coffee, 1/3rd Baillie's Irish Cream).
Sunset over the Yellow River near Zhengzhou. The Yellow River in that area is considered the cradle of China. I have rarely seen a colourful sunset here.
10. Children
Can you believe this face?
Dressed to kill.
11. Animals/Birds/insects
Tried a long time and finally got a butterfly shot. Birds here are too timid and not too colourful.
12. Seasons
Spring - both colours of flowers are on the same tree. I guess it depends on the stage of developing.
Summer - Poppies in Suchou, known as the Venice of China because of its many canals.
Fall - The leaves turn red and gold - taken in Zhengzhou.
Winter - the pool in my brother's back yard back in Canada. Sorry, no swimming today, but do you have skates?
13. Architecture
Roof lines and eaves - highly decorated. I don't remember where I took this photo.
The library at the university campus across the road from where we live. The clock imitates London's Big Ben electronically.
14. Creative Editing
I don't have the tools to do this well. Here is a set of before and after of a street in a small town near Chongqing taken during Chinese New Year.

The Peking Opera, one of the noisiest things you can imagine. It is said that you do not know China unless you have done these three things - climbed The Great Wall, eaten Peking Duck, and watched the Peking Opera. I've done all 3.

There doesn't seem to be many photographers left on NT notwithstanding 110 members of the Photography (Creative Arts) group. Or if there are any, they're more interested in fighting political battles on the Front Page than trying to make NT a more diversified and interesting place to be. Other than you, a whole day and not even a fucking comment good or bad. I have already deleted one challenge for total lack of interest, so I'm getting ready to delete this one as well, but will wait to see your contributions to it.

I am new here and still learning to navigate this new site after newsvine. Do I post my photos as a reply to your post, or is there a different method? - amateur photog. 🙄
I said that WAY beck when almost nobody showed any interest. Since that time this has become a very busy article, as ypu can see. I posted an article about posting photos which you will find if you click on the " words on the werds " "NT HELP" at the top of the every NT page. Hippocretes of Cos has already told you to scroll to the bottom of the articles and you will see the window for you to post comments. Click on the little piece of film strip to the left of the smiey at the bottom right of the banner on top of the window and it will seek a photo in your library for you to post.
I will never delete this article, which has so many members' great contributions on it.

It's a matter of sheer volume; there is so much activity on the front page that everything moves up, down or off ... Often before some articles get a single comment.
This comment will hopefully bring people to your discussion which quite worthy.

I posted a photo essay in the group this morning, from my latest trip. Of course, it disappeared in a few seconds, as it didn't have anything to do with Antifa and White Supremacists.

Back home and getting into a regular routine; much of what I posted while away was via my cell phone -- tedious and prone to all kinds of errors.
Later today I will take the challenge and attempt to satisfy ALL CATEGORIES … but ONE-AT-A-TIME so that each image legitimately hits the FP.
I took hundreds of new photos while away and possibly, as I get to them, some will be posted as part of this challenge.
Excellent participation here after a slow start -- not because the challenge isn't worthy -- but because of the volume of comments on the FP.
Moderating duties are taking up quite a bit of my time...

My wife could wander through that field and come back with a meal of edible greens in half an hour.
heh, heh, heh,...and a pair of legs full of ticks. This was our property in South FL. Hogs, turkeys, all sorts of critters.
No such problem anywhere around where we live. We don't even have a problem with mosquitoes. Every lamppost along every road has these bug lights hanging from them. I've been here since January, we have no screens on our windows and they are always open, yet I haven't had a mosquito bite yet.
Now THAT is just the best! We just went through Hurricane Irma and the first creature to pop out was mosquitoes by the (whatever grandiose count one would give) after day two I went on the offensive. Did mine and my neighbors on both sides, we've been mosquito free for over a week, the local Gov, is "considering" contracting aerial spraying. These would be a great idea in my small little city.
I think I'll bring this up Tuesday at the Commissioner's meeting. Thanks!

Large Milkweed Bugs & Juveniles on Milkweed Seed Pod

FYI:
Adults wander during the daytime in search of food since milkweeds live in patches that can vary in size and distance apart from one another. When a seed is found, they inject saliva into it through a long rostrum, this pre-digests the seed and allows O. fasciatus to suck it up through their anterior pump and pharynx. Often there are multiple adults feeding on one seed, suggesting there is a signal released by feeding individuals that indicate a good food source. It has been shown that adults are more likely to find a food source when there is already another adult feeding on it, further supporting the signaling concept. Occasionally, females are seen feeding on shedding exoskeletons from moulting individuals. Rarely, cannibalization is observed in laboratory settings. [16]
Juvenile O. fasciatus require the seed of milkweed plants for development and growth. Adults can survive on other types of seeds such as: sunflower, watermelon, almond and cashew, as shown in lab populations. Nymphs live in large groups of about 20 individuals on the plant. [7] Juveniles have an advantageous discontinuous 3 part gut that acts similarly to a crop, ventriculus and ileum however they are lacking definitive parts. During the final instar of development oil accumulates to allow for more efficient absorption of nutrients as well as aid in osmoregulation .

Didn't I read somewhere in here that you restore older photography formats?
Pretty sure I still have them in a box somewhere but...How are you on tin types? Interested if I find them?
If you can get a decent scan of a tin type or any other photo that needs restoration, post it in any Photography & Art Forum discussion and note that you'd like it restored … and I'll try my best, after which, I'll post the restoration in the same discussion.
Tin types are generally more difficult than prints in that their surfaces often make them difficult to scan.
But let's try … but please, just post one-at-a-time.
