Colorful Illustrations That Explain the Meanings of Common Australian Idioms

Poke in the Eye

The travel site HotelClub ( previously ) has created a colorful series that illustrates and explains several common Australian idioms that are probably a bit unfamiliar to those who live outside that particular area.

Today we take a trip down Australias linguistic lane. We asked Australian illustrator and animator Jared Atkins to depict some typical as well as some of the more quirky Australian sayings you might come across on your next trip.

Dunny Door

Cat Jumps

Frog in a Sock

Cut Snake

Tickets on Yourself

Lizard Drinking

I always find Australian idioms and slang to be hilarious and illustrative - while still being amazingly informative

I hope you all enjoy them as much I do

Do you have a favorite piece of slang or a colloquialism that you would like to share, with or without a graphic of course

Thanks for the feedback and the story - hilarious

Idioms and slang certainly vary from country to country and being able to understand them is key being able to communicate and socialize when we visit other countries.

I have a list of Hillbilly terms that are really funny, and a list of terms on "How to talk Southern" that is a riot.

Being a hillbilly of sorts and a redneck in the eyes of some, I would love to see those

No one wants to thought of as a furiner

Thanks for the feedback

Ok, RW, my great grandmother's nickname was "Fanny", for Mary Francis. She would have had a fit to know what it became in English terms!
