NYC explosion: Suspect in custody after ‘terror-related incident’ in subway
A suspected terrorist wearing an “improvised low-tech explosive device” detonated his potentially-deadly payload inside a New York City subway passage during the Monday morning rush hour, injuring him and three other people and causing commuter chaos at one of the city’s key traffic hubs.
Suspect Akayed Ullah ’s device went off in the 42nd Street passageway between 7th and 8th avenues and he was later taken into custody, NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said.
The incident happened at about 7:20 a.m. in the busy underground tunnel near both the Times Square subway station and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. All of the injuries were non-life-threatening, according to the Fire Department of New York.
Ullah, 27, was wearing a pipe bomb-based device that was affixed to his body with Velcro and zip ties, NYPD deputy commissioner John Miller said. Officials said he was taken to Bellevue Hospital on Manhattan's east side with burns and other wounds.
Earlier, law enforcement officials told NBC News the suspect was the only person hurt and sustained a minor injury.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called the explosion an "attempted terror attack" and said there were no additional known incidents.
"Thank God the perpetrator did not achieve his ultimate goals. Thank God our first responders were there so quickly to address the situation," de Blasio said. He called the situation "incredibly unsettling" for New Yorkers, 6 million of whom rely on the subway for their commutes every day.
Law enforcement officials told NBC News that the device either went off prematurely or only partially detonated,
Former NYPD commissioner Bill Bratton said preliminary information indicated that the explosion was carried out in the name of ISIS.
The incident, in the heart of the city, caused chaos for morning commuters. Emergency vehicles that stretched for blocks rushed to the scene, causing major evacuations in the massive transit hub. Subway lines were thrown into disarray, with at least 10 bypassing the Times Square and 42nd Street/Port Authority stops.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said an explosion in a subway station is "in many ways, one of our worst nightmares," but said "the reality turns out better than the initial expectation."
"We're not going to allow them to disrupt us. That's exactly what they want, and that is exactly what they're not going to get," he said.
With the area around Port Authority closed off, streets that would normally be bustling with commuters were eerily empty. Bystanders took photos with their phones as police and fire vehicles whizzed by.
The explosion rattled New Yorkers. Two students who were about to swipe into the subway said that they were trying to get to school when they heard the noise.
"I was about to swipe in my card and out of nowhere, we heard a really loud bang, everyone said 'get out, get out!'" Ali, 18, who declined to give his last name, said.
His friend, Saidou Choudhury, 19, said the explosion "sounded like it was deep inside."
"I was traumatized," he said.
other commuter, Isham Chowdhury, was on a bus bound for Port Authority when the explosion went off. He said he got to the terminal about 10 minutes afterwards.
"They were closing the entrance due to the attack. Everyone was calm, but we knew it wasn't normal," Chowdhury said. "The escalators were shut."
The terror incident happened a mere six weeks after a truck driver deliberately drove down a bike path in lower Manhattan, killing eight people in the deadliest terror attack in New York City since Sept. 11, 2001.
The Port Authority Bus Terminal is the nation's largest bus terminal, with about 230,000 passengers passing through it on a typical weekday, its website says.
President Donald Trump was briefed on the incident, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

Sorry, links probably won't work. Thank God that the device went off prematurely or was a fizzle. Only a few people other than this piece of human filth hurt. Also, I'm glad they are calling it what it is: Terrorism.
Oh....the funny irony
WTF does that mean? Try explaining yourself in comments.
Oh.....just that the last two mass shootings had the classic earmarks of a domestic terrorist attacks, but yet somehow they were never called what it is.....ironic isn't it?
Actually they were, but why have the investigations gone silent.
They have? When?....has Trump came out a said it?
But I do agree with you on why has the investigations gone silent?
I couldn't help but notice that this was called Terrorism......almost immediately......I seem to remember a day during a Previous Presidency.....that they waited.....before coming to that conclusion......even when it was so Obvious it was indeed Terrorism.
Umm.....maybe the fact that the attacker immediately confessed to it being a terrorist act, kind of helps them immediately label it as terrorism.
But since you want to go there I seem to remember 2 mass shootings that had labeling of terrorist attacks, but the current Administration decided we need prayers instead of labels!
All I can say is Wow.
And yet you would accept Obama's weak-ass explanation that the Fort Hood terrorist killings were "work place violence"?
It wasn't Obama's explanation it was the DoD, who based that designation off the law
There you go again. Passing the buck for obama again.
If by passing the buck you mean giving you facts.......then yeah I'm most certainly am!
You have facts? Why dont you ever share them?
Really? Then how come Congress had to pass a law to change the definition of what can be declared a terrorist attack? Why change something that going by you all is already on the books?
This idiot shouldn't be called a "Suspect"......He is an "Enemy Combatant"......Send his sorry ass to Gitmo.
Why? The primary purpose of Gitmo is to detain "enemy combatants" so as to get information and intelligence from them, this was an ISIS inspired attack committed by a lone wolf......what would be the purpose of sending him to Gitmo?
That's easy.....because he is by Definition an "Enemy Combatant".
Legal Definition of enemy combatant
Legal Definition of lawful combatant
Why are so worried about what happens to a POS like this " bomber"?
Oh thats right! You must think that his actions will make the current administation look bad so he is yoyr vest bud now. You know that whole "enemy of my enemy is my friend" thing.
And you know this is a 'Lone Wolf' Attack because of your experience watching Blue Bloods on Television? I'm sure there is time for an investigation into this-just because he was alone doesn't mean he didn't have help or guidance. I don't think he should be shipped to Gitmo, I think he should be put in Gen Pop at Rikers Island.
Exactly................
And at Gitmo he'd be a hero to the "enemy combatants" held there.
Why waist the fuel?
In fact they should just hand him over to the bomb squad so they can help him detonate himself in a safe area.........
No.....get all the info that he has.....and then let him blow himself up.
You still didn't answer my question....what purpose would it serve to send him to Gitmo when the primary purpose of it is not needed?
So basically you cant answer the question either.......good to know!
Interesting....So you didn't think the Texas shooting wasn't a lone wolf attack? What about the First Baptist Church Shooting? Did you question if that was a lone wolf attack? The reason it was considered a lone wolf is because authorities have investigated and confirmed that he has no links....thereby being a lone wolf!
It's obvious you don't know the purpose of that facility, the nature of those that are being held there or the laws governing it's use. I know I'm reaching but try to educate yourself.
And it's also obvious you don't have a clue either......because you are under the assumption that they can just take someone there and they disappear forever, or that it's around the clock torture just for the sake of torture?! I know full well the purpose, nature and laws for it's use......my question is WHY do we need to send him there when putting him in a federal prison would be just a sufficient?....waiting
Yeah, keep thinking that.
You didn't answer my question either.
Ok.....What's the difference between putting him in Gitmo or ADX supermax? ADX Supermax gives Gitmo a run for their money in regards to conditions plus he would be in there with the worse of the worse....so once again why are you so stuck up on sending him to Gitmo?
THAT is what tells me you don't know what the purpose of Gitmo is.
Are you starting to see the difference or do I have to get the crayons out?
Comedy! And look up what the term enemy combatant means in regards to the AUMF! It means any ALLEGED MEMBER of al Queda or the Taliban (which includes ISIS)! (oops!)
And since this attack was done on US soil to US citizens they are considered US criminals!
No Gitmo is for enemy combatants are alleged members of al Qaeda or Taliban....or can you site any other terrorists that have been captured who are at Gitmo not a part of either?
Comedy! You have know idea what the ADX supermax prison is do you?! Timothy McVeigh was at ADX, Robert Hanssen, Ted Kaczynski, not to mention Zacarias Moussaoui, Eric Rudolph, John Walker Lindh (interesting this piece of trash was actually captured as an enemy combatant during the 2001 Afghanistan invasion, but somehow never made it to Gitmo as you claimed they should all go) Mahumd Abouhalima, and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev....but in your mind all these terrorist are dumbasses?!
Ok?! And?!......how is that an argument for placing him in Gitmo instead of one of the worse prisons in the country?Prisoners in Supermax are afforded freedoms under US law
And.......Thanks for proving my point! You actually think somehow in Gitmo, torture and inhumane treatment will be commonplace and assume that's what they'll get!
No I see where you're coming from loud and clear.......and so does everyone else!...I just you would have to stones and clearly say the reason why you are so adamant about him going to Gitmo instead of hiding behind this enemy combatant crap
The bomber is from Bangladesh. Is Trump going to add that country to his absurd travel ban, or will people finally admit that the travel ban does jack shit about countering terrorism?
Nope. He didnt add Saudi Arabia either where 19 of the 9/11 hijackers came from...hell trump sold them a billion dollars worth of weapons...weird how that works...
Exactly.
Any travel ban that doesn't include Saudi Arabia is a BS travel ban, and it just meant to quell those who don't think.
Hey Perrie!
Good to see you!
Just wondering if you know what Administration Identified the Countries in the Travel Band as "Countries of Concern"....
And? So that meant that Trump couldn't have added Saudi Arabia to that list......you know seeing as though he really wanted to stop terrorism from coming to this country!
The Obama Admin wouldn't even call Saudi Arabia a Country of Concern.....did you complain about that?
Weird indeed!
And of course this is weird as well, eh?
Under Obama, the United States Has Sold More Than $115 Billion in Weapons to Saudi Arabia .

The State Department has also approved sales to the Saudis of $1.29 billion worth of bombs—“smart” and otherwise—together with $1.15 billion worth of tanks, and half a billion dollars of ammunition.
And that, in total, is only a small part of the $115 billion total in military sales the United States has offered Saudi Arabia since President Obama took power in 2009.
The countries on the list are ones that are currently in active conflict and/or have little in the way of confirming needed info in potential vusters to thus country or have been found to be unreliable or unwilling to cooperate with us to keep out terrorists.
Obama never tried to ban Muslims though!
Neither has Trump. All he did was put a moratorium on granting visas to people from certain select countries.
OK let's clarify something.
NYers are very for real people. We call out terrorism whenever it happens. This has gone on through all administrations, since our police commissioner is the person who makes the call, and not the Prez. This also happened with the Time Square attempt in 2010, under Obama. He is sentenced for life for terrorism.
We are a city with a big fat target on it's back, and the people of NY stand strong, and in defiance of any lunatic who is so full of hate, that they need to do an act of terrorism. I am glad that this was was foiled and that he will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
I agree with you about New Yorkers.......but IMO....there is a general difference between now and then.....Fort Hood comes to mind.
Why do people still insist on further this Fort Hood lie! It wasn't Obama's call to label it as terrorism because DoD guidelines at that time made it so it couldnt be labeled an act of terrorism! Before the Fort Hood shooting, the federal guidelines were the person had to be affiliated with a terrorist organization or group in order for it to be labeled an act of terrorism, During the investigation it was confirmed that even though Hasan had contact with Anwar al-Awlaki he was never affiliated or a part of any known terrorist groups but his attack was inspired by ISIS so it didn't meet the criteria to be labeled. Because of the labeling the surviving soldiers were not able to receive purple hearts, or family members allowed to get all the benefits for the victims, so it literally took an act of Congress 5 years later to get the guidelines changed to include attacks inspired by foreign domestic terrorist organizations.....Once again the LAW at the time stated it was workplace violence, NOT Obama
And Obama used his "Pen and Phone" for all sorts of things to bypass the Law......but didn't lift a finger to assist here.....
Out of respect for SpikeGary......I'm done discussing this here.
Not what this story is about. If you want to talk about something else, write your own story.
That comment was intended for unchained, Mr. Frost and even you, dear Perrie.
Nope. Trump's ban was aimed at curtailing foreign terrorism, therefore my post remains valid and on topic.
You wrote this story?
If you look in the upper left hand corner, you can see that I posted it and as the person that posted, I moderate it. Your off-topic comment(s) are not welcome.
Just asking. No need to get mad, you said you wrote it, i was just asking for clarification.
Where did I say I wrote the story? A bit of projection on your part, it seems.
Has CNN gotten around to reporting this or are they still obsessing over Trumps diet soda drinking habit?
CNN was reporting it @5:15am pacific time, which is when i got up so the answer to your intended insult is, "yes".
My favorite kind of terrorist attack, one in which they only succeed in hurting themselves.
The problem is, he injured 3 other people, besides the unknown amount of mental injuries that will surface in the days, weeks, months and even years to come.
Sorry radio reports were saying there were no other injuries, anyway I hope everyone except the idiot terrorist gets better soon.
Lol mental effects are overrated (imo). I was over my first one minutes after it happened.
Well, NYC is a bastion of the left, so there will undoubtedly be some snowflakes affected.
No offense but plse spare me the divisive political rhetoric. I'm not a fan of it being done from either side.
Maybe he was a graduate of the "Achmed the dead terrorist" school of terrorism.
Given the outcome he may not have been a graduate, lol.
Just being in that school is a hazardous occupation!
Lol, thanks for starting off my morning with a chuckle.
The article is about an attacker who intended to do mass murder and failed. It is not about travel bans, Trump, what color socks he wears, etc. If you want to go on about something that is not in this story, go write your own. Last warning.
An attacker tried to kill people and failed. I would add to that but the seeder said that's literally all we can talk about.
Good. I hope it hurts. Stupid lunatic.
