Amtrak train derails in Washington state onto Interstate 5; 'multiple fatalities' reported

It is important to remember, Obama cut all funding to rail transportation.  The blood of these people is on Obama's hands.

It is important to remember, Obama cut all funding to rail transportation.

Umm....you better try that one again!

The Republican-led House Appropriations Committee voted 30-21 to reduce grants to Amtrak by $252 million -- a drop of about 15% from last year's level. The cut would apply only to Amtrak's capital spending and wouldn't touch funding levels for safety and operations. The measure still needs to clear the full House and Senate before it would go into effect in October.
Democrats on the panel fought unsuccessfully to boost Amtrak funding by $1 billion, to $2.4 billion. But Republicans argued that such a spending increase would need to be offset by cuts elsewhere in the budget, and they admonished Democrats for pointing to the derailment in an effort to increase funding for the passenger rail service.
Oops!
The blood of these people is on Obama's hands.
Never letting a tragedy go to waste huh? Even if you have to lie to do it!

It had nothing to do with funding...this was a "high speed" train that Democrats want to install everywhere, and was going too fast.

The Chinese were imported to help America build the railway across the country a long time ago. If America wants to upgrade to high speed trains (here they travel at 300 kmh and even faster - I've had the pleasant experience of being a passenger on them) they need to import more Chinese rail technicians to help them do it.

Of course such a network of bullet trains would pose serious competition for domestic airlines. The trains run from inside cities (compared to outlying airports that take longer times to reach) and so save time in addition to their running speed.

I don't know if I would feel safe in something going that fast running on magnets.

It wasn't a high speed train.  The track only allows trains to go 79 mph and Monday was the first day that track had ever been used, and the first train to use it jumped the track.  Sounds like improperly constructed track to me.

It could be but the speed on most of that track was 79 mph.  And, high speed trains usually have a max speed near 200 mph.  Most Amtrack trains go less than 100 mph at all times.

Tell the seeder that.......Just because you all believe Trump's crap about CNN being fake news doesn't negate the fact that Obama nor the Democrats tried to cut ANY funding from Amtrak.......the blood lies squarely on Republican hands and we have the Congressional votes to prove it!

Funding appears to be relatively constant.

Congress takes Amtrak's profits into account when hashing out the grants which accounts for some of the flatness and minute decline in 2016.

All in all, the statement under the photo, "It is important to remember, Obama cut all funding to rail transportation."

appears to be completely false.....even "Pants on Fire" false.

Not when you consider the steep increases that Obama imposed on rail doing business.  Increase the Cost = Decrease the funding.

simple concept really.

BS

Your statement was that Obama "cut all funding" which is easily refuted.

Your statement that Obama raised Amtrak ticket prices is equally disingenuous.

Taxes increase and Oil prices fluctuate. Everyone has to deal with it, it's all factored in to the daily operations.

The steep increase is a myth in your own mind.

Amtrak has a 18.6 Billion dollar operating budget and covers 94% by ticket sales.

CSX continues to grow and profit, running on the same fuel.........

Hey genius, what do you think fuels Amtrak trains??

Not only did Obama raise the ticket price, he lowered the amount of cash available for maintenance, effectively defunding any safety measures that would have been achieved by the railroads.

More nonsense.

Congress funds Amtrak by two separate grants, one for daily operations, one for construction.  Safety could fall into either category but that's neither here or there.

Amtrak covered 94 percent of its costs in 2016 with ticket sales but relies on government funding for capital investment and repairs. It currently operates on an annual budget of                   $18.6 billion.

Currently Trumps 2018 budget cuts Amtraks budget by at least 13% and reportedly removes the construction budget to other projects, effectively a possible 40% cut.

I wonder, to whom will you assign the blame when the ticket prices double?

From Trainorders (Railfan Paysite) this was first revenue run of a train on new route, all new or rebuilt track.  Speed speed drops from 80 to 30 for curve where train derailed.  This is just before bridge over interstate that train fell off of.  Alignment of curve and bridge were from where older route was used, track was new.

Positive Train Control was not yet in use here

I read this morning that the train was doing 80 MPH in a 30 MPH zone.......that is likely the causation.......doesn't really have to do with infrastructure, has to do with physics.
