Ode to the Folksongs and Folklore Group, soon to be deleted

Ode to the Folksongs and Folklore Group, soon to be deleted

Mirror mirror on the wall, who's the only folkie at all?

No more than YOU my dear friend Buzz, and you should know that's true because

Who is here that you can see - there are no more than only three.

No stories posted, musicians told, its time this group was made to fold.

Folk music has been dead for years, so what's the use of shedding tears?

Anyway....

Hey, that's no way to say goodbye.....

Don't be so down Buzz, you're not alone.

I'm a fan of folk music and the old folk stories as well I just don't use this site as a go to for either.

Just so happens that Sirius XM "Coffee House" is playing in the background as we speak. ( smile )

.

Because you can't use YouTube I went to "bilibili" to see if they had Steve Earle — “Christmas in Washington” but the search only got this;

Untitled1.jpg

.

.

To bad.

Bilibili didn't even have the Joan Baez's cover of the song.

.

If you have any interest perhaps you can get this off site to work for you ;

It's Christmas-e, (barley), protest oriented and pays tribute to the deepest of folk roots.

Some of the lyrics.  Written in 97, though it fells relevant for today as well. (lol)

It's Christmastime in Washington
The Democrats rehearsed
Gettin' into gear for four more years
Things not gettin' worse
Republicans drink whiskey neat
And thanked their lucky stars
They said, "He cannot seek another term
They'll be no more FDRs"
..............
So come back Woody Guthrie
Come back to us now
Tear your eyes from paradise
And rise again somehow
If you run into Jesus
Maybe he can help you out
Come back Woody Guthrie to us now
................
There's foxes in the hen house
Cows out in the corn
The unions have been busted
Their proud red banners torn
To listen to the radio
You'd think that all was well
But you and me and Cisco know
It's going straight to hell
So come back, Emma Goldman
Rise up, old Joe Hill
The barracades are goin' up
They cannot break our will
Come back to us, Malcolm X
And Martin Luther King
We're marching into Selma
As the bells of freedom ring

Thank you, AH, for your response.

If anyone else were interested they would have indicated it in some way, even a thumbs up (thanks to Charger), but on that group I get almost no indication of any interest.

The Guardian just introduced me to a fine, newly released piece of Folk in their music section today, along with some other new works;

Secret sounds: the best songs you didn't hear in 2017

Guardian writers pick their ones that got away this year, from mournful Swedish house music to sun-drenched soul

I don't normally delve too deep into these kind of compilations but I'm glad I stopped and checked a few of these out.

Several nice works on display in the articular but I thought this folksy piece would fit well here.

Rhiannon Giddens – We Could Fly

Based on the ages-old African American folktale The People Could Fly, Rhiannon Giddens’ We Could Fly was the emotional and spiritual centerpiece of the singer’s tour-de-force Freedom Highway, a piercing collection that interrogated the stories the country tells about itself while celebrating 200 years of American civil rights history.

The song, which tells the story of a mother and daughter dreaming of escape and liberation from bondage, features Giddens accompanied by acoustic guitar delivering one of the most tender vocal performances of her career. We Could Fly is a story about the passing down of wisdom, strength, tragedy and hope through oral tradition and music. And like Giddens’ life’s work as an artist who reanimates forgotten historical voices in the present day, the song shows that, often times, the best way to move forward, both individually and collectively, is to learn from generation’s past.
