Balance in Imagery, Positive and Negative Space

WHAT IS NEGATIVE SPACE?

Put simply, negative space is the area which surrounds the main subject in your photo (the main subject is known as the "positive space").

IMO, among the ultimate challenges in any image, is BALANCE …

Balance  is a compositional technique in  photography  that juxtaposes images within a frame so that the objects are of equal visual weight. When different parts of a  photo  command your attention equally, perfect  balance  is achieved.

My objective in this image was to create a simultaneously dramatic, yet balanced image. Although the background is significantly greater in area than the Tree Swallow, I believe the image enables the viewer to "accept" its balance.

But, you tell me.

You know how I feel about a completely blank background.

I’m drawing a blank on that.

Possibly I blanked it out.

Remind me please.

Not if you've erased it from your memory.  My opinion about the cactus flower?  Way too busy a background, distracting.

Image 2) is one I did with Buzz in mind; lots of NEGATIVE SPACES, but, hardly a BLANK background.

Yes, but you OVERDID the background.  It needs either less or drastic softening.
