It's interesting how black and white, and even toned, moderate "color," can evoke entirely different viewer-response from the exact scenes shown in full color.
I have, at times, compared this phenomenon to a "woman who is not wearing makeup." Her natural beauty and character … IMO … are more appealing and "sincere," when color does not distract from her content and persona.
Hi Mac.......I love'em. There is some good fishing going to waste in the first one. Mercy, I would love to be fishing there and if I catch a big one no release.....ok, Mac?
No, no, no. I caught the fish, I cleaned the fish and now, I want to cook it and eat it....ok? I can go out to dinner anytime, but not fish anytime. I would love your company while partaking of this delectable meal.
Great. I am a bass fisherman. Don't know what a green sunfish or a sucker are. I really don't know what a brown trout is. Is that anything like a speckled trout? They are great!
Well, actually, I have never turned a fish away, so, if it is of the right size.....that's our dinner! The bank of the stream looks precarious. Any snakes? How much walking in the woods to get there? Is it slushy or dry? Do I wear boots?
Much of the stream can be seen from a trail, but getting to the water's edge is down some pretty steep slopes; no poisonous snakes or bears … a coyote is a rare sighting but every now and then, one turns up.
As for dinner … there might be some jealousy from home, but, if there's ever a meet of NT members and we're both in attendance, I'd be happy to join you for dinner, Maggie.
No problem. I doubt seriously there would ever be an occasion of our meeting. For sure, not with a NT group! I just want to fish. But. this experience will just be a dream.
It's a nice thought, Maggie … especially, in that two individuals with disparate political views, can still have a mutual respect and good feelings about each other.
Yes, I have added it to my other good thoughts. I have had a lovely life and I replay my good memories over and over....it is sort of like re runs of my favorite movies.
Technically speaking, the number of shades between pure white and solid black, is 256.
But, if I start with full color, and, rather than convert to fully desaturated black and white, I desaturate by, say, 90%, although a given image may appear to be black and white, it often "feels" otherwise … mysterious, eerie, romantic … somehow compellingly "other" than what the 256 shades can yield.
And, I hasten to add, it doesn't always "work." The more I look at the bottom image, the less I like it … I might delete it.
I didn't want to say so until you said it, but I see no colour whatsoever in the second photo - but that could be internet technical and my computer to some extent. IMO the first photo perfectly indicates the point of your article.
Beautiful, Mac. I don't find them eerie, although I can see where one would. It's how the woods look when the moon is full, and I can actually see the things that usually happen under the cover of darkness.
Last evening, I was driving home by the river, and the trees (with no leaves yet, thanks to this cold spring) were lit up in autumn colors. I've never seen anything like it in my life. By the time I pulled over, the light had changed and I couldn't capture it .. but it will stay with me.
Not quite black and white … an eerie look.
Nice effect - a little spooky.

My two cents.
Good analysis.

How 'bout we put the fish back and we go out for dinner?

Flattery will get you everywhere.
You haven't told me......are you gonna let me catch my fish, clean it and cook it or what?
Well, maybe just this once.
There are Rainbow and Brown Trout in that stream, some smallmouth and largemouth bass, Green Sunfish, Suckers and Carp.
Take your pick.

Of course, you didn't say you would join me for dinner.

Amazing images, A. Mac !!
Were these taken at sunrise or sunset ?
Were these taken at sunrise or sunset ?
Both were take in late afternoon … a year or two and 90+ miles apart.
Really wild photos. Love this effect. Great job!
I really like the way there is a little more color than black and white in those photos. Thanks.

There is so little color in the second photo that it's quite likely that differently-calibrated computer monitors will render them "absent" of color.
I am going to take down the second image shortly as I do not like it! I will replace it with something else.

I'm pretty sure that there are some Weendigo's in there...
Nice photos Mac.
Just couldn't live with the original image 2) … so … I replaced it with a new image 2).
Haunting still, but possibly a bit more "inviting."
Better.
