Rutgers is training students how to assist illegal immigrants
A new training resource at Rutgers University is designed to educate students in ways they can assist the undocumented community.
According to The Daily Targum , “DREAM Zone” is a cross-disciplinary program designed to educate students, faculty, and staff about the various issues illegal immigrant students may face. While the program was first developed at New York University, it has been enthusiastically embraced by Rutgers and was offered on the campus for the first time in April.
During the course training session, presenters touched on topics such as pending legislation related to students enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, the history of immigration to the U.S. since its founding, and even methods to “check” what people are saying about the undocumented community on various social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook.
While the program is not mandatory, a number of Rutgers administrators have expressed their approval for the program. One administrator has gone as far as to say that the program should be mandatory for students.
“I think trainings like these are important to start conversations about how to begin supporting undocumented students in institutions, especially for people who are going into higher education,” said Yuriana Garcia Tellez, who also serves as the senior program coordinator of undocumented student services at Rutgers University. “The training should be mandatory.”
Illegal immigrants make up a significant portion of the student population at Rutgers, as recent reports by the school have estimated the number of undocumented students enrolled to be in excess of 500.
