Boeing steps in to help the manufacturer of the world's biggest plane

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

Boeing stepped in to rescue the Ukrainian plane maker Antonov, known for producing the world's largest aircraft.

The firm had ceased production because of its heavy reliance on Russian imports, which had collapsed after Moscow's annexation of Crimea in 2014.

But, Boeing's parts, equipment and services unit, Aviall, is set to now provide the components and Antonov plans to build eight aircraft a year from the end of next year. The deal, which was signed at the Farnborough International Airshow, was confirmed to CNBC via email on Friday.

President of Antonov, Oleksandr Donets, told Reuters in an interview that the next step is to build a storage facility with Aviall.

"This warehouse will deal with products, materials, metals, non-metals — with all components we are not able to get from our former partner, the Russian Federation," he said.

Donets added that the warehouse would be funded by the Boeing subsidiary.

Antonov builds a range of passenger, cargo and transport aircraft. The latest under development is the An-132, a twin-engined turboprop used for military transportation which is being jointly developed with Saudi Arabia.

Strange indeed, but actually pretty cool since it will help Ukraine which can use all the help they can get after the Russian invasion.

The Ukraine can use all the help it can get, as it is a money pit, and was a money pit before the 'invasion'... in my opinion..

Thanks for the link ...

At the beginning of the uprising in the Ukraine .. I began doing research .. at that time China was going after the Ukraine for the 3 Billion cash for grain loan .. the Ukraine took the money, but did not deliver - decided to sell said grain to someone else instead...

Before the (not the) Coup .. the Ukraine had a 15 Billion dollar loan agreement with Russia .. 5 Billion of which was paid out to the Ukraine - after the Coup the US and Europe swoop in and wine and dine the 'interim' Prime Minister of the Ukraine (the US gave the Ukraine a Billion dollars) - Putin annexes Crimea to protect Black Sea ports that at that time were merely on 'lease' to Russia..

Wonder why the Ukraine is not a member of the EU yet?

Yes, there is a lot of corruption in Ukraine. The government in particular. There are literally wrestling matches and fist fights on the Rada floor trying to get bills past and remove the corruption.

There are some economic standards which must be  met prior to Ukraine's admittance into the EU. That won't happen until the corruption comes under control.

BTW, it is just Ukraine not the Ukraine these days.

Y/W. That happened when they gained independence from the Soviet Union in '91.

About Russia I don't remember The Russia, but there was The Rus and where they lived became Rus Land or Russia Land. There were some names like Kievan Rus and some other combinations with Kiev in the name.

I have read some interesting things about the Rus and Vikings. There are some stories about when the Vikings began exploring into Russia, the two groups hit it off like old drinking partners. The Rus would help the Viking get their long boats through some of the shallow areas where the boats couldn't navigate without extra help. The longboats were famous for shallow draught but some places were too shallow.

They would work together, party together, hold ceremonies and set up trading crossroads. If I am not mistaken, St. Petersburg is a result of one of those crossroads.

Any time you have a government without any way to regulate business you will have rampant corruption.

I went more than 1,000 years back in time trying to think of The Russia.

I have a good first hand family account of the Russian Revolution. Being a descendant of a lone survivor who came home from school one day to find all the members of his extended family with whom he was living while attending prep school, brutally murdered and he was next

Sounds like a novel, but it was real life and death.

I assume most are aware of the Soviet Union prior to the/The Russian Federation so I shook a few cob webs around and reached back in time.

My thoughts are the terms The Russian Federation and Russia are somewhat synonymous phrasing as The United States of America and America.

I agree about corruption being everywhere in all governments, it's here. But there are varying degrees of corruption. Ukraine, though populated by many very nice people, is plagued with a degree of corruption which is deeply entrenched resulting in practices which have compromised their acceptance into the EU.

Trying to root out that corruption has resulted in many physical confrontations at many levels. The bad guys have a well entrenched network and do all they can to protect it and cover each others backs to keep their gravy trains rolling.

I hope the good guys succeed.

I like a historical point of view.

It seems to me that when we step back a bit, the USSR is just a blip in the long history of Mother Russia. The country was a plutocratic oligarchy before the Revolution, and is once again a plutocratic oligarchy today.

Can't help but think that is core to the corruption found in and causing struggles in  Ukraine today.

So the sanctions against Russia have impacted the Ukraine economy as well?

Side note:  I am not a proponent of sanctions, as it is the people that suffer .. if the US actually sanctioned President Putin, I would be all for it...

Did you see the Putin special on CNN last night ( not sure if it was a rerun )

Putin claims to only own a 900 square foot "apartment" on a half acre with a garage large enough to store his 2 "classic" Russian automobiles, a tiny popup trailer and his large motorcycle. (per his election financial documents )

The 10 presidential palaces, yachts, planes and other toys all belong to "the people".

he's just a misunderstood, down to earth guy........./s

Found sounds bites of various interviews with Putin .. there was nothing current after Megyn Kelly that I could find …. but I did watch multiple video clips of Putin, a couple were of him and his dogs .. not sure what that was suppose to be.

He is a rather scary guy with influence .. think I may be able to understand a bit better as to why individuals flip'd out over Trump being alone in conversation with him (Trump is not a keen individual) …. I always felt that Putin was a step ahead of Obama in dancing lessons as well - I do not think Putin can be out narcissist'd!  (yes, I made up a word)

I don't know if that conclusion can be drawn relative to this statement:

The firm had ceased production because of its heavy reliance on Russian imports, which had collapsed after Moscow's annexation of Crimea in 2014

At the time of the annexation some things stopped dead cold prior to sanctions.

and the west half ( or third) of the country is still in the hands of the Russian backed "rebels" .

Russia essentially ceased trading with Ukraine as punishment for the election fiascos.

Slight correction, it's primarily the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, primarily Donetsk and Luhansk.

They nearly moved into Kherson'ka Oblast at one point.

Arguably a larger cargo bay, but much smaller than several Antonov one offs.

Antonov creations hold the record for payloads and tonnage airlifted.
