OBAMA GETS NEW PEACE PRIZE DESPITE HUNDREDS OF CIVILIAN CASUALTIES IN DRONE STRIKES

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

Former President Barack Obama has received another peace prize.

The former president was named a Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Ripple of Hope laureate Monday. The award honors   those   who “work toward a more just and peaceful world.” The RFK nonprofit tweeted that it is “honored to present Barack Obama” with the award.

Obama will officially be presented with the award by Ethel Kennedy in December at the organization’s annual gala. Obama infamously was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize just months into his presidency. Obama faced criticism for multiple human rights abuses during his tenure as commander in chief. Obama was criticized harshly for pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq and creating a vacuum that was filled by ISIS. He has also been harshly condemned for his embrace of drone warfare.   According   to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, Obama killed nearly 1,000 civilians in more than 500 drone strikes during his presidency.

“There were ten times more air strikes in the covert war on terror during President Barack Obama’s presidency than under his predecessor, George W. Bush,” the Bureau report states. “Obama  embraced the US drone programme , overseeing more strikes in his first year than Bush carried out during his entire presidency. A total of 563 strikes, largely by drones, targeted Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen during Obama’s two terms, compared to 57 strikes under Bush. Between 384 and 807 civilians were killed in those countries, according to reports logged by the Bureau.”

Obama responded that Kennedy was one of his heroes. “Bobby Kennedy was one of my heroes,” Obama said, “He was someone who showed us the power of acting on our ideals, the idea that any of us can be one of the “million different centers of energy and daring” that ultimately combine to change the world for the better.”

Well, he sure is lucky that the criteria for the Ripple of Hope Award doesn't require actually doing anything peaceful.  Another 'feel good' award.

I wonder how much input Ethel Kennedy really had in deciding recent awards. She's 90 years old.

Another 'feel good' award.

It's still difficult for me to understand why Obama, just months into his presidency, got the same award that Elie Wiesel, Lech Walesa, Mother Teresa, MLK Jr, and many others truly earned.

Ah yes, we remember when we had a President, Obama, who cared about social justice...

Other than flowery speeches and photo ops, what, specifically, did Obama do to show that he cared about social justice? What did he do about crime and injustice in Detroit, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, etc? What did he do about MS-13? What did he do about illegal aliens raping and murdering US citizens and LEGAL immigrants?

what, specifically, did Obama do to show that he cared about social justice?

Other than degrading women, mocking the disabled, and shoving other dignitaries aside to be in front, specifically, what has Trump done to show that he cares about social justice?

Obama used the powers of his Presidency to make America a more just place for everyone...

On the other hand, Trump is just using the Presidency to advance his own, not our, interests.

& now this:

Barack Obama served as the 44th President of the United States. Following his roles as a community organizer, constitutional law professor, and U.S. Senator, Obama was elected President in 2008, taking office at a moment of crisis unlike any America had seen in decades. His leadership helped rescue the economy, revitalize the American auto industry, reform the healthcare system to cover another twenty million Americans, and put the country on a firm course to a clean energy future – all while overseeing the longest stretch of job creation in American history. On the world stage, Obama’s belief in America’s indispensable leadership helped wind down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, decimate al Qaeda and eliminate the world’s most wanted terrorists, shut down Iran’s nuclear weapons program, open up a new chapter with the people of Cuba, and unite humanity in coordinated action to combat a changing climate. In his post-presidency, President Obama remains committed to lifting up the next generation of leaders through his work with the Obama Foundation.

BULLETIN:

This award is for the work going forward. As a former world leader, Barack Obama through the Obama Foundation will continue to work in furtherance of human rights for all. Thus, supporters and critics of Barack Obama can send funds to help carry forward human rights goals in fellowship with this foundation and RFK Partners for Human Rights.

Good try, calbab, but no award for your attempt to "justify" that Obama somehow earned this peace prize when his drone program killed many innocent civilians.

Oh yes... Obama kills a few slugs that hung around with terrorists and the right wing came out of their skins but bush kills 500,000 innocent civilians just a couple of years earlier, in the same region and the right? Not a peep. Save the fake outrage...
