Senate Committee Refers Perjury Cases to Mueller For Prosecution
The Senate Intelligence Committee has referred perjury cases to Special Counsel Robert Mueller, Chairman Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.)

The Senate Intelligence Committee has referred perjury cases to Special Counsel Robert Mueller,  Chairman Sen.  Richard Burr  (R-N.C.) said Friday. Mueller is investigating Russian interference in the 2016 election and Burr’s committee has done its own investigation into the same matter. Burr disclosed that after witnesses were questioned in the Intelligence Committee’s  Russia probe several were suspected of lying.

“We have made referrals from our committee to the special counsel for prosecution,” Burr said at a national security conference in Austin, Texas. “In a lot of those cases, those might be tied to lying to us.”

Even some republicans know when it's time to dump the T rump

I can't decide how I feel about the idea of the Senate referring anything to the special counsel for prosecution. He doesn't work for them.

If we identify a crime in our investigation that has been committed, we refer it to the special prosecutor,” Burr said. “I won’t tell you the number of times, but we have made referrals to the special prosecutor.”

The special counsel has been given a very specific mandate by the Deputy Attorney General in place of the AG who recused himself. The special counsel exists because of possible conflicts of interest in the investigation, but I'm not sure I see that on a simple perjury charge that's not connected to his investigation.

It seems to me if the Senate wants perjury investigated, they could refer the matter to the Attorney General, who can investigate it or not at his discretion. Granted, that with the information he already has, the special counsel might be better equipped to determine whether or not someone lied to Congress on this topic, but it's not really part of his investigation into Russian interference.

It just strikes me as odd.

One thought I had is that several members of Congress have been very nervous about protecting the special counsel from the White House. Perhaps this is an attempt to exercise some level of control over the situation. If they have asked the special counsel to prosecute something and the president fires him (something I'm not really worried about, yet) then they might claim the president is interfering with Senate business and seek relief in the courts on Separation of Powers grounds.

Maybe they don't trust the new acting AG.

That has certainly been made clear, in any case.

Well, it looks like Donald Trump, Jr. lied his dumb fat ass off to the US Senate Intelligence Committee about matters related to national security and foreign espionage and that is a serious crime, indeed...

and that is a serious crime

No one said perjury wasn't a serious crime. That's not grounds for referring it to the special prosecutor.

I know, right? I mean, isn't the proper course of action to refer it to the Justice Department? Seems more like political maneuvering than anything else.

I'm sure trump will find a way to pacify them soon enough. So I wouldn't get my hopes up too much.

underestimating trump is one of the things he seems to count on. Unpredictable trump.

My mistake I missed the Junior.

Still I doubt he would do any jail time. Even jr is protected by the trump umbrella to a large part.

I dont know big business much but if all this was a huge business and instead of an election this person trump was just hired to run the huge company, would he still be doing so ?

I guess being a private or a public company may make a difference.

But it sure seems like this guy has a lot of baggage.

One of the 'indicted' Russians has been found dead.  I think he was with the FSB.

As far as lying under oath.  Been a lot of that going on lately.  Most of it behind closed doors without public access.  I certainly hope that changes.  The least these jokers can do is lie with the cameras rolling and everybody listening to every word.

Mueller can not indict.  Only the courts and the DOJ can do that.
