Members of a radical Muslim group have been identified as suspects in a series of  Easter suicide bombings  on churches and luxury hotels across Sri Lanka.

Coordinated explosions erupted near simultaneously Sunday morning across the island nation off the southern tip of India, killing nearly 300 people, including at least four Americans, and injuring at least 500. The attacks left  government security officials scrambling to explain why warnings of an imminent terrorist attack went unheeded.

The bombings are now being blamed on the local group National Thowfeek Jamaath, or NTJ. Police said 24 suspects have been arrested so far in connection with the bombings, and Sri Lankan Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said all suspects are Sri Lankan nationals.

The explosions unfolded Sunday when at least seven suicide bombers detonated devices inside three Christian churches packed with people celebrating Easter services as well as three hotels popular among Western tourists, officials said. There were eight simultaneous explosions around 8:45 a.m. local time.

Video from inside St. Sebastian's Church in Negombo, a coastal city about 40 miles north of Colombo, showed the immediate aftermath as worshipers were surrounded by devastation, death and chaos.

My friend's son just got there on Saturday - he was joining his girlfriend who is there for a residency (doctor).  Luckily they got a message to my friend that they're OK before she saw the news.

What a horrible tragedy.

Wow-- must've been scary for them when they heard the news. Good to know they're OK!

They weren't in the areas where the attacks occurred, thank goodness.  I can't imagine being right there and seeing the destruction ... even the people who didn't get hurt are going to be mentally scarred.

St. Anthony's Shrine, a Catholic church in Colombo, and Zion Church in Batticaloa were also attacked. Colombo is on the western side of Sri Lanka, while Batticaloa is on the eastern shore, about 200 miles from the capital.

Shangri-La Hotel, Cinnamon Grand Hotel and Kingsbury Hotel, all located in Colombo -- and all popular with tourists -- were also targeted. An explosion also occurred near an overpass in the area of Dematagoda near Colombo, the Associated Press reported.

Hours after the initial bombings, a ninth occurred at a guest house in Colombo, killing at least two people, according to police.

I just read another article and believe the ninth one you mention went off during police attempts to disarm it.  The worst story so far is about a Danish father who lost 3 of his children.  Such senseless slaughter for a idiotic reason.

There have been many terror attacks inother parts of Asia that often don't become headline news here, so many Americans think they only happen in the Arab world.

Here are two past attacks in that part of the world:

On Easter Sunday in 2016, a suicide bomber killed more than 70 people in a busy park in Lahore, Pakistan. A splinter group of the Taliban claimed responsibility, saying it had specifically targeted Christians.

Last May, suicide bombers struck three churches in Surabaya, Indonesia, killing 28 people, and in January, two bombs ripped through a cathedral in the Philippines, leaving 20 dead. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for both attacks.

Anybody who DARES to publish what is actually happening in Europe and other places in the world can be arrested and jailed or fined there, if not have their heads cut off for "blasphemy".  They will be named Islamophobes and SPLC will put them on their hate list and MBFC will declare them to be "questionable" sources, so the mainstream media ignores it, which is why most American people don't have a clue what is really happening in the world.

I think I'm pretty accurate.  You might note that I don't criticize other members of NT with that rant - I think that's kind of unusual around here.

About Sri Lanka:

Sri Lanka is an island country in South Asia, located in the Indian Ocean to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal and to the southeast of the Arabian Sea.

Sri Lanka's documented history spans 3,000 years, with evidence of pre-historic human settlements dating back to at least 125,000 years.

It has a rich cultural heritage and the first known Buddhist writings of Sri Lanka, the Pāli Canon, date back to the Fourth Buddhist council in 29 BC.Its geographic location and deep harbours made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to the modern Maritime Silk Road.

Sri Lanka was known from the beginning of British colonial rule as  Ceylon.

Religion

Sri Lanka is a multi-religious country.

Buddhists   comprise 70 percent of the population.A sapling of the   Bodhi Tree   under which   the Buddha   attained enlightenment was brought to Sri Lanka.  Sri Lanka has the longest continuous history of Buddhism of any predominantly Buddhist nation.

Hinduism  is the second most prevalent religion in Sri Lanka and predates Buddhism.

Islam   is the third most prevalent religion in the country, having first been brought to the island by Arab traders over the course of many centuries.

Around 7.4% of the Sri Lankan population are Christians, of which 82% are   Roman Catholics   who trace their religious heritage directly to the Portuguese. The remaining Christians are evenly split between the   Anglican Church of Ceylon   and other   Protestant denominations. [307]

In a 2008  Gallup poll , Sri Lanka was ranked the third most religious country in the world, with 99% of Sri Lankans saying religion was an important part of their daily life. [

When I was still practicing, we had a priest from Sri Lanka.  At one the Rosary Society dinners I attended he showed pictures from his country.  They were beautiful.

I have family there as well.....they are ok, thank God.... After all, they were just "Easter Worshipers"......according to some....no....my family that was there were Christians, NOT "Easter Worshipers".......If something happens on a holy day of Muslims, I would never ever say, they are just fasting worshipers, or Rammadan worshipers....WTF is wrong with people? I scheduled a pt 2 months ago out of respect....he didn't want his appt to fall during Passover. Respect.....I have Muslim pts as well, and I schedule them according to their religious needs. I would NEVER tell a pt or say to one, "sorry, its just Passover worship", or anything the sort to a Muslim pt
