The only  black   Republican  in the  House of Representatives  – who recently criticised  Donald Trump’s  tweets as  “racist and xenophobic”  – has announced he is quitting politics.

In what will be seen as a major blow to the credibility of the Republican Party amid a storm of outrage over racists remarks and tweets by the president, 41-year Will Hurd announced he will not seek re-election in 2020.

In a statement posted  on his official congressional website, Mr Hurd did not mention Mr Trump or racism. However, he underscored what he considered the strength of the country, saying that “America is better than the sum of its parts”.

“Serving people of all walks of life has shown me that way more unites our country than divides us,” he added.

Mr Hurd, who represents Texas’s 23rd congressional district which runs along a large section of the Mexico border, had in recent weeks been put in a difficult situation by racist tweets and comments made by the president about four Democratic congresswomen – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib. Mr Trump told them to “go back home”, even though three were born in the US and the fourth came as a refugee two decades ago.

Speaking on CNN last month, Mr Hurd said the comments were racist and xenophobic. Saying Mr Trump’s behaviour was not becoming of the leader of the free world, he said the president should be “talking about things that unite us, not divide us”.

“As the only African American Republican in the House of Representatives and as a congressman who represents a 71 per cent Latino district, I’ve taken a conservative message to places that don’t often hear it.”

“I think those tweets are racist and xenophobic. They’re also inaccurate,” he said.

Hurd has always been a closet liberal who should never have called himself a Republican.

Over 90% of black Americans vote Democrat, are you saying Republicans can't even find one black Republican to support as a Senator? That the one token they did find was never really a Republican in the first place?

What kind of personal hell induces people to support Trump or his sycophants?

Hurd isn't the only Texas Republican that is retiring.  All of this appears to be more about using Congress as a revolving door for private sector enrichment than it is about Trump.

Correct, several other Republicans recognize the Republican party is no longer the party of fiscal conservatism, it's now solidly in the hands of fiscally irresponsible ignorant bigots which is why any Republican legislator with a functioning backbone is choosing to walk away.

And none of those Republicans are switching parties.  Trump has not made the Democratic Party more appealing to Republicans.  And Democrats certainly haven't done anything to make the Democratic Party more appealing to fiscal conservatives.

What should be of more concern are politicians using government to enrich themselves in the private sector.  That's what Hurd's retirement suggests.

Hurd said in a statement that he left a job in the CIA to run for Congress in 2014 to help give the lower chamber leadership in areas related to intelligence and national security. 

"While Congress has a role in these issues, so does the private sector and civil society," he said. "After reflecting on how best to help our country address these challenges, I’m leaving the House of Representatives to help our country in a different way."

Hurd has said that he will vote for Trump again if he is the Republican nominee in 2020.

I just watched Hurd in an interview with Fox News about his retirement. He is still a 'loyal' republican and Trumpian. Apparently, he has his government "twenty" end (by the time his term is up) and he wants to get out in the field and lead the 'republican charge' up a metaphorical hill somewhere. Sounded like he wants to task himself to persuade people of color to come on over to the Trump's imaginary land where you can cheat other people but good and without a conscience.
