Utah teacher tells boy, excited to be adopted by 2 dads, it's 'nothing to be thankful for'

The unidentified teacher, who was working at Deerfield Elementary School in Cedar Hills in late November, asked a class of fifth-graders what they were thankful for this year ahead of Thanksgiving . One boy, an 11-year-old identified as "D.M.," said he was thankful he was "finally going to be adopted by my two dads."
"Why on earth would you be happy about that?" the teacher quipped, according to The Salt Lake Tribune . She then reportedly lectured the 30-student class for 10 minutes about how "homosexuality is wrong" and "two men living together is a sin."
Three female students asked the teacher to stop multiple times, and when she didn't, they walked to the principal's office to report her. She was ultimately escorted from the building and, as this unfolded, she continued to argue her point.
“She also tried to blame our son and told him that it was his fault that she went off," one of the boy's fathers , Louis van Amstel, who used to work as a dancer and choreographer for ABC's "Dancing with the Stars," told the Tribune. “It’s absolutely ridiculous and horrible what she did. We were livid. It’s 2019 and this is a public school.”
Amstel said school administrators immediately contacted them to tell them what happened. Amstel said their son was hesitant to talk, because he didn't want to get the teacher in trouble, but school officials put the story together after speaking to students.
The father commended the principal's actions to KSTU , telling the news station "she's wonderful, she's been really amazing." He said the principal, Caroline Knadler, escorted the substitute out of the building, telling her: "There's the door, keep walking."
Van Amstel said the incident made their son — who has been in foster care for years and experienced two failed adoptions — "so fearful that this could make us think that we don’t want to adopt him."
Kelly Services, the company that coordinates substitute teachers with the Alpine School District , said in a statement: "We are concerned about any reports of inappropriate behavior and take these matters very seriously. We conduct business based on the highest standards of integrity, quality and professional excellence. We’re looking into this situation and we have no further comment at this time."
The child is scheduled to be formally adopted on Dec. 19.

I just wanted to cry for the boy. He had a hard life and things were looking great and he was happy.
What could have been a great experience for the boy, with a good teacher that would have been willing to experience the joy with him and the rest of the class turned into a hateful tirade.
The woman has no business ever being in a classroom again.
I know I wouldn't want her around any of my grand nephews and nieces. I mean even though she doesn't approve of the situation she should never have made that boy feel so bad. Awful person.

Is she entitled to her own personal views?
Yes, of course.
The First Amendment, in all its facets applies to her no less than to anyone else.
The operative word here is "personal".
Her views were not relevant in a public setting, like a school.
The First Amendment is not without its limits, for good reason.
The First Amendment is not the only amendment, or the laws which it amends.
First we take care of the children in school.
The personal beliefs come later, in general, not for one student in personal settings.

On the bright side the teacher (substitute) was fired and won't be spewing this sort of crap in the classroom again in the future.
I feel as bad for this kid as I do for kids with single parents. They will never know the balance of growing up in a happy home with a mother and father. For a lot of children, seeing their parents interact is the first time they witness how the opposite sex treats each other. This child will likely be at a disadvantage at life and will probably struggle to interact with women.

Neither do I. I wouldn't want those views for anything else too. As it is, there are no valid, peer reviewed scientific studies which conclusively show children of same sex parents do any better or worse than those raised by hetero parents. Gender or sexual orientation alone does not a successful parent make.

There are lots of studies showing children from fatherless homes have many issues and many mass shooters come from farherless homes. I struggle to find any studies of negative affects of motherless homes. Seems maybe they are only needed for the birthing? For now....
That's from a single parent household. THe child in the article has a 2-parent household now.
