How do you get the closeups? Telephoto lenses or very high resolution with software magnification? Magnificent photos...

I use a 300mm lens, but, I also set up a bird feeder close to my family room window maybe 5 to 7 feet from my camera (which is on a tripod). My family room faces my back yard which is on the edge of a forested area.

I may have a photo of the setup; if I can find it I'll post it if not, I'll take a picture with my iPhone and post that.

I use a Nikon D7100 which, when I shoot in RAW File Format (large setting) gives me an image of roughly 12" x 20".

Here is my setup for bird photos.

2517_discussions.jpg

Taken with mi iPhone.

Nikon D7100, Nikon 18-300mm Lens -- on a tripod

Note that I have wedged tree branches under a bird feeder tray; that enables me to take close up, sometimes full frame bird photos WITHOUT SHOWING ANY PORTION OF THE FEEDER.

I use the flash even in daylight I set it manually to fill in shadows, but so as to not overexpose the shot.

To the right and off camera (beyond the neighbor's fence) is a forested area with a population of wild, white-tailed deer and a small stream.

Be happy to answer ant questions.
