White House testing czar: 'I can't recommend' hydroxychloroquine

White House coronavirus testing czar Adm. Brett Giroir said Sunday that he "can't recommend" hydroxychloroquine to treat COVID-19 in an apparent contradiction of President Trump's support of the drug.

Giroir, a Health and Human Services (HHS) assistant secretary, told NBC's "Meet the Press" that hydroxychloroquine "looked very promising" at first, but five studies have now found that the anti-malarial drug does not help COVID-19 patients.

"At this point in time, there's been five randomized-controlled, placebo-controlled trials that do not show any benefit to hydroxychloroquine, so at this point in time, we don't recommend that as a treatment," he said.

"Right now, hydroxychloroquine, I can't recommend that," he added.

The testing czar also highlighted that steroids have shown a reduction in mortality by 30 percent and said research on immune plasma and vaccines is "promising."

Giroir emphasized that hydroxychloroquine "needs to be prescribed by a physician" but said he doubted that most physicians would prescribe it.

"There may be circumstances - I don't know what they are - where a physician may prescribe it for an individual, but I think most physicians and prescribers are evidence-based, and they're not influenced by whatever is on Twitter or anything else," he added.

The HHS assistant secretary also called on the country to "move on from" hydroxychloroquine "and talk about what is effective" in stopping the spread of the coronavirus, such as wearing a mask, avoiding crowds, avoiding indoor gatherings and washing your hands.

Trump last week shared a video of physicians advocating for the use of hydroxychloroquine, calling it a cure for COVID-19. The president repeatedly defended his sharing of the video and has stood by his support of the drug after he took it himself earlier in the pandemic.

It's never too early to start packing one's office in this administration.

It would probably be the best thing for him, staying in this administration is sure way to destroy any credibility you have.

I'm waiting for Trump to throw a twitter fit.

What I don't understand about all of this is why people don't care that Trump owns stock in the company that produces Hydroxychloroquine.  He authorized the purchase of millions of doses from Gilead Sciences so the US would have a stockpile.  Stockpile my ass.  Now we are stuck with this crappola and Trump is making a mint.  It's nauseating to think there are people who think this is ok.

And packing up some of his campaign funds to tide him over just in case he loses the election as he has already done.

Trump Has Now Shifted $1.9 Million From Campaign Donors To His Business;

Nothing like stealing from your own loyal supporters and throwing them under the bus, including those whose who may now lose everything they have worked so hard for all these years due to his inept and arrogant refusal to take the CV seriously, and follow the guidance of those who are far more intelligent than he is about such matters.

And who are the ones handling his properties who will benefit most from that money? You got it!

Hey Trump, how about you actually getting CV.  Then take your miracle drug and let us know how that goes.  One stipulation though.  You can't use your toadie doctor to follow your case.

Actually at one point he was taking it. Or so he says/ (he lies so much that I've come to assume that anything he says is a lirs-- until proven otherwise!)/

Although IIRC shortly after he claimed he was talking it he stopped...

While it does have several negative side effects, I don't think it can be blamed for his mental instability-- afterall, that started long before he took the drug.

He is one walking/talking pile of bs.  I was watching CNN when he blurted out his, "I'm taking it right now,"  nonsense.  I experienced an involuntary eye-roll so strong, it produced a gust of wind that blew papers off an end table.  In my neighbor's house.

Ran out of space in the con, did he? Got a conscience before the time ticked out. Interesting. Let's see where Dr. Girar follows the success 'fork' in his road going forward. Watch this space! Gumption found!

Trump's only acknowledgement of Adm. Giroir has been, "What was your name again?"  Regardless of the reason, props to the Admiral for speaking up.

I think that as time ticks down, more and more members of this administration will want to save whatever future they may have left.  Then it's each man/woman for him/herself.  For some, like Pompeo and Barr and McConnell, it's too late.  Oh, and Matt Gaetz and Jim Jordan, too.  I would love to be a fly on the wall when those two fools figure out they've been by Trump.
