Windows 10 phones and tiny tablets won't get the desktop
Prognostications about Microsoft killing the desktop in Windows 10 are coming truebut only for the smallest of tablets.
New tablets with screens smaller than 8 inches will not ship with a classic desktop, and wont be able to run legacy Win32 (read: desktop) applications according to Joe Belfiore , corporate vice president of Microsofts Operating Systems Group. These devices will instead run something very similar to the phone version of Windows 10 that Microsoft showed off last week.
If you already have a 7-inch Windows tablet like Toshibas Encore Mini , dont panic; Belfiore clarified on Twitter that existing tablets will retain their desktop functionality . Theyll also support the new Continuum feature that switches to a mouse-and-keyboard interface when you dock the tablet with a desktop monitor.
With Windows 10, Microsoft is designing a single operating system to run across phones, phablets, small and large tablets, laptops, desktops and the Xbox One console. But smaller devices will still have their roots in Windows Phone, and what weve seen so far is not a major departure from the existing interface.
The story behind the story: The death of the Windows desktop has been a popular prediction among tech pundits for years. But after facing a backlash for the drastic redesign of Windows 8, Microsoft backed away from plans to make the desktop a less integral part of the operating system. Instead, its drawing a firm linein this case, at 8 incheson which devices should have full Windows functionality, and which should behave more like smartphones.

The interesting tidbit here is nearly the contrary to the title.
In other words... a phone with a dock will be a full-blown Windows computer.
My phone (a gargantuan Xperia Z Ultra) can run all the peripherals: mouse, keyboard, screen, hard drive, ... but Android was never intended to be a desktop Operating System. It's a lousy experience.
I wonder if my next phone will run Windows 10??
I recently read about spyware installed with certain new Chinese made smartphones . The only way to get rid of it was to do a clean install of the Android op-sys .
The cool thing about tech toys is that there's an infinite variety. If you want simple, or sophisticated, you're covered.
I remember when I had a phone, a pocket camera, an ereader, and an mp3 player. Now I have a phone. I used to have a laptop and a desktop. Now just a laptop, that I dock for a big screen, mouse and keyboard. But that does mean that I still have a laptop and a phone. Maybe my next phone will replace my laptop.
Then there's my good camera...
I bought a Samsung Note 8 that really is cool, but as Bob pointed out, android has it's limitations... sadly I found this out 2 years ago, when I thought that was all I needed to do what I needed to do for the site while I was in England. Programing is nearly impossible, and simple daily tasks that I do here totally impossible. But it is great for doing day to day stuff.
Then I bought Windows 8 laptop. In how many ways can I say sucked about that program. I thought it might have been the computers... but after trying 4 different ones... I gave up.
I ended up with Macbook Air. Love would be the word! And since I have Iphone life is now perfect in my computer world.
I hope that windows 10 is better than 8. I loved XP hated Vista, loved 7 hated 8.
I love Vista . Your server-phobia needs to be constrained ...
If you come across this again, Petey, I'd be interested in a link.
... along with about five billion other folks.
Which is why Microsoft had best not screw up again! Screwing up every other time is not good... but twice in a row might be serious trouble.

and a quick excerpt :
"Many models of Coolpad phones, which is big in China and Southeast Asia and is sold to North American customers in online stores, may contain a backdoor known as "Coolreaper," which can let attackers hijack the device from top to bottom"
Yowza! That's pretty unsettling!
I've never considered buying a Chinese phone of unknown marque... but I have bought accessories. This info will keep me... careful.
Thanks.
Being careful is becoming increasingly important . These days even just charging a device from your USB port can be dangerous ...
