Ron Reagan , the son of President Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan , delivered a blistering condemnation of President Donald Trump , slamming the Trump family as "grifters in the White House," personally benefiting from jobs for which they lacked qualifications, and saying that his father would have been "horrified" by the Trump presidency.

Reagan made the comments on CNN Newsroom Sunday afternoon to host Ana Cabrera . Cabrera began the segment mentioning CNN's new First Ladies series, and asked about Nancy Reagan's support of her husband's presidency.

"She was involved in, you know, what he was doing as president," said Cabrera. "I just wondered, did that involvement in White House matters extend to the family, to you and your siblings, the way it does with this current White House?"

"Uh, no," Reagan replied with a laugh, "not the way it does in this current White House, no. It would be terribly inappropriate, I'm sure my father would've thought so, to practice the kind of nepotism that we see now. I mean, he would not be of a mind to appoint an unqualified person, whether that person was his child or not, to a position high in the White House. And, you know, given no experience there, why would you do that? Why would I even accept something like that?"

Reagan drew a distinction between a politician's family members supporting their campaign, which he and his siblings did for President Reagan — "there's nothing wrong with that" — and what he saw the Trump family doing.

"When you cross the line is, you know, I hate to say it here and I don't mean to be blunt, but we've got a bunch of grifters there in the White House," said Reagan. "They're treating this as a grift."

"They're mixing business with pleasure," he continued. "They're mixing business with state craft. They're using the hotels and the golf clubs to profit off of the presidency. Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump have no qualifications whatsoever to be in the position they're in, zero, zip, and they're using it to make money, basically."

Later in the segment, Reagan, an outspoken liberal, nonetheless spoke fondly of his father's legacy and said that Trump had "done a tremendous amount of damage" to the Republican Party.

"When I think of my father, I think of words like integrity, decency, dignity, honor, and patriotism — not nationalism but patriotism — all of those qualities are in very short supply in this White House. And, frankly, the Republican party has been complicit in degrading those values."

"Do you think your father would recognize the Republican party right now?" asked Cabrera.

"He would be horrified by the Republican party right now, " Reagan replied, "the spinelessness in the face of this pathological entity in the White House right now would shock him."

Ronald Reagan seems like a combination of George Washington , Martin Luther King Jr. , and Dudley DoRight compared to the sacrilege we have in the White House now.

Liberal doesn’t like republican and uses hyperbolic language to denounce him.  This same article has been written 100,000 times this century.

Reagan had deep respect for the office of PotUS.   He would certainly be horrified to observe Trump.    There is no doubt (I would hope everyone realizes at least this fact by now) that Trump is a con-man.   He uses dishonesty to weave his own reality and basically cheat through the game of life.

Something that Trump does not have. And I would not be a bit surprised if Reagan is turning in his grave at being compared to Trump as a great President.

Comparing Trump to Reagan is a real insult to Reagan. In the history of America there has never been such a terrible President as Trump, nor ever sold America to our enemies for their own gain.

In looking back through our history of presidents that succeeded when tough decisions had to be made, they all had a large amount of humility, and empathy.  Trump has neither of those qualities in any measurable amounts.

Lincoln, both Roosevelts, Truman, Eisenhower, Regan, Obama...... All had large measures of humility and empathy.

I would go so far as to include the Presidents that I remember clearly: Carter, and both Bushes. Pres Carter had bushels full of humility and empathy. I think the 2 Bushes did, too, whenever there was a crisis

You should never forget that it was Nancy Reagan herself who coined the term "rightwing nut jobs" to describe evangelical fundamentalist wing of the gop whom she and President Reagan secretly loathed...

I saw the interview with Ron Reagan.  He is smart, articulate and knows what he sees in this current administration.  Calling the Trumps' grifters in my opinion was pulling a punch.  The Trump family is far more than simple grifters.

He isn't telling us anything that we didn't already know.  Trump pushing Goya products from the Oval Office is photographic proof.
