More registered Republicans than Democrats turned out to vote on the first day of early voting in Florida, according to data reviewed by the The Washington Post.
The difference wasn't huge, with 43 percent of those showing up to vote being registered Republicans compared to 42 percent who were registered Democrats. The remaining voters in the group of 339,152 people who cast in-person votes on Monday were third-party or unaffiliated.
Turnout on the first day of early voting in the critical swing state was up nearly 17 percent compared to four years ago when roughly 290,000 cast ballots, the Florida Department of State reported.
President Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden are hotly contesting the state, which Trump won four years ago. Polls show a tight race.
A number of people have already cast write-in ballots, and a total of 2,509,245 voters have already taken part in Florida's election. There are more than 14 million registered voters in the state in total.
Vote-by-mail has seen a massive uptick in popularity this year, with more than 2.5 million ballots collected on the first day of early voting.
An Axios survey released last month showed 75 percent of Americans who strongly disapprove of the president's job performance are likely to vote early by mail.
The risks associated with the coronavirus pandemic has swayed many voters to submit their ballots remotely or via designated drop boxes, as over 22 million votes have already been cast this year across the nation.
Last week, Florida's Division of Elections reported Democrats were leading in early voting, though it noted more Republicans are largely expected to vote on or around the days leading up to Nov. 3.
Trump won Florida by fewer than 120,000 votes in 2016. The Post noted that several counties that favored the president four years ago, including Clearwater, Pinellas, St Petersburg, Duval and Seminole, showed higher turnouts of Democratic voters Monday.
Other states in the South are setting records for absentee voting, with Alabama receiving over three percent more mail-in ballots cast than the previous record set during the 2012 election.
Georgia elections officials also reported landmark early voting turnouts Monday, with 126,876 ballots cast ahead of Election Day, nearly 41 percent more than the previous record set.

A bad sign for Biden
Women and minorities are prominent in all the lines.
Unless I'm wrong that isn't exactly good for Trump...
Is Trump winning a demographic except white men?
You are wrong. Tell us how you think the Cuban Americans in southern Florida are going to vote? They still have the taste of authoritarian/Socialism. You'll lose them, the women, and the seniors. Florida is becoming a red state. Notice the results the 2018 midterms for Florida.
Cuban Americans will vote republican. In 2016 it was 54/41 Trump over Clinton.
Now, Puerto Ricans in Florida is close to being the same as the Cuban population and they vote primarily democratic.
Another large Hispanic voting block is the Columbians and they tend to vote Dem.
The latest polling (3 days ago) among Florida seniors show a deadlock between Trump and Biden.
Blacks make up 16% of the population in Florida and they will vote Biden largely.
Puerto Ricans can't vote for president.
‘You better vote for me’: Trump demands Puerto Ricans elect him despite island not getting presidential vote
Donald Trump has demanded Puerto Ricans vote for him, despite the island’s residents not being able to cast a ballot in the presidential election.
Thank you!
Now, Puerto Ricans in Florida is close to being the same as the Cuban population and they vote primarily democratic.
Many democrats assume that. I don't think the PR vote will automatically be a bloc vote.
Another large Hispanic voting block is the Columbians and they tend to vote Dem.
Let's see some info.
The latest polling (3 days ago) among Florida seniors show a deadlock between Trump and Biden.
I've heard. I don't really think it's that close.
Blacks make up 16% of the population in Florida and they will vote Biden largely.
Agreed. So far that has been a genuine bloc vote. I do think Trump is making inroads into what once was thought to be a given.
From your article............
So did you expect him to say "If you don't vote for me, you ain't Puerto Rican."
Wish Trump would be more artful in his words but he was talking to the PR citizenry as a bloc IN the US.
How do you know? Have the votes been counted yet? Has everyone voted? It seems a little early to make any meaningful prediction.
You should address that to JBB. He's the one who felt strongly that every "other" would be voting for Biden.
I'm addressing it to you, since you made the first comment about it.
Yet it points out that:
"75 percent of Americans who strongly disapprove of the president's job performance are likely to vote early by mail. "
"Vote-by-mail has seen a massive uptick in popularity this year, with more than 2.5 million ballots collected on the first day of early voting."
"The difference (in those who turned out to vote on the first day of early voting ) wasn't huge, with 43 percent of those showing up to vote being registered Republicans compared to 42 percent who were registered Democrats.
So a 1% difference between the votes at the ballot box and 75% of those who strongly disapprove of this President performance likely to vote by mail with a huge increase of mail in ballots already having been collected. I don't see this article or the numbers as being a positive for Trump.
You can fantasize all you want that a 1% early lead in exit polling proves your candidate is ahead, but if only 25% of your opponents are voting at the ballot box and reflected in that early exit poll then your candidate is in serious trouble.
The operative word there is "likely". We will find out.
"Vote-by-mail has seen a massive uptick in popularity this year, with more than 2.5 million ballots collected on the first day of early voting."
Hello! There is a world-wide pandemic we have to worry about.
"The difference (in those who turned out to vote on the first day of early voting ) wasn't huge, with 43 percent of those showing up to vote being registered Republicans compared to 42 percent who were registered Democrats.
That could be deadly if you believe Republicans generally turn out on election day.
So a 1% difference between the votes at the ballot box and 75% of those who strongly disapprove of this President performance likely to vote by mail with a huge increase of mail in ballots already having been collected. I don't see this article or the numbers as being a positive for Trump.
So you say Biden wins Florida and I say Trump wins Florida. I assume we will both be here the day after the election.
You can fantasize all you want that a 1% early lead in exit polling proves your candidate is ahead, but if only 25% of your opponents are voting at the ballot box and reflected in that early exit poll then your candidate is in serious trouble.
You are putting a lot of faith in that. As I said - I believe it's a bad sign for Biden. As a matter of fact I'm convinced of it. Florida goes to Trump.
The key words in your sentence above... Just because someone is registered as one or the other, doesn't mean that's how they're voting in this election.
Absolutely meaningless.
What is?
Hillary tweets out what's in their hearts & minds:
That was the 2016 dream!
Lol, I think you're reading my mail!
My husband works by one of the early voting locations. The lines are very long again today. People are very excited to cast their votes.
I'm glad to hear that.
They say Republicans did real well in registering voters in Florida, while the Biden campaign is putting almost all their money into TV ads.
Yes, they are also saying that republicans seem more enthusiastic about voting. I guess we shall soon see.
We need Florida. I love that state. I wont be able to go this winter....or will I?
I'd love to go there with my kids & grandkids. That's in the works somehow.
I've been content with the racetrack, learning to golf, fishing and on one occasion travelling the everglades in one of those "Airboats."
But ya, bring on Disney!
The weather is great!!
There are a lot of Biden TV ads running. Sometimes you get 2 or three in a row.
Democrats hold a 180,000 registered voter edge as of 8/31/20
The fastest growing voting block registration is the Independent block.
It's always great, especially in Delray Beach!
There are a lot of Biden TV ads running. Sometimes you get 2 or three in a row.
That's where his campaign threw all their money.
We were talking about getting people registered, not the status quo.
Well, after all, it is in Florida. A lot of the fun for me would be watching the kids get excited. You are right - it is a must see!
The husband and I bought a 3 park pass right before the coronavirus hit. We had only used one before they closed. Once they reopened we did go. We did Epcot one Saturday then Magic Kingdom the next Saturday. I was a little unsure but they were very good with making sure everyone wore a mask and kept up with social distancing. It was like being a kid again. There were no wait times more than 10 minutes long and for a change a got tired of riding before I got tired of waiting.
Never been to Florida other than a short layover in Miami on my way to St. Croix.
The first time I went I fell in love with it.
Statewide, registered Democrats currently outpace registered Republicans in vote-by-mail ballots returned. Democrats have mailed in more than 904,000 ballots, while Republicans have returned more than 519,000 ballots. Voters registered with third parties have cast just over 20,000 mail-in ballots, and voters with no party affiliation have returned more than 336,000 vote-by-mail ballots.
The seed is about those who turned out. You may have noticed that it mentioned: "An Axios survey released last month showed 75 percent of Americans who strongly disapprove of the president's job performance are likely to vote early by mail." (Because they are lazy.)
Keep digging.
Keep living in your bubble world, Vic.
So, in your opinion or Axios those that vote by mail are lazy...That's pretty stupid comment but it also includes the over 500,000 republicans as of 10/3 that voted by mail. Nice to know that we are all lazy.
No digging necessary Vic, it's right in your seed:
So YOUR seed cited the number of 'write-in ballots' already cast in FL so you can't deny that you seed is about THAT too.
Let's not make it personal.
So, in your opinion or Axios those that vote by mail are lazy...That's pretty stupid comment but it also includes the over 500,000 republicans as of 10/3 that voted by mail. Nice to know that we are all lazy.
Keep in mind that I also voted by mail. I did it because of the deadly pandemic we are dealing with. It is however my opinion, like it or not, that, other than seniors or those serving in the military, under normal circumstances - people should make the effort to go out and cast a vote if they really care.
I can't and I don't. Let us not try and muddy the waters. The first line of the seed, which the whole article is pinned on is - "More registered Republicans than Democrats turned out to vote on the first day of early voting in Florida, according to data reviewed by the The Washington Post."
So posting a link about mail in voting really does not contradict the premise.
Oh so YOUR excuse for mail in voting is valid but everyone else is lazy.
Convenient Vic.
Many of them are - it's just an opinion. I also believe that deep down the DNC knows it.
Yet you DID and you HAVE. This was YOU:
That was YOU right Vic?
Then stop trying to do so. You posted the seed and shouldn't try to make members ignore the parts you don't want to talk about.
BTFW, the numbers from Florida media tell a different story:
So now it's only the Democratic mail-in voters are lazy. Wow.
[Deleted]
Some of them are simply helping those that would die if they got sick; therefore, not going to stand in line.
Tell us Dulay - Who wins Florida?
Just your opinion.
Deflecting from refuting facts again I see.
I don't have a magic 8 ball Vic.
Oh and since when did you give any credence to my opinion?
I get it...... Exactly as I see it!
"I wish I go with both of you, but I already mailed in my ballot"
"An Axios survey released last month showed 75 percent of Americans who strongly disapprove of the president's job performance are likely to vote early by mail." (Because they are lazy.)
Keep digging."
So you mailed in your vote, so you are admitting that you are lazy then?
In Colorado, in the last 2 out of 3 elections, more republicans voted by mail than Democrats.
In Washington State they have been voting by mail for the last 11 years with virtually no problems.

Yup, a lot of those blue collar democrats will again be voting for Donald Trump.
dream on
How about you?
None of the Biden people here will say they think he's going to win Florida.
Just out of curiosity, what is the point of the question?
Seriously, the fact that the right wing conservatives here make unfounded proclamations about the results of the election ad nauseum shouldn't motivate liberals to follow suit.
It's very simple. I posted a seed about early in person voting in Florida and I posted five words - A bad sign for Biden. Since then there seems to be a lot of debate about Republicans doing well. So if you can't believe or can't stand the idea of Republicans being ahead, simply state that you think Biden is going to win Florida. All of those who showed up here refuse to do that, so I assume they also know that Biden is not going to win Florida.
The no party is a significant amount. It may be close with many Democrats voting for Trump.
Not a chance in hell
