More registered Republicans than Democrats turned out to vote on the first day of early voting in Florida, according to data reviewed by the The Washington Post.

The difference wasn't huge, with 43 percent of those showing up to vote being registered Republicans compared to 42 percent who were registered Democrats. The remaining voters in the group of 339,152 people who cast in-person votes on Monday were third-party or unaffiliated.

Turnout on the first day of early voting in the critical swing state was up nearly 17 percent compared to four years ago when roughly 290,000 cast ballots, the Florida Department of State reported.

President Trump  and Democratic nominee  Joe Biden  are hotly contesting the state, which Trump won four years ago. Polls show a tight race.

A number of people have already cast write-in ballots, and a total of 2,509,245 voters have already taken part in Florida's election. There are more than 14 million registered voters in the state in total.

Vote-by-mail has seen a massive uptick in popularity this year, with more than 2.5 million ballots collected on the first day of early voting.

An Axios survey released last month showed 75 percent of Americans who strongly disapprove of the president's job performance are likely to vote early by mail.

The risks associated with the coronavirus pandemic has swayed many voters to submit their ballots remotely or via designated drop boxes, as over 22 million votes have already been cast this year across the nation.

Last week, Florida's Division of Elections reported Democrats were leading in early voting, though it noted more Republicans are largely expected to vote on or around the days leading up to Nov. 3.

Trump won Florida by fewer than 120,000 votes in 2016. The Post noted that several counties that favored the president four years ago, including Clearwater, Pinellas, St Petersburg, Duval and Seminole, showed higher turnouts of Democratic voters Monday.

Other states in the South are setting records for absentee voting, with Alabama receiving over three percent more mail-in ballots cast than the previous record set during the 2012 election.

Georgia elections officials also reported landmark early voting turnouts Monday, with 126,876 ballots cast ahead of Election Day, nearly 41 percent more than the previous record set.

You are wrong. Tell us how you think the Cuban Americans in southern Florida are going to vote?  They still have the taste of authoritarian/Socialism. You'll lose them, the women, and the seniors. Florida is becoming a red state. Notice the results the 2018 midterms for Florida.

Cuban Americans will vote republican. In 2016 it was 54/41 Trump over Clinton.

Now, Puerto Ricans in Florida is close to being the same as the Cuban population and they vote primarily democratic.

Another large Hispanic voting block is the Columbians and they tend to vote Dem.

The latest polling (3 days ago) among Florida seniors show a deadlock between Trump and Biden.

Blacks make up 16% of the population in Florida and they will vote Biden largely.

Donald Trump has demanded Puerto Ricans vote for him, despite the island’s residents not being able to cast a ballot in the presidential election.

Many democrats assume that. I don't think the PR vote will automatically be a bloc vote.

Another large Hispanic voting block is the Columbians and they tend to vote Dem.

Let's see some info.

I've heard. I don't really think it's that close.

Agreed. So far that has been a genuine bloc vote. I do think Trump is making inroads into what once was thought to be a given.

From your article............

But the Pew Research Center estimates that 20 per cent of all eligible voters in Florida are Latino, and of those 31 per cent identify as Puerto Rican.

According to the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at New York’s Hunter College, there are now more than one million Puerto Ricans living in Florida.

Once Puerto Ricans have left the island and are resident in a US state they can vote in both state and federal elections.

So did you expect him to say "If you don't vote for me, you ain't Puerto Rican."

Wish Trump would be more artful in his words but he was talking to the PR citizenry as a bloc IN the US.

Yet it points out that:

"75 percent of Americans who strongly disapprove of the president's job performance are likely to vote early by mail. "

"Vote-by-mail has seen a massive uptick in popularity this year, with more than 2.5 million ballots collected on the first day of early voting."

"The difference (in those who turned out to vote on the first day of early voting ) wasn't huge, with 43 percent of those showing up to vote being registered Republicans compared to 42 percent who were registered Democrats.

So a 1% difference between the votes at the ballot box and 75% of those who strongly disapprove of this President performance likely to vote by mail with a huge increase of mail in ballots already having been collected. I don't see this article or the numbers as being a positive for Trump.

You can fantasize all you want that a 1% early lead in exit polling proves your candidate is ahead, but if only 25% of your opponents are voting at the ballot box and reflected in that early exit poll then your candidate is in serious trouble.

Hello! There is a world-wide pandemic we have to worry about.

"The difference (in those who turned out to vote on the first day of early voting ) wasn't huge, with 43 percent of those showing up to vote being registered Republicans compared to 42 percent who were registered Democrats.

That could be deadly if you believe Republicans generally turn out on election day.

So a 1% difference between the votes at the ballot box and 75% of those who strongly disapprove of this President performance likely to vote by mail with a huge increase of mail in ballots already having been collected. I don't see this article or the numbers as being a positive for Trump.

So you say Biden wins Florida and I say Trump wins Florida. I assume we will both be here the day after the election.

You are putting a lot of faith in that. As I said - I believe it's a bad sign for Biden. As a matter of fact I'm convinced of it. Florida goes to Trump.

Statewide, registered Democrats currently outpace registered Republicans in vote-by-mail ballots returned. Democrats have mailed in more than 904,000 ballots, while Republicans have returned more than 519,000 ballots. Voters registered with third parties have cast just over 20,000 mail-in ballots, and voters with no party affiliation have returned more than 336,000 vote-by-mail ballots.

It's very simple. I posted a seed about early in person voting in Florida and I posted five words - A bad sign for Biden. Since then there seems to be a lot of debate about Republicans doing well. So if you can't believe or can't stand the idea of Republicans being ahead, simply state that you think Biden is going to win Florida. All of those who showed up here refuse to do that, so I assume they also know that Biden is not going to win Florida.
