Woman's Corpse Discovered in Tanning Bed by Customer

A customer in an Austrian tanning salon discovered a 50-year-old woman's corpse in a sunbed after she noticed that the individual had been inside the cabin for more than two hours.

The woman was discovered at around 4:45 p.m. local time on Sunday, May 23, at a solarium in Deutsch Kaltenbrunn, a town with a population of around 1,700 in the district of Jennersdorf, Austria, according to RTE.DL.

Prior to discovering the body, the customer saw that a cabin was occupied and thought it was suspicious that no sound was coming from it. She knocked on the door and called out to see if anyone inside would answer.
When no one replied, the woman opened the cabin door with a coin and immediately called the emergency services after discovering the lifeless body lying on the tanning bed.
Austrian national newspaper Kronen Zeitung reported that rescue workers attempted to resuscitate the woman, but were unable to do so. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The local authorities said that the woman entered the cabin at around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, but are unsure what happened to her in the time between getting into the bed and being discovered dead more than two hours later.
Investigators found no evidence of any external injuries on the woman, while the salon's operator said that a defect in the bed can be ruled out after it performed a check on it, according to Kronen Zeitung.
In a statement to the outlet, the salon expressed its "deepest condolences to the relatives." The body is currently being examined.
A similar situation occurred in the U.S. in 2012, when the body of 46-year-old Rhonda Waits was discovered facedown in a tanning bed in Texas, after she had been in it for more than a day.
Waits was found by her boyfriend after he had returned from a three-day holiday. The Daily Mail reported that the bed, which worked on a timer system, was found turned off when police arrived at the scene.
Although the radio was left on and medications were found close to the bed, no foul play was suspected in Wait's death.
The sunbed was also ruled out as the cause of the death, as Samson Park Police Chief Randy Driver told CBS: "I've spoken to the medical examiners officer. There is no sign that her death was linked to the tanning bed."
Newsweek has contacted the police department in Jennersdorf for comment.
