Bill Maher Rants at People Still Wearing Covid Masks: It's Over!
Real Time host Bill Maher is fed up with Democrats walking around wearing masks now that the pandemic is over.

By Caleb HoweJun 12th, 2021, 11:28 am

On Friday night's edition of HBO's Real Time, host Bill Maher brought up recent polling on masks and the potential consequences to Democrats politically for their Covid stances.

Maher said that "how we react to coming out of this is looking like a big liability to the Democrats," in reference to the pandemic, adding that he thinks "sometimes their whole attitude toward this was a liability."

He cited a Gallup poll on attitudes toward continuing to wear masks going forward, which showed that a huge majority of Republicans think people who are vaccinated, healthy, and not showing symptoms should "lead their normal lives."

"71% of Democrats: stay home. Keep cowering," Maher said.

"I see people on the street walking outside with a mask on, like you f*cking moron! I just want to shout at them outside the car, you're a moron! You never could get it outside, really, and you're alone walking on the street with a mask?" he said.

Guest Rachel Bitecofer, a Democratic strategist and analyst, responded that "it is stupid, and it's a rejection of science."

"You can't say on one end, we've got to listen to the science and the data, and then when science says you can't get Covid outside and you never could and you don't need a mask anymore, be like, oh, I'm just not going to do it!"

"Now we're over the-It's over. Can we just say it's over?" Maher said at one point. "I know it was great fun to have a pandemic and order Grubhub every night, but…"

"I watch the basketball playoffs now, most of the people are in the stands not wearing masks, and apparently there's no super-spreader event coming out of that. And yet I see the players are playing without masks, they go on the bench, the coach has a mask on! Why? It's just stupid, inconsistent, ass-covering," he said.

"Don't be afraid of the person who isn't" vaccinated, he said. "Life is a risk, everything is a risk."

I usually agree with Bill Maher but he is way off base on this one.

No one is hurt by people who continue to wear masks in public (indoor or outdoor. ) It is their choice. I wore a mask in the grocery store the other day even though I am fully vaccinated.

The difference between the possible outcomes of wearing or not wearing a mask are diametrical . With a mask on you will not contract the virus or spread it, without the mask you COULD contract it or spread it.

Now I understand that masks are not perfect and some people most likely contracted or spread the virus even though they had a mask on.

But the known purpose to wearing a mask is to prevent catching or spreading the disease. There is no potential benefit to NOT wearing a mask.

Ergo, there is more leeway to be given to people who want to wear a mask "too long"  as opposed to any leeway given to those who wanted to take it off too soon.

Maher should mind his own business better.

I still wear my masks, plural, and will after June 15th. California mask mandate goes away. People lie. There will be sneezers and coughers everywhere!!!  And variants are out there. And the science is still in flux. Bill Maher caught Covid-19 (Variant?). What about my FREEDOM to wear a mask?!!

Maher is a hypocrite. And he thinks he should HARRASS people to get his false 'conclusion' out?

I won't bother cussing at him!

Sure - I am fully vaccinated.  And before you ask, I trust science. And I understand that science will tell you what it learns in the moment and what it relearns in the next moment. I am okay with that, but it does not meant I should let all my wards down immediately. (Though, I fully understand why others do so in the interest of the common good.)

I hope I answered your question - if not - "come-back."

I would say there are substantial quality of life benefits to not wearing as mask.

I believe people should simply do what makes them happy....  as long as it's not some hypocritical politician telling me do do something, especially when that POS politician doesn't him-herself do what they demand others do.

But, I do admit to laughing at people driving with surgical type rubber gloves, mask and face shields on with no-one else in the car.

That would be me, you're smirking at! I put my 'gear' on before I leave home. I can be alone (with my gear on) in my car. It makes me happy! Besides, it only takes one "Son of a Boy" to drive up on me and spit into my car window or catch me before I pull out of a parking space to ruin my 'moment' talking through my window to me a "captured" audience.

Happens somewhere on the planet everyday; bet!

But, if it send shivers up and down your leg, go for it, but please don't be offended if I pass and bend over in hysterics.

'Child' it would not bother me in the least! I know better. Shit happens! Everyday somewhere on the planet, somebody is being spit on and held "captured" in their car seat by somebody's 'mouth' breathing on them. People lie too! Or, have not gotten both shots:

"Oh, I forgot (to go back)"  "I had to go back for a second one, well I didn't!"

People can be full of it!

And then there are the variants that are spreading-still.  Oh and the 'shots' (jabs) are not 100% coverage either. I want to try not to be a "damn statistic" anyway!

All that said, I do feel better about having my jabs!

I won't laugh out loud but I will chuckle internally. As far as I'm concerned it's a persons choice and if they want to wear a mask (or 2 or 3) then it's their choice. I don't wear a mask most places anymore as I am fully vaccinated and the science is on my side. Does that make me 100% safe?  Nope,  i understand the science of that. There has been so much fear pushed over mask wearing, fear and shaming. I have several medical people in my immediate family and we all know that unless you are wearing a properly fitted m95 mask,  you are not fully safe. The major purpose of people wearing masks was to reduce the potential of them spreading the virus in gross discharges (read water droplets from breathing, talking or sneezing) and really does nothing to prevent the virus from getting past the mask barrier.

The only piece of this that does bother me are the people who fight about a business mandating mask wearing in places where government has lifted the requirement. I'm a firm believer that the business gets to set the tone in their establishment and if they want all patrons to be masked then all patrons should mask up. When people push back on my wearing a mask in such places I simply ask them why if they agree that a bakery can refuse to bake a gay wedding cake then why don't they agree that a business can mandate that customers wear masks.

My wife and I got our shots early on in the American embassy here.   Fortunately, I had no side effects while the wife felt like crap the day after the second one, which I have found is fairly common among women for some reason.

The purported reason for masks was eliminating spreading the virus.  Unfortunately, the people were misinformed.  Unless they had specific masks, and constantly replaced those masks with new ones, never touched them once they were on, except to take it off and replace it, masks provided a placebo effect at best.  Further, most people wore them improperly and ill fitting anyway.

But I agree with you on business owners rights.  That's their business and have the right to operate it as they desire....  even if they might chase potential customers away.

The 'good news' for I constantly see people treating their masks 'poorly' and mishandling them, or keeping them 'around' too long. Arrrgh! Another reason not to trust other people with your 'breathing apparatus' that is, lungs. But, I digress.

The 'good news is most of us are not around serious threats or high percentage areas of sick and contagious people, so we benefit from the absence (silence). Our mask mistakes or whatever have not or don't catch up with the blunders we make!

Businesses know their properties. Do they have the proper measures in place? Yes or No? Businesses are indoors and the risks remain higher (when an asymptomatic person or sick person is on the grounds) there.

That's apparently how I caught it. After having had Covid plus both shots, I would hope that immunity is there. Not much else I can do.

Listening to the science going forward, I will probably get a booster shot if recommended.

I think it's also the responsibility of the individual person to decide how much risk they are willing to accept. Nothing is 100% certain in this life.

Masks are evidentially more than a placebo. So don't do that. It is damn near impossible to see how an invisible germ migrates around us (for instance - through the eyes), nevertheless. We do the best we can and to be clear the science does fluctuate (the nature of science) and many of us are "so-so" at keeping up with the latest rendition of scientific news 'daily.'

I have an 80 year old friend who never wore a mask throughout the whole year 'experience' of people dying around the country (and here locally) with the virus. Now, he has informed me he is not getting vaccinated either!

He is one of those 'adorable' people who likes to be soft-spoken (rarely raise their voices) get in close when they speak and not regard personal space worth a damn! (Of course, I just keep backing up and let him do his 'thang.')

He is representative of that percentage of people, who don't know what they "H" he has at any given moment virus-related and will blend in with the rest of the community unbeknown; hop in a car, get in-close quarters, and breath on other people - now and in the Fall 2021!

All that said: I am getting 'better' y'all. I might let a coupla things relax this summer - we'll see!  I do admit that I love to see other people enjoying themselves again. Kids going back to school, etceteras. It looks good out there again. It's uplifting spiritually! People need it!

One last thing: The "eye" thing. It dawned on me just yesterday as I was doing an 'assessment'  of stuff - I do that you know. It took this virus for me to learn that we have mucous membranes in our eyes that can catch viruses (or other stuff?) and. . . maybe that is how we catch colds and flu too? Through our eye membranes?

Uh-uh. I don't want people coughing in my face this summer or sneezing. My "membranes" don't want none of that! jrSmiley_54_smiley_image.gif

I have read that he was fully vaccinated before he tested positive. However, I don’t know that he ever experienced any symptoms. I believe he missed taping one week out of an abundance of caution only, but was back at it the following week, so he clearly did just fine.

Thank you. That's right he is/was asymptomatic. Booey for him. Some of us are entitled to try and not get it before we get all the benefits of not ever having it. I read that COVID-19 is no joke and majorly or minorly affects multiple (all) systems of the body. Or maybe that is just medical science hyperbole that one can get from one article or another (I truly don't know.).

There is a problem with the quote @4, nevertheless.

Hey, if you want to go through life with a mask on, I won’t try to stop you.

But there is a bit of a problem with the fear lasting beyond what is rational. It will keep businesses in the mode of requiring masks even where they aren’t necessary. It will cause government to maintain restrictions that are no longer necessary. That’s where the personal choice ceases to be personal and starts impacting everyone else.

The operative wording is : "through life" there. Who is saying anything like continuing (day and night) "through life" with a mask on?

I propose we just give it more time and I support the science: It's people that can be full of bull patty! We, people, are the problem. Incidentally, I just watched (today) G7 world leaders taking another picture. German Chancellor Merkel arrived wearing a mask, stood for the picture without it, and promptly put it back on as she left the platform. What is she signaling? Did she have her vaccinations (in time for this convention) or not?

Also, there are some medical professionals who are exercising their liberty (and it is causing reasonable concern for their professions/careers) to not take the shot/shots/jabs. I can't speak to the right or wrong of it on one hand (mandate) or the other (liberty). A tough 'call.'

As for my part, I just don't put any stock in some people who will 'jack' us around and/or maybe not apologize (weakly) for making others individually or collectively sick or dead.

Again: For my part, I am getting 'better' about easing up on myself. Even as I "watch, read, and wait."

I think if a person feels like they need to keep wearing masks even though they are fully vaccinated, then there really is nothing that will ever prompt them to take it off. Arguably, this is the same as simply washing your hands frequently, which is something I do to avoid stomach "flu."

But again, people can do as they want on that front, as far as I am concerned. It's the unvaccinated people without masks that concern me.

German Chancellor Merkel arrived wearing a mask, stood for the picture without it, and promptly put it back on as she left the platform. What is she signaling? Did she have her vaccinations (in time for this convention) or not?

It looks like she got vaccinated in April, so she's in good shape. But in a setting like a big conference, some people may not be, so they probably have protocols and she is going through the motions of following them. That will go on for a while to varying degrees in different parts of the world.

Also, there are some medical professionals who are exercising their liberty (and it is causing reasonable concern for their professions/careers) to not take the shot/shots/jabs. I can't speak to the right or wrong of it on one hand (mandate) or the other (liberty). A tough 'call.'

Yeah, this is an interesting aspect of this. I know a few people personally who have settled on this policy. They are basically waiting (or at least, they say they are) for the FDA to give their standard approval of the vaccines. They are leery of getting the shot based on emergency approval. Of all the arguments for not getting a vaccine, I think this is the most legitimate. For me, it was urgent enough of an issue, that my whole family has been vaccinated already. Even my youngest got her second one a week ago. No complaints here.

Really? Okay. My plan anyway, the plan, should it come to pass, is to take off my 'coverings' after an abundance of caution. That is, let the science settle a bit more. In my case, I can afford to do so.

I want the safety and none of the bull patty people are putting down with not wearing masks. To this day, the occasional 'one' gets in my car and can't help oneself but to sneeze or cough. It is a comfort to me to know that though my windows are open, my nose is not bare to their 'elements' whatever it may be.

Come next Tuesday, June 15, 2021 I will be surrounded by people not wearing masks outside and about. So, they can be comfortable along with the non- vaxxers or those who can't cope. I will be comfortable watching and enjoying them doing what it is they do. It's getting back to normal. That I will like. Just I don't want or need a 'head-ache' of one more thing to deal with!

Yes, well the other world leaders did not put on visible (to the public) masks. That said, for all appearances, she seems to be exercising her option to mask when and where she wills. More power to her. Because there are 'losers' out there who will mess other people up—intentionally or unintentionally.

Mr. Maher is incorrect. The pandemic is still going on. According to the Mayo Clinic, about 70% of the population will need to be immune to Covid before herd immunity is reached. The US is currently at 37%. So we're only about halfway there.
