Lindsey Graham accuses Biden of making the GOP 'look like a f---ing idiot' after he tied a bipartisan infrastructure deal to a larger spending package

  • Graham blasted Biden for tying a bipartisan infrastructure deal to a larger spending package.

  • "That's extortion!" Graham told Politico hours after Biden announced Thursday's bipartisan deal.

  • Top Democrats hope to pass a massive infrastructure plan through the reconciliation process.

  • See more stories on Insider's business page.

Sen. Lindsey Graham on Thursday blasted President Joe Biden for linking a bipartisan infrastructure deal to a larger spending package that covers the rest of his priorities.

If Biden is "gonna tie them together, he can forget it!" the South Carolina Republicantold Politico.

"I'm not doing that. That's extortion!" Graham continued, per Politico. "I'm not going to do that. The Dems are being told you can't get your bipartisan work product passed unless you sign on to what the left wants, and I'm not playing that game."

Graham's comments came hours after Biden emerged from an Oval Office meeting with a bipartisan group of 10 senators toannounce that they struck an agreementon a $1 trillion infrastructure package. The framework provides funding for physical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, broadband access, and public transit. But a massive chunk of Biden's original infrastructure plan, including investments in policy areas like childcare and eldercare, education and climate change, has been cut.

The president and the 10 lawmakers, which included GOP Sens. Mitt Romney of Utah and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, along with Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Krysten Sinema of Arizona, celebrated the bipartisan dealmaking in a brief news conference outside the White House.

"We made serious compromises on both ends," Biden said.

But Biden said in a speech shortly afterward that he wants to see Congress work on the infrastructure bill "in tandem" with a bigger bill that includes his other major spending initiatives.

"For me, investment in our physical and human infrastructure are inextricably intertwined," Biden said. "Both make us stronger."

Top House and Senate Democratssignaled the same, hoping to pass the second, multitrillion-dollar piece of legislation on a straight party-line vote through a process called budget reconciliation.

"There ain't no infrastructure bill without the reconciliation bill," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters on Thursday.

But Graham fiercely rebuked the idea and suggested that Biden pulled a fast one on the GOP senators who negotiated the bipartisan deal with him.

"Most Republicans could not have known that," Graham told Politico. "There's no way. You look like a f---ing idiot now."

"I don't mind bipartisanship, but I'm not going to do a suicide mission," he added, per Politico.

I am not "my brother's" keeper. Nor do I condone what it is you are referencing. Just like I didn't with all the vile nasty bullshit thrown at Mrs. Trump OR Mrs. Obama. Yes, there was your occasional meme that was just plain funny directed at both that got a vote from me but other than that, ANY nasty crap thrown at ANY person in the public eye isn't very good form.

Lol, like they would even allow the deal to go to a vote in the first place.

See, at this point I can’t even get mad at Biden for potentially blowing the thing up because I never for one second believed the GOP was honestly negotiating to begin with.

Bingo it did me too. The title is misleading possibly??? Who knows. We would have to ask Mr. Graham for sure but I think because Mr. Biden was all giddy about striking a bipartisan deal and broadcasting it and then flip flopping within an hour, he was saying Mr. Biden was looking like an idiot.

As Ed Morrissey wrote about Joe's flip flop:

"It’s tough to understand what Biden is thinking. If he wanted to do infrastructure through reconciliation, why bother with the bipartisan effort at all? It looks much more like Schumer and Pelosi bullied Biden into this ‘tandem’ approach, which provides zero incentive for the GOP to cooperate or collaborate. What’s the point, if Democrats will steamroll them for the rest of their massive demand anyway?

McConnell’s speech probably kills any ability to get ten votes from Republicans on the bipartisan deal. Even the negotiators in this case have to feel at least a little like Graham suggests, and perhaps more than a little after Biden’s stunning two-hour reversal. If Biden doesn’t go back to his original commitment, then he can kiss any chance of GOP cooperation good-bye for the rest of this session … and watch his entire agenda go down in flames."

The only mistake Biden might make is believing that he could get Republican support on anything. McConnell has shown time and time again that the only thing he cares about is not letting Democrats get a "win" i.e. a quality bill that helps the American people and makes Democrats look good in the eyes of voters. Republicans keep holding out the specter of bipartisanship but almost never follow through even when Democrats compromise, they keep wanting more and more until the bill being proposed is so full of poison pills no one wants to vote for it anymore.

The fact is McConnell and Republicans used reconciliation to get much of Trumps agenda through including the massive tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations back in 2017. But now that Democrats are in the majority McConnell and Graham and other dishonest Republicans whine and complain that reconciliation shouldn't be used. Republican hypocrisy truly knows no bounds.

Biden had 11 Republicans commits to the actual infrastructure bill. That's more than  he needs. McConnell was powerless to stop it.

Now that Biden's double crossed Republicans, that's out the window.

Bullshit. Yesterday was a perfect example of compromise and I think the agreed upon framework probably had a damned good chance of going through. They are screwing the pooch with this "demand" that the other bill go through with it or neither will. It's crap. And as I posted elsewhere yesterday, they are up to their old Reagan, amnesty, and border security bullshit. Hold the carrot out there and pull it away at the last minute.

You misunderstand..........completely. The "repukes" [Deleted] weren't opposed to the infrastructure plan that was hashed out in the meeting. Then, Mr. Biden, at the bidding of Ms. Pelosi, changed the rules. Had Mr. Biden laid the both bills thing on the table, I am sure the meeting would have been quite short. He got a deal basically struck and then moved the goal post. Period

Biden had 11 Republicans commits to the actual infrastructure bill.

11 Republican Senators said they would support a bill that was less than 25% of what the original infrastructure bill would provide and was drafted by a small bipartisan group of 10 senators who drafted the plan in an attempt to win support on Capitol Hill but had not yet earned the blessing of congressional leaders or the White House. Dozens of Democrat Senators said they would not support the bill so even with the 11 Republicans they do not have enough support to pass the relatively tiny infrastructure bill proposed by Republicans and a handful of Democrats.

This would be like 12 Democrats saying they would sign on to the tax cut back in 2017 so that McConnell wouldn't have to use reconciliation to pass it but that the tax cut had to be cut from $2 trillion down to $500 billion and 90% of it would be for the middle class instead of the extremely wealthy and corporations. Would Republicans ever have compromised like that so they wouldn't have to use reconciliation? Of course not, that's why their whining and moaning now just expose them as monumental hypocrites.

Lol, that wasn’t a possibility from the moment he won the election. The GOP had never had any remote interest in bipartisanship, and the Democrats should give up on the idea.
