(CNN)The top members of the select committee investigating the January 6 riot on Capitol Hill refuted recent claims by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy that former President Donald Trump has been cleared by the Justice Department of any role in the insurrection.

"(McCarthy) has suggested, based on an anonymous report, that the Department of Justice has concluded that Donald Trump did not cause, incite, or provoke the violence on January 6th," the statement read. "When this anonymous report was first published, the Select Committee queried the Executive Branch agencies and congressional committees involved in the investigation. We've received answers and briefings from the relevant entities, and it's been made clear to us that reports of such a conclusion are baseless." The statement by Committee Chairman Rep. Bennie Thompson and Vice Chair Rep. Liz Cheney calls out McCarthy's comments to KGET-TV this week where he suggested Trump played no role in coordinating the insurrection. Kevin McCarthy among GOP lawmakers whose phone records January 6 select committee asks to be preserved "That's where law enforcement comes. The FBI has investigated this. The Senate had bipartisan committees come back. And you know what they've found -- that there's no involvement. But this is purely political in how Nancy Pelosi has handled this," McCarthy, a California Republican, said in the interview with KGET. McCarthy and many other Republicans have used a report from Reuters that claims the FBI has found "scant evidence" that the January 6 riots were coordinated. CNN has not independently confirmed that report. Read More The committee making it clear that Trump has not been cleared of any wrongdoing related to January 6 gives a clear indication that the former President and his allies remain a focal point in their investigation. "We will continue to pursue all elements of this investigation in a nonpartisan and thorough manner. We also remind Minority Leader McCarthy of his statements following January 6th, including his statement from the House Floor on January 13th—which are inconsistent with his recent comments," the committee's Saturday statement continued. A week after the insurrection, McCarthy said on the House floor that, "The President bears responsibility for Wednesday's attack on Congress by mob rioters. ... He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding. These facts require immediate action by President Trump."

Funny how when details of Trumps horrid behavior and accounts of him calling soldiers "losers" and "suckers" came from anonymous sources every Republican dismissed them without a second thought claiming anything from an anonymous source must be "fake news". But when they get details from an anonymous report that claims to exonerate Trump they come out and make public statements of total vindication and triumph as if the anonymous report shouldn't be questioned. If conservative Republicans didn't have double standards they'd have no standards at all.

I recall hearing several Trump sycophants even here declaring vindication after McCarthy came out and made his spurious claims. No doubt all we'll hear from them now is 'crickets'.

Trump could finger all their grandkids in Macy's window on Thanksgiving Day and these hardcore Trumptards would still support him...

They'd just claim he's a skilled pediatric gynecologist checking them for cervix cancer... He can literally do no wrong to some of these dipshits.

It's so fucking hypocritical of the right to decry investigations into the 'oranges' of the Jan. 6th riot.

For Trump's ENTIRE term, they screamed from the rooftops that the origins of the Russia investigation would nail just about everyone in Obama's Administration and in the leadership of the FBI. NONE of that happened. But to this day they keep their hopes high that Durham will pull something out of his ass to vindicate their YEARS of whining.

One need only review the plethora of investigations about Benghazi to recognize that the right was all about digging into every detail of what happened that day right down to what color of slippers was Hillary wearing when the call came in.

None, as in zero, of the six hundred insurrectionists charged with committing violent crimes at Trump's January 6th Attempted Coup were ANTIFA or BLM!

Not even one...
