Canadian truckers send Trudeau into hiding and may help end mandates
It suddenly became obvious to many people in the world that the systems of government we thought we had – responsive to the public, deferential to rights, controlled by courts – were no longer in place. There seemed to be a substructure that was hiding in plain sight until it suddenly took full control, to the cheers of the media and the presumption that this is just the way things are supposed to be..Tucker Carlson

You've heard of Hidin' Biden. Our neighbor to the north, my native land, just outdid that with Cut-and-Run Justin.

With the pandemic in full swing, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged Canadians to show support for those helping to keep food on their tables. "While many of us are working from home, there are others who aren't able to do that — like the truck drivers who are working day and night to make sure our shelves are stocked. So when you can, please #ThankATrucker for everything they're doing and help them however you can," he tweeted March 31, 2020.

Trudeau had a chance to thank thousands of them personally over the weekend, as the truckers who've assembled what they call the Freedom Convoy to protest COVID vaccine mandates and restrictions cruised into the capital. Instead, he fled — breaking isolation to do it.

On Saturday, the Trudeaus moved from their official Ottawa residence to the classic "undisclosed location." Dad had started a five-day isolation Wednesday after one of his kids tested COVID-positive — but security accompanied the first family as he fled.

It was yet another example of how far the apple's fallen from the tree. Taunted by striking mail-truck drivers in Montreal in 1970, then-PM Pierre Trudeau (whose son Justin was born the next year) gave it right back to them, snapping, "Mangez de la merde!"

While Justin was comfortably in hiding, thousands braved an extreme-cold warning to join the truck drivers who'd come to Parliament Hill from points east and west. Some say they won't leave until lawmakers remove restrictions — or Trudeau resigns.

Three days before Trudeau holed up, he was dismissive of the rolling thunder approaching: "The small fringe minority of people who are on their way to Ottawa, who are holding unacceptable views that they are expressing, do not represent the views of Canadians who have been there for each other, who know that following the science and stepping up to protect each other is the best way to ensure our rights, our freedoms, our values as a country."

Biden isn't the only leader lecturing his citizens on this continent about what's approved thought — and clueless about the widespread anger over nearly two years of seemingly endless "emergency" rules and restrictions.

The Freedom Convoy started as a vehicle to protest the mandate, which went into effect Jan. 15, that all travelers be fully vaccinated before crossing into Canada. From the start, it was about more than getting jabbed: 90% of Canadian truck drivers are fully vaxxed, far more than the 78% of the general population. And it soon became a wider movement against heavy-handed governance.

Canadians and Americans see the vaccinated and unvaccinated alike spread the virus that's mutated into a less-dangerous variant and wonder why they have to show their papers to make a living. They watch case numbers drop, along with deaths and hospitalizations, and want to know when they'll get their lives back.

A GoFundMe for this "small fringe minority" raised nearly $9 million in just two weeks. Sure, they're only Canadian dollars, but the fuel and food they'll buy are priced in Canadian dollars.

And people across the cold country organized rallies to cheer the truckers on when they passed by. A 76-year-old Ontario woman worked around the clock to bake the convoy 10 dozen muffins. An Alberta woman about half her age made Freedom Convoy 2022 T-shirts and hoodies saying, "Thank you, truckers," with a vehicle picture labeled "East Bound & Down."

Conservative leader Erin O'Toole couldn't resist this popular pressure. "It's not for the leader of the opposition or political party to attend a protest on the Hill or a convoy," he said Monday. He soon changed his tune and agreed to meet the convoy when it came, noting that "the thousands of people coming here in the next few days, the trucker convoy, is a symbol of the fatigue in our country right now."

Disdainful media, of course, spent days warning of violence to come and searched supporters' messages for evidence of racism. " 'So many angry people': Experts say online conversation around trucker convoy veering into dangerous territory" read a CTV News headline. CBC, Canada's PBS and NPR, called Saturday's protest "a raucous demonstration that has police on high alert for possible violence even as organizers urge the crowd to be peaceful." Police said that night that "no incidents of violence or injuries" were reported and no protesters faced charges.

The elite media also paint the protesters as stupid hicks, claiming they don't understand that provincial governments all have restrictions that Ottawa can do nothing about. But Saskatchewan premier Scott Moe told truckers he supports their "call to end the cross border ban on unvaccinated truckers" and announced his government will soon "be ending our proof of negative test/proof of vaccination policy in Saskatchewan."

"If one province would do it I think the rest will follow suit," the supporter who told me the Moe news mused.

That "small fringe minority" might end up doing a lot more than simply scaring Cut-and-Run Justin.

Last I heard GoFundMe froze the money until they can "verify how they will be dispersed."

Disgraceful.

Top Canadian defence officials condemn protesters dancing on Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

"I am sickened to see protesters dance on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and desecrate the National War Memorial," said Gen. Wayne Eyre in a message on Twitter. "Generations of Canadians have fought and died for our rights, including free speech, but not this. Those involved should hang their heads in shame."

Well, what happened there is unusual for Canadians - even this protest is not exactly anything like your Jan 6 one.  After all, Canadians are normally very polite when they protest.

I think Norm Macdonald (the best thing Canada ever produced) said it best: "America is always more political, after all if they elect the wrong guy it could mean nuclear annihilation." Canadians can only get mad about minor local issues.
