What Would Be Your Funeral Song?
A lot of people choose a song, or more than one song, to be played at their funeral service. Hopefully it will be in the distant future, but people do make their choice known to their friends and family.
I did this about 5 years ago and got some interesting responses, so we'll do it again.

Post a song or two that you would really like to see played at your final goodbye to this whirl.

The song that will be played as I leave for my final journey will be the Irish ballad Raglan Road. Although it is normally sung, I'm thinking I'll have it played by a single bagpiper.
"let grief be a falling leaf at the dawning of the day"
My second choice is The Rose. I heard it played at a family funeral and found it very moving in that context.
Some say love, it is a river that drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor that leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger an endless aching need
I say love, it is a flower and you, it's only seed
It's the heart, afraid of breaking that never learns to dance
It's the dream, afraid of waking that never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken who cannot seem to give
And the soul, afraid of dying that never learns to live
When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long
And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter far beneath the bitter snow
Lies the seed that with the sun's love, in the spring becomes the rose
Claire De Lune is instrumental so Peggy Lee's Is That All There Is?...
My cousin had My Way and at reception my Uncle had " Rednecks, White Socks and Blue Ribbon Beer" played and had PBR served. Both songs were very appropriate for them.
Old school?
Amazing Grace doesn’t even make the list?
Amazing!
Anoon...
VNV nation - Nova (shine your light on me)..
Morning John...thanks for that...
great song, NICE to see another VNV fan
Either version or both...each is unique and special.
Israel’s cover of the song is next level stuff ....

So many better Offspring songs lol.
eulogy theme. 2nd choice was pretty fly for a white guy.
that one suits you
Also would include these two.
Somewhat different from what I chose 5 years ago, this time let's make it a concert.
First of all we'll start with Frank Sinatra singing the song Paul Anka wrote for him - My Way (LINK) ->
Then we'll listen to the magnificent voice of Andrea Bocelli singing Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah (LINK) ->
Following that will be Neil Young singing 'Helpless', his song about his home town in North Ontario, accompanied by The Band with Joni Mitchell adding a bit to the chorus (at least Neil and Joni know me) (LINK) ->
And we'll wrap it up with the 4th movement of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, the Ode to Joy (from the movie Copying Beethoven, one of the best versions of that composition I've ever heard) (LINK) ->
That's going to be an awfully long funeral Buzz. It reminds me of when one of the keynote speakers at a BC graduation started his speech by recalling the longest commencement speech took place at Harvard University and ran over 2 hours long. Then he said "the good news is mine will only run about an hour and 30 minutes."
I don't want music at my funeral. A moment of silence at Saratoga Race Track & Foxwoods Casino will do just fine.
All 4 songs add up to 28 minutes, Vic. That's not SO long. Talking about so long, maybe I should add "So Long It's Been Good To Know You" at the end.
Good choice!
!!!
Poems, Prayers, and Promises by John Denver.
Thank you Sir!
I've already told my ex-wife I want a mini-recorder in the casket with me, set to play the 'Pop goes the weasel" tune. hehe..
that's hilarious! I love it, can I steal the idea?
Gotta love the public domain. Feel free, I don't remember where I first got the idea but I'm sure it was from someone else too.
No funeral, no memorial service. To be cremated and spread over ocean and forest. IF a few family members want to gather, a few of songs I'd liked played:
I'll Fly Away - Johnny Cash,
Mansion Over the Hilltop - Elvis
Sentimental Journey - Ella Fitzgerald
A memorial service is in order but no funeral. I have already told my family that if they don't play Rush's "Time Stand Still" I will come back to haunt them....in the form of a cat
That is brilliant. They can barely keep a straight face.
Blood on the Raisers.
Told my wife I wanted this played if I died during a jump when I was assigned to the 82d.
Once a Trooper always a Trooper.
I think I would have to go with "I Don't Wanna Be Me" from Type O Negative.
Love Type O Negative!
That and Food For The Worms from Exodus come to mind as well.
Maybe... Wish You Were Here. Roger Waters acoustic version.
I’ll be dead. Do whatever you want.
NOTE: Thank you, JR for reminding me of what matters. (Smile.)
When I die one child will be born to carry on in this world.
I would never be allowed by my loved ones to choose my own songs - probably for good reason.
