National Review Editor Outraged Trump Wasn’t Made President Of Earth on Star Trek But Stacy Abrams Was, How Is That Even Fair?
We knew that she was a fan of the show and of Trek in general, and for us, there was no one better to be that President. Alex and I reached out to her, and she was kind enough to get on a Zoom with us. We pitched her the very basics of that part of the season – just that Earth would rejoin (she didn’t want spoilers, so we shared just enough to give her context) – and then talked to her about who this character is and what she represents. We asked if she’d be interested and she was kind enough...

National Review Editor Outraged Trump Wasn’t Made President Of Earth on Star Trek But Stacy Abrams Was, How Is That Even Fair?

4-4 minutes   Invalid Date

G rown adult National Review Editor Jack Butler expressed outrage that former President Donald Trump would never be made president of Star Trek’s United Earth, but Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams was granted that honor.

Viewers of this week’s season finale of  Star Trek: Discovery   got to witness Trek history, as Ms. Abrams   made a guest-starring appearance   as the POTUE, or President of the United Earth.

Without spoiling the plot, President Abrams is  greeted  by a coterie of Starfleet and Federation luminaries that includes  Sonequa Martin-Green’s  Captain  Michael Burnham , the first Black woman to captain a Trek show.

It was a dream come true for Abrams, an avowed Trekkie who proved her mettle   as the runaway champion   of a Trek trivia competition at a virtual campaign event for soon-to-be President (of part of Earth)   Joe Biden   that included 19 past and present Star Trek cast members. It was a   delight   for her co-stars, and for many fans.

But it just didn’t sit right with Butler, who penned a commentary for his site   entitled   “Stacey Abrams Does Not Deserve to Be President of Earth.”

Butler makes his case by first comparing Abrams’ objections to the outcome of her last governor’s race to Trump’s Big Lie, a   comparison that   Abrams has   repeatedly rejected . Yet Abrams is rewarded with a 32nd century presidency, and Trump — who knows what Star Trek has him doing in the year 3124 or whenever?

Would Star Trek ever dream of making Donald Trump “President of Earth”? And I don’t mean in the way that the evil genetic superman Khan Noonien Singh once despotically ruled one-quarter of earth’s population. In classic Trek fashion, Abrams is shown as the logical and inevitable result of the kind of technocratic progressivism that the show has long advanced, a fruition of our highest ideals. Her behavior in the political sphere does not seem to bear this out. Apart from the election denial, there was this infamous photo, showing her reveling in the disparity of being maskless while surrounded by masked children. Given this, why hold her up as a model?

Or maybe she’s a huge fan who the producers thought would do a good job, as showrunner   Michelle Paradise   told   Deadline:

We knew that she was a fan of the show and of Trek in general, and for us, there was no one better to be that President. Alex and I reached out to her, and she was kind enough to get on a Zoom with us. We pitched her the very basics of that part of the season – just that Earth would rejoin (she didn’t want spoilers, so we shared just enough to give her context) – and then talked to her about who this character is and what she represents. We asked if she’d be interested and she was kind enough to say yes. It was just an amazing thing. She did such an incredible job, it was a privilege for all of us to get to work with her, and we’re so grateful she joined us for that.

But who knows what next season has in store. Maybe some 21st-century political figure will be thawed out or escape a holodeck to make Butler’s dream of a fictional second Trump term a reality.

I'll say this - Trump probably would have gotten better ratings.

He would have had the set in chaos.  He would go off script with his big lie and drive everyone crazy.  He would demand that craft services only have Big Macs, Diet Coke, and KFC.  He might be okay as the son of Jabba The Hud though in Star Wars.  No fat suit would be required, just some green paint.

Trump never watched Star Trek just like he never played catch with his sons or did anything a normal father would do with his children.  He raised them exactly the same way he was raised.

Can't remember the name.

"Village of the Damned" 1960

"The inhabitants of the British village of Midwich suddenly fall unconscious, as does anyone entering the village. The military establishes a cordon around Midwich and sends in a man wearing a gas mask, but he, too, falls unconscious and is pulled back with rope. The man awakens and reports experiencing a cold sensation just before passing out. The pilot of a military reconnaissance plane is contacted and asked to investigate. When he flies below 5,000 feet, he loses consciousness and the plane crashes. A five-mile exclusion zone around the village is established for all aircraft. After approximately four hours, the villagers regain   consciousness, and all are apparently unaffected."

Two months later, all women and girls of child-bearing age in the affected area are discovered to be pregnant, sparking many accusations of both   infidelity   and   extramarital sex (something we know conservatives hate and would never tolerate... /s). The accusations fade as the extraordinary nature of the pregnancies is discovered, with seven-month fetuses appearing after only five months. All the women give birth on the same day. Their children have an unusual appearance, including "arresting" eyes, odd scalp hair construction and color (platinum blonde), and unusually narrow fingernails.

At age three, the children are  precocious , physically and mentally the equivalent of children four times their age. Their behavior has become even more unusual and striking. They dress impeccably, always walk as a group, speak in an adult manner, and behave maturely, but they show no  conscience  or  love , and demonstrate a coldness to others, causing the villagers to fear and be repulsed by them."

With the Trumps it's a little bit different, by age 30 the children were petulant , physically and mentally the equivalent of children four times younger than their age, just like their father. They still dress impeccably, always walk as a group, speak in an adult manner, and behave immaturely, and they show no conscience or love, and demonstrate a coldness to others and an inability for rational thought, causing rational patriotic Americans to suspect and be repulsed by them.

Oddly enough, I thought it was "Children of the Corn",

also a horror movie made in 1960 with the same creepy eye special effects....

an early Stephen King novl & movie

Children of the Corn was just a Stephen King short story later made into a movie.  So many of his short stories, novellas, and novels, have been made into movies.

I have a question   -  if Trump is no longer the leader of the Republican Party or a candidate for president, and he's a has been, why would anyone want him to be president of earth on a television show?

Has he ever even Trekked?

Trump would never hold office on Star Trek.  Except maybe on Ferenginar.  He could maybe play Grand Nagus.

My choice would be the tar creature that killed Tasha Yar in TGNG.  Harvey Mudd although a villain was at least likable in a crazy uncle sort of way.

Who is it that says Liberals can't let him go....

Between things like this and now saying he would have won if not for media bias, yes republicans are still not letting it go.

Anyway, congrats to Abrams.

"Would Star Trek ever dream of making Donald Trump “President of Earth”? And I don’t mean in the way that the evil genetic superman Khan Noonien Singh once despotically ruled one-quarter of earth’s population."

That's like saying "Would a movie producer ever cast Amy Schumer as Mother Teresa? And I don't mean in the way that a foul mouthed comedian who talks about her sex life openly would act, she would play a character of utmost dignity and purity".

Of course if Star Trek had gone with Trump or a Trump-like POTUE for their representation of the future it would obviously have been a role inspired by Trumps clear desire to be a dictator.

(spoiler) I also find it interesting that the new Picard series has him time traveling back to 2024 to stop the earths apparent future shift to totalitarianism. Perhaps the change Q made in the past was helping a right wing totalitarian like Trump get re-elected which sentenced humanity to centuries of right wing fascist control.

Perhaps Q is the Q we've all been hearing about in Qanon... It would certainly make sense, a God-like being using gullible humans tempted towards selfish self-centered desires by promising them a return to their racist white right wing conservative Christian roots, a promise to protect the "white right wing conservative Christian American first" policy they so desperately desire. No one will ever believe you if you tell them a lie they don't want to be true, but if you tell them a lie they dream about being true almost daily, well you're going to have a lot of faithful followers who would literally suck the jelly out of a fat greasy serial adulterer with a refrigerator temp IQ's prick, and are not only not disgusted, they're demanding more.

Which would mean the ST:TNG writing team was prescient.

And is also pretty scary.  At least in the Star Trek context, humans being gullible can be excused, because Q is damn near omnipotent.  Who can hope to not be fooled or at least controlled by him.

IRL, Q is just an asshole with internet access.  He shouldn't be very powerful, but he is.

Maybe we should be a little worried.

1996 is the year that the Eugenics War ended in the Trek timeline killing 37 million.  The same year Dolly the Sheep was born in ours.

Thirty years later in 2026 WW3 begins killing 600 million.

Just random chance?
