North Carolina state Sen. Chuck Edwards defeated Rep. Madison Cawthorn to win the Republican nomination for the state's 11th congressional district on Tuesday, according to a Cawthorn campaign spokesperson who said the congressman called Edwards and conceded the race.
Why it matters: Cawthorn's loss comes after an avalanche of scandals that have plagued the 26-year-old incumbent, which led GOP leaders across the country to doubt his ability to serve in Congress.
- Cawthorn briefly flirted with running in a congressional district that included the larger Charlotte media market last year before changing his mind.
- Cawthorn's struggles led U.S. Sen Thom Tillis and two of North Carolina's top legislative leaders to endorse Edwards.
- Former President Trump seemed to support Cawthorn but has stopped short of issuing an outright endorsement, though Cawthorn did appear at a Trump rally last month.
Catch up quick: Cawthorn aggravated higher-ups in Congress by alleging, without evidence, that his colleagues used cocaine and invited him to orgies earlier this year. He later told House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy that the claims were untrue and "exaggerated."
- He also riled Republicans by calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky "a thug" during a campaign appearance.
- He is facing legal trouble after attempting to go through airport security with a gun last month — the second time he has done so.

Mega MAGA Madison Cawthorn Goes Down!
That it is that close is kinda disturbing.
Meh. The primaries are always nutjob-heavy.
Kind of shocking that he conceded so early.
All eyes are watching if Oz is for real, lol.
Hopefully not.
It's neck & neck at the moment, they are statistically tied while Barnett,
although far behind looks like she will take the Philadelphia County and suburbs.
Lt Governor Fetterman is currently the favorite to beat
McCormack or Oz.
I heard Fetterman had a pacemaker installed.
Not yet, but it is definite that he needed one for a while and will have one by the end of the week.
I hope he has a quick recovery. I like him. He is different.
6 foot 8 inches different, lol,
He had the pacemaker put in today, SP.
He hasn't called me to verify that yet, lol.
Is he the fella from Pittsburgh that used to be a mayor of one the towns around there?
He is right now Lt Governor of PA.
Sorry, every time I see or hear fella, my mind adds a tio.
Where I come from a fellow is a person one respects and identifies with. A fella is a man of dubious character who makes ones skin crawl without necessarily specified reasons.
As in, "None of my fellows trusts that fella"...
Where do you come from, JBB?
Good, Cawthorn is awful
That's an insult to 'awful', lol.
I guess Oz is too close to call.
I think that picture of Cawthorn in lingerie was a bit of evidence that Cawthorn had been invited to some freaky parties.
Has anyone here been watching the series "Gaslit" on Starz? It's a fictional telling of the Watergate scandal largely from the point of view of an imagined John Dean character (eventhough John Mitchell and his wife Martha are played by the stars of the show).
The reason I ask is that a very freaky GOP insiders orgy is depicted in one of the episodes that has already aired.
I guess this sort of thing has been going on for a long time.
whatever they try to project on their opposition, is something they've already done in real life.
That's not kinky shit he was involved in.
... not in the cult he belongs to.
Madison Cawthorn's ground floor opportunity.
Is there a part of you that feels badly for the man?
I am glad he is going to be gone but his story is a sad one.
I think I always feel badly for disgraced individuals.
And yet, somehow he only lost by 1 1/2%. What is going on? Do people just automatically vote for the incumbent no matter how terrible he is?
That would seem to be arcuate. Combine that with how little of the electorate actually participates...
One the one hand he likes to party while wearing women's lingerie. On the other hand he likes to bring loaded guns into the Capitol Building and onto Airplanes.
Tough call, Earle. Maybe we should give the other guy a shot? Maybe he will party wearing body armor?
Because I would rather not see Donald run the only thing that concerns me is how he takes these types of races where he backs someone. If they win will he think he is more likely to win if he runs, therefore more likely to run? If the person he backs loses will Donald feel more compelled to run himself? I can say what I think a logical person might think but logic is not always Donalds best friend. Or maybe I am just overthinking this, maybe it is Makers Mark time.
It's five o'clock somewhere.
Madison Cawthorn Calls For Rise Of ‘Dark MAGA’ In Wild Rant After Loss
It sounds like he was talking about a new star wars movie.
Come to the dark side...
Maybe Darth is still alive in the dark mega side of the force.
