President Biden is helped by U.S. Secret Service agents after he fell trying to get off his bike to greet a crowd on a trail at Gordons Pond in Rehoboth Beach, Del., on Saturday.  Manuel Balce Ceneta/AP

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. — President Biden fell when he tried to get off his bike at the end of a ride Saturday at Cape Henlopen State Park near his beach home in Delaware, but wasn't hurt in the tumble.

"I'm good," he told reporters after U.S. Secret Service agents quickly helped him up. "I got my foot caught" in the toe cages.

Biden, 79, and first lady Jill Biden were wrapping up a morning ride when the president decided to pedal over to a crowd of well-wishers standing by the bike trail. Biden, who was wearing a helmet, took the spill when he tried to dismount, apparently falling on his right side and rolling on to his back before being helped up.

President Joe Biden pedals his bike towards a crowd at Gordons Pond in Rehoboth Beach, Del., Saturday. Biden fell from his bike as he tried to get off it to greet the crowd.  Manuel Balce Ceneta/AP

The president quickly collected himself and spent several minutes chatting with people who had gathered to watch him bike. Biden did not need medical attention and is "fine," according to a White House statement.

The Bidens are spending a long weekend at their Rehoboth Beach home. They marked their 45th wedding anniversary on Friday.

Could that have been an omen?

There was a time when press photographers had integrity, for example the time that FDR fell coming down the steps exiting an airplane, and every press photographer lowered their cameras and refused to record the incident.

When I was riding my horse in a parade, someone set off a firecracker near by.  It startled my horse and he slipped and fell, throwing me off.  He didn't bolt but the crowd further added to his anxiety as people rushed to help us.  For shit and giggles, I had recently taught him how to bow so I had him do it while exclaiming "And for our next trick.....".

It might also be possible that some people that don't really care too much about politics come to places like this to see how the extremes are so dug into their own trenches they are completely incapable of understanding that a different point of view is possible.

But maybe not

Absolutely correct, very useful for road touring, racing and mountain biking

but hardly necessary for the kind of biking that Biden would do.

Says the guy who said he never used them?

I have had them on a 1972 Schwin Tourer & 1978 Peugeot for 45 years

of club road biking, only recently removing them after moving to the suburbs of

Fort Worth where I have to ride the streets or city designated paths shared with

walkers and runners, stopping way too frequently.

The second time I fell because of rude drivers or runners

I went straight home and removed them.

Somehow I doubt that Biden was planning on entering a bike race or doing some bike mountain climbing.  As for just riding a bike at his age, since I'm capable of doing it, for sure he is.

I can only recall falling off a bike 3 times.  The first time was when I first got on a bike and was just learning how to do it, the second time was in Bermuda when I was on a rented electric bike and I lost control of it, first time on a powered bike, and the last time was about 15 years ago here when I was speeding much too fast on a path and ahead of me were 4 guys walking beside each other in the same direction as me ahead of me and I rang the bell, shouted, and they didn't move aside and I steered into the bushes, fell off and dislocated my elbow.  That didn't stop me from riding a bike.

Your problem is that you read "both sides" (i.e. claiming the parties are equivalent in all ways) into everything.   Get a grip John.

By the way, Trump deserves ALL the criticism he receives.

No he does not; that is irrational.   People make false/unsupported allegations about Trump too such as being peed upon by Russian prostitutes.   A false allegation is wrong even if applied to an abysmal character.   For example, Stalin does not 'deserve' the false criticism that he was a pedophile even though Stalin is among the absolute worst human beings in history.

"I got my foot caught" in the toe cages.

Actually, both feet were already out of the toe cages when he fell. His left foot was already on the pavement, and his right foot was out of the cage and almost on the pavement.

Toe cages and other pedal accoutrements are used to enhance a cyclist's foot retention, cadence, and speed. At the slow, leisurely pace Joe bikes, he really doesn't need them, IMO, but to each, his own.

Under the right circumstances, gross incompetence could cause a PotUS to be removed from office:

Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office , the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Better hope that Biden remains as PotUS because next in line is Harris.

Well, he likely knew that there would be hyper-partisan people jumping on this as proof that he's ready for the nursing home.  For some, anything less than a full-twisting double backflip dismount from his bike after completing a triathlon wouldn't be good enough.

Biden has 'white-lied' (and worse) throughout his career.   Not a great quality but also typically harmless.   Certainly you see the reason why he would seek to smooth out any rough narratives (partisan politics are ugly).
