By the timeChristmas arrives I am totally sickof seeing Christmas stuff in the stores. Some people where I live put up Christmas decorations right after Halloween!! EEK!!
I recall that for a while I "stood on ceremony" and when someone said "Merry Christmas" to me I replied with "Happy Chanukah" to them, which left most of them totally confused. Now that I'm more mellow in my years I simply respond with "And a Happy New Year to You." There's no longer any point in making a point, because when someone wishes you a Merry Christmas it would rarely be with anything other than good intentions.
I prefer to say "Merry Christmas", but if I am speaking to someone that I know isn't of the Christmas persuasion, I say "Happy Holidays", which includes those christian faiths that don't celebrate Christmas. I say "Happy Hannuka" to my neighbors, who are Jewish, and "God Bless You" to all, pretty much.
My thought, even if you're an atheist, I'm not, and "God Bless You" means that I hope that either God watches over you or that 'fate' is kind to you, whether or not you believe in God. Furthermore, anyone that gets bent out of shape over a cheerful well wish, has got more problems than me. I tend to avoid saying anything to them, other than a "Take Care!".
I do a bit of all of the above, I Say "Merry Christmas" to my Christian friends and "Happy Hanukkah" to my Jewish friends. Everyone else? If they say something first, whether it's "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas", I just say, "You, too.". If I say anything to strangers, it's "Happy Holidays".
I have always said Merry Christmas...I don't care much for Political Correctness.
I guess I'm just set in my ways...Merry Christmas has been said for as long as I can remember.
And Merry Christmas to you!!
That's very considerate....
This is what got me on NV in the first place lol
I think this is a very common sense thing.
If you know that someone is Christian, wish them Merry Christmas
If you know that someone is Jewish, wish them a Happy Hanukkah
If you are unsure and you are not working in a store say whatever you want.
If you are a clerk in a store, probably better to wish Happy Holidays.
Displaying Christmas decorations etc. in stores before Halloween drives me crazy!!
It's just wrong...IMO..
I totally agree. Just commercialism at its worst.
All good points.
At it's VERY worst!!

when someone wishes you a Merry Christmas it would rarely be with anything other than good intentions I think so too..
I got this from a friend and it seemed appropriate to share here
I always have and always will say "Merry Christmas.
Good one!!
Good for you!!
Best answer here.
Why not include everyone ?
Well, then, you could always say "Bah, Humbug!" (You don't have a deceased partner, I hope.)
LOL....
Niibaa' anami'egiizhigad, Aabita Biboon.
I hope that clears up my feelings on the subject.
uh.......absolutely!!
Translated, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
I kind of thought so!!

AMEN!
I dont discriminate between well wishes. I'd much rather receive a nice greeting of any kind than "fuck off"
Well done Dowser!
Good one Miss!
Oh no Miss....This is ''clean speech month''...You'll have to wash your mouth out with soap.
ROTFL, hold on, that's a little boy...Come on Miss, do it right.
I too am looking forward to Festivus. We could have the Airing of Grievances right here on Newstalkers. Oh wait, we have that here every day.
Good one Miss.
I'm sure you do !!
Isn't that the truth??
Though it may have taken on a different meaning now, didn't the word Holiday originally mean Holy Day?
I believe so..
Thanks, Perrie!
Sigh! Everyone seems to enjoy complicating things these days...
Happy Holidays is fine and even better to say the exact holiday if you know the person's faith. I guess for the atheist it would be Happy New Year.
For an atheist maybe..."Happy Day" ??
Not original with me, but things would go so much smoother if we followed the following protocol:
It all pretty much boils down to using common sense,,,,
I do a bit of all of the above, I Say "Merry Christmas" to my Christian friends and "Happy Hanukkah" to my Jewish friends. Everyone else? If they say something first, whether it's "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas", I just say, "You, too.". If I say anything to strangers, it's "Happy Holidays".
That sounds like a good "plan".
