Memphis braces for violence as debt ceiling looms and an incoherent Biden asks "Where's Doug?"
“Doug knows, Do —,” Biden said haltingly, before launching into an attack on House Republicans, claiming: “Look, here’s the deal … They want to cut your Social Security and Medicare. Now, this is the God’s truth. It’s almost unbelievable.” Contrary to Biden’s remark, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said repeatedly this week he doesn’t want to cut the social safety nets.

Isn't it interesting that whenever something that may be embarrassing to the administration, or the left has to be reported to the people that it gets dumped out on a Friday afternoon? Today we have two bombshells. One is the bodycam of the Memphis police shooting of Tyre Nichols and the other is the police video of the strange assault of Paul Pelosi. The former could be a pretext for violence as it involves death of Tyre Nichols, a Black man who died at the hands of five former Memphis police officers, who are now charged with second degree murder. We don't know much about the details except that it involved an altercation after a traffic stop, flight from police and then a second altercation.

You say that you haven't heard much about it?

This may be why: Hear are the former officers in happier days:

Then will come the release of footage showing the attack on Paul Pelosi, which was ordered by judge Stephen M. Murphy Wednesday afternoon.  San Francisco District Attorney's Office has fought it every step of the way. The bizarre incident left Paul Pelosi with a fractured skull. He was attacked after the police arrived!

The debt ceiling debate has begun, though it is without Joe Biden. Biden said he will not negotiate. House Republicans want some form of budget cuts or some kind of fiscal responsibility. The mess stems from the $6 Trillion in spending during Biden's first two years. Speaker McCarthy may be on solid ground by simply asking for financial accountability for the American people.

Our illustrious leader travelled 10 miles today to visit Rep. Don Beyer's Virginia district. Biden seems to have forgotten a few things, one may have been Prevagen and the other was Don's name. Biden called Beyer by the name “Doug” four times during a confused & muddled speech on the economy.

“Where’s Doug? Congressman?” “He’s around here somewhere,” Biden said as he searched the crowd. “Oh, there you are. Doug, thanks for the passport into town. Doug and I have something in common, we both married way above our station.”

"Biden made a series of errors in his remarks Thursday.Bloomberg via Getty Images

“I’m probably the only non-rail guy who’s walked that tunnel,” Biden added. “No, I’m not joking … last time I walked it, they still had lights that were on a string hanging down, leaks in the roof — folks, 150 years old, nothing has been done to it. Everything has to slow down. And there’s a great worry that part of it could collapse.”

Biden also claimed in his remarks that COVID-19 vaccinations were mass-deployed by his administration and not by former President Donald Trump “because the other guy and the other team didn’t think it mattered a whole lot” — despite the Trump administration overseeing the rapid development and initial month of deployment of vaccines."

The Week:

Biden judicial nominee ridiculed after failing to recall parts of the Constitution:   You have to see it to believe it!

Sales Tax Plan: Republicans in the House of Representatives appear divided over a proposed national sales tax that would replace income taxes, with  Democrats  using the issue to attack the GOP. The Fair Tax Act introduced by Representative Earl "Buddy" Carter would  abolish income, payroll, estate and gift taxes  and propose a 23 percent national sales tax, but the effective rate would be 30 percent, according to the non-partisan Institute of Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) think tank.

The GOP's 30 Percent Sales Tax Plan Is Tearing the Republican Party Apart (msn.com)

DOJ frustrated with Biden: "Some Justice officials have been frustrated at times by certain decisions the Biden team has made. For example, weeks after the Justice Department told the Biden team that they would be reviewing this case, the president's team searched the Wilmington home and didn't tell the Justice Department until after they found classified material," Reid said.

Fourth-quarter gross domestic product better than expected: "Fourth-quarter gross domestic product, the sum of all goods and services produced for the October-to-December period, rose at a 2.9% annualized pace, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had expected a reading of 2.8%."

GDP Q4 2022: U.S. GDP rose 2.9% in the fourth quarter, more than expected even as recession fears loom (cnbc.com)

Ukraine to get scaled down Abrams Tanks: "The Abrams tanks that the United States intends to transfer to Ukraine are the modern M1A2, not the A1, which the US military has in stock, but they will also be stripped of their so-called secret armour, which includes depleted uranium. The M1A2 Abrams has more advanced optics and a control system than the A1, which allows for more accurate targeting, and a separate thermal camera for the crew commander, allowing him independent identification of targets in any weather and battlefield conditions."

US will send Ukraine more advanced Abrams tanks, but without "secret armour" (yahoo.com)

What Have We Learned?:

For the first time in seven years, a bill is going to come to the floor of the House of Representatives under open rules. The congress has returned to transparency and the chance for all it's members to participate in the process. The House Intell Committee has also been restored to the position of importance that it once held. The coming weeks shall be very interesting.

In the meantime, the only person who thought the country was moving in the right direction and the same person who called taking classified documents "irresponsible" appears to have taken classified documents out of a security skiff as a Senator. The same man who gave us inflation and 1% growth last year wants to announce his candidacy but will now have to wait until after his State of the Union address, continues to smear his opponents as well as half the country. What we would all like to know from the man who once claimed to be transparent is what were the classified documents found in his residence related to.

Recently, the nation's most important battle tank was approved for another expensive weapons contribution the Ukraine. The Ukraine has just gone through a recent shakeup over corruption. The question now arises over how the money the US has been giving the Ukraine has been spent? Let us not forget that ever dollar we spend on this proxy fight in the Ukraine is another dollar that could have been spent on our own military. Every weapons system sent depletes our own military.  The Center for Strategic and International Studies just released a report on the U.S. defense industry and military aid to Ukraine. It found that we are leaving ourselves unprepared for our own challenges. We should count our blessings that Republicans have retaken the House and that finally there will be accountability.

It should be an eventful afternoon. We will be getting critical information on two crimes, but late on a Friday when many will be tuned out. One of them was the result of a frustrating police chase conducted by cops who represent the remnants of our once secure thin blue line, which has been decimated by officers retiring and/or leaving the profession.

The other is an enigma that thus far has defied common sense.

"Biden's promise to send tanks delayed by lack of inventory: reports. Pentagon spokesperson confirms U.S. does not have 31 M1 Abrams tanks in stockpile. The New York Post reported that  Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh  confirmed that the U.S. does not have enough of M1 Abrams tanks in its stockpile to send over to Ukraine at this time."

We don't have enough of anything at this point.  The proxy war in Ukraine has emptied our equipment reserves.  Good time to be a defense contractor, for there's going to be a massive increase in defense spending.

I read that report and it surely seems strange since the Marine Corps has abandoned the use of MBT and in the past two years returned over 300 to the Army I believe that there are a few more to be turned over this year. Also the tanks that will be sent to Ukraine will be the most modern date versions since they are new construction.

That is true and it could be part of the reason that we are not sending the current SEV models. We currently have over 3,500 Abrams M1A1 in stock.

The next generation MBT was introduced in Oct 2022 by GD known as the AbramsX. Lighter, faster uses 50% less fuel, and has a dual running system of a combustible engine and a silent battery movement for totally silent moving it will be equipped with AI and have a crew of 2 or 3 instead of 4.

and a silent battery movement for totally silent moving

Isn't that an oxymoron? It is a tank after all. Even if they cut the noise of a combustible engine they still have the noise from the treads, turret, etc. Just normal movement is going to create noise.

The Ukrainians are very adept at taking on new equipment in the middle of a war and a quick study. I believe that the current training for a US soldier is around 22 weeks both classroom and field work. Being that many of the Ukrainians are experienced tankers this may cut the time by some margin.

The Leopard will be in the field long before the Abrams along with the many variations of the T72 and the Polish PT91. Poland is sending 60 of the PT 91 and Leopards. Morocco has sent an unknown number of T 72s that have been up armored and 20 of them were sent to the front two weeks ago.

Spain just announced today that it will be sending 20 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.

AbramsX: A main battle tank for the next generation, the AbramsX technology demonstrator features reduced weight for improved mobility and transportability, delivering the same tactical range as the M1A2 Abrams with 50% less fuel consumption. The AbramsX’s hybrid power pack supports the U.S. Army’s climate and electrification strategies, enhances silent watch capability and even allows for some silent mobility. With a reduced crew size and AI-enabled lethality, survivability, mobility, manned/unmanned teaming (MUM-T) and autonomous capabilities, AbramsX can be a key node in lethal battlefield networks and serve as a bridge from Abrams SEPv3 and SEPv4 to a future tank."

The Leopard will be in the field long before the Abrams

Scholz said in the German parliament on Wednesday that his government will send 14   Leopard tanks to Ukraine, wrapping up months of deliberation and several days of tense negotiations with NATO partners. “The training of the Ukrainian crews is to begin quickly in Germany. In addition to training, the package will also include logistics, ammunition and maintenance of the systems.”

In the meantime:

"Russia pounded Ukraine with missiles early on Thursday (January 26).

A morning rush hour assault killed at least one person in Kyiv, and left critical infrastructure damaged in the Black Sea region of Odesa, according to officials.

A spokesperson for Ukraine's State Emergency Service said a total of 11 people had been killed during the Russian strikes throughout the course of the day.

Kyiv region resident Valentyna says her home was destroyed in the attack.

"I got out of the house walking over glass splinters. Then I pulled glass splinters out of one foot. I got high blood pressure and (medical workers) gave me an injection. I don't know, I don't remember how I got out of the house. Everything was in rubble."

Sadly this is how Russia wages war. That and the use of paid mercenaries like the Wagner Group which has been suffering enormous amounts of KIA/WIA.

The US has been training Ukraians with Leopard and combined arms movement and attack for a few weeks in Germany.

Having the tanks is great but must be coordinated with Infantry and IFV and artillery all of which is pouring into Ukraine. The Swedish are sending 50 CV90 IFVs which is designed to fight in the heavy forest of Sweden and are perfect for the eastern front in Ukraine which is forested.

In addition Denmark and the Baltic countries are sending self-propelled cannons which will make the new Ukrainian battalions complete and deadly.

The number one cause of obesity is genetics ,” Stanford told CBS’ Lesley Stahl.

She's obviously not read what the CDC says about obesity ...

Many factors can contribute to excess weight gain including eating patterns, physical activity levels, and sleep routines.  Social determinants of health , genetics, and taking certain medications also play a role. Genetic changes in human populations occur too slowly to be responsible for the obesity epidemic. Yet variants in several genes may contribute to obesity by increasing hunger and food intake. Rarely, a specific variant of a single gene (monogenic obesity) causes a clear pattern of inherited obesity within a family. [1] ,   [2]

In a speech at the party meeting in Florida, McDaniel admitted she was “mad” about the bruising loss of the Senate after Democrats triumphed in  two crucial Georgia runoffs , and admitted the party faces an uphill battle.

I watched what the Memphis government released.

I assume they are withholding some more police footage from at least one of the officers that tackled the suspect at the second location. As well as the two officers that made the initial traffic stop at the first location.

At least three or four officers stated they thought the suspect was on something as he resisted at least 3 pepper sprays (that did more harm to officers than the suspect it seems); and at least 2 tasers.

There was also mention of the suspect trying to grab one of the officer's guns; but with the video footage provided I couldn't see it. Then again when they are wrestling on the ground all the camera picks up is moving dark blob. Also on the 4th video the camera is dropped on the ground- so a good portion of the altercation is missing outside of sound.

Yes the suspect resisted arrest; but the officers were completely out of line. Since when are kicks to the head of a suspect wrestling on the ground part of SOP? Using a baton to hit the suspect repeatedly while two officers held him supposedly trying to cuff him? Slapping (I can't call it anything else) a suspect while on the ground repeatedly? Then again when cuffed? Or threatening to break a suspects arm?

How many officers does it take to cuff someone even if they are on something? With 4 or 5 you would think they would have been able to pin him in any position they desired; and then cuffed and shackled him. The guy was a tall stick. The officers heavy set (maybe too heavy set).

Video two looks to be from a camera mounted to a street light; or someone's home security camera. No sound; but one hell of a lot of milling around after the incident was done. It looked like officers with medical training arrived; but spent their time talking to the other officers. It wasn't until a few minutes before the ambulance arrived that they actually started to assist the suspect.

Again, resisting arrest is moronic as it gets. But unless the other body cam footage shows the suspect trying to grab a weapon; or more forcefully resisting- the officers deserve to be charged for manslaughter at the very least.

Also, not sure in the first video but the officer stating twice "I hope they beat his ass" needs to be questioned as well.

And they did it all on film!

The intitial traffic stop was supposedly because of reckless driving. I wish we had some of that footage, not that it would make much difference, but it may explain some of the anger. This began with anger.

The other thing I'd like to know is what are police protocols in the city of Memphis?  When you look back at the initial stop, it is as if the cops wanted to avoid taking physical custody of the suspect. They could have positioned him on the ground face down and handcuffed him had they had firmly taken control of him by hand. Instead they were using all of their secondary devices like pepper spray etc and never got control of him and thus he easily fled and a second chase began.

There is no defense for any of it. What is clear to me is that we have lost the experienced, professional police we once had. Those who were emasculated, disrepected and defunded. We are now left with anything we can get. In this case bullies with badges.
