I will be hosting Thanksgiving Dinner with family. A tradition we have is when we sit at the table, before we eat, we hold hands and everyone tells what they are thankful for.
I would really love to hear some traditions from NT"s!! Come on and share yours!!
Created the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Brought the NFL to the nation on Thanksgiving Day Spearheading the involvement of instant replay in the officiating of the game Gave the head referee a microphone for penalty announcements Shortened the play-clock Helped to develop a six-division wild-card playoff system Originated the idea of using a sports anchorman for major athletic events on television Built the NFLs first bona fide scouting system Moved the official game time to the clock on the scoreboard Moved hash marks toward the middle of the field to open the field up more for offenses Developed the sudden-death overtime concept for breaking ties Implemented the in-the-grasp rule to protect quarterbacks Enabled quarterbacks to stop the clock by throwing the ball directly into the ground Made defensive linemen's head slaps illegal.
The menu and company might change but Thanksgiving football is now eternal.
I'll be eating a turkey sandwich & drinking a beer alone on the couch tomorrow, while rooting for my Cowboys. "This yearsGrand Thanksgiving Tradition". Lol
I seethe Lionsstarted playing Thanksgiving day games in the mid 30's & Dallas didn't jump in until the mid 60's.
Just looking at the history it seems like Detroit used the day as a way to boost their local image and the Cowboys used it, 30 years later, to help boost their national image.
Now both teams are Thanksgiving favorites.
The Detroit Lions always host a Thanksgiving Day gamesbecause they started the whole thing in 1934. The Lions had trouble selling tickets because this was before the NFL was the biggest sport in the country. They hosted the Bears on a Thanksgiving Day game and had to turn away fans at the gate and the tradition was born.
The Dallas Cowboys started hosting Thanksgiving Day games in 1966 as a way to get national publicity for the then young NFL team. Thanksgiving Day exposure helped earn them the name Americas Team. Now days there is a third Thanksgiving game between random teams who do not get to play on Turkey Day every year.
Tooling around, looking for the history of Thanksgiving football I stumbled on to this bit of trivia;
when Abraham Lincoln was in office he declared the last Thursday of November Thanksgiving Day in 1863. That is when it finally became a national holiday. Every president since Lincoln has also declared Thanksgiving a national holiday.
In 1941 Congress set the national holiday of Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of every November. This reversed a decision by President Roosevelt to celebrate Thanksgiving on the third Thursday of November to give people more time to shop for Christmas.
Durn, Detroit was truly waaay ahead of their time.
We (my daughters and I) are in Milwaukee right now. Later, we will be serving a Thanksgiving feast to those who cannot afford a feast on their own. 4th year in a row.
That's a wonderful thing to do for our fellow man....I have served meals in a homeless shelter for many years, but I haven't done it on any holidays. Have a great Thanksgiving!!
