First-grader says Washington school denied him free lunch

Xavier, a first-grader in Washington state, says he was told by a lunch lady that he could not eat from a sack lunch because he had a zero balance. (Q13Fox.com)

A first-grader who is part of a free lunch program at his Washington state school said he was denied a meal last month when a lunch lady told him, "Guess what, you can't have lunch."

Q13Fox.com reported Tuesday that the boy, identified by his first name, Xavier, was sent home from school hungry on Oct. 20 because he had a negative lunch balance. He said that the class was eating from a sack lunch, and when it was passed to him, the lunch lady told him he could not eat.

Cascade View Elementary in Snohomish, Wash., said it is looking into the matter.

The 7-year-old's father said he is on food stamps and his son's lunch balance should be paid by the program. The school told the station that even if the boy's balance was negative, he should have received a cheese sandwich and unlimited fruits and vegetables.

"Feed them," Eric, the boy's father said. "They need to eat. They need to concentrate. They can't concentrate without eating."

Eric said he is considering pulling Xavier from the school.

Yes it is but now that government has created a society of people that think they are entitled to the earnings of others we are going to have people thinking somebody else should feed their kids.

The only way we are going to get this father to realize it is his responsibility to feed his kids is to stop carrying his water.

We don't know the reason for them being on food stamps...a child should never go hungry!

Or maybe he should sell his big screen TV and go buy some tuna fish. What we do know is he's looking to pass his responsibility on to others.

To speculate why this child's dad cannot afford to buy his lunch is immaterial. Vast and various possibilities don't square with the FACT the child was hungry and a school employee wouldn't give him food. That's despicable!

We treat stray animals better than we treat our fellow man.

I don't know why the family gets Food Stamps......maybe he was in an accident and became disabled, or got stricken with a disease that prevents him from working, but, I do know that lunch room person had no right to deny that child food!!!!

Lunch lady = Soup Nazi

Feed the kid; slap the dad. Frankly, he should be saying thank you to the public in general for helping to feed both he and his child. Calling the pressto complain aboutone missedcheese sandwichequates to'biting the hand'.

Capitalism creates poverty.

Uh, sure; as we know, there was no poverty until Capitalism reared it's ugly head.

It is inevitable and baked into the system that has workers compete to be the one who accepts the lowest wages.

It's inevitable that survival of the fittest will ensure that the fittest survive; whether I, you, or anyone else likes it or not.

Btw, the lunch lady shoulda gave the poor kid lunch, though I would consider the school and her both, personally responsible for doing a piss-poor job feeding kids that day.

Then pray tell John, what economic paradigm do you think would be both more beneficial, and workable in American society? This kid didn't get his lunch that day because of oppressive capitalistic restraints, but because of poor training and work by the school and teacher. Non-capitalism wouldn't solve stupid.
