NYC Mayor Calls for Modifying Sanctuary City Status
We should not be allowing people who are repeatedly committing crimes to remain here and we cannot collaborate with ICE in the process,"

Finally a voice of some level of reason from the Big Apple.

I used to love visiting New York - the shopping, the athletic events, the shows and even the crowds were breathtakingly entertaining.

That is no longer the case since the city has been flooded with illegal immigrants - I miss NYC at its finest

After a series of   well-publicized crimes   allegedly committed by migrants, Mayor Eric Adams appeared to support a modification of laws that make New York a sanctuary city.

Adams said on Tuesday that migrants who commit serious crimes should be deported and the city should be able to communicate with federal ICE agents.

"We should not be allowing people who are repeatedly committing crimes to remain here and we cannot collaborate with ICE in the process," the mayor said during a news conference.

It followed comments Monday evening when the mayor said the city needs to modify the sanctuary city law.

"If you commit a felony, a violent act, we should be able to turn you over to ICE and have you deported," Adams said Monday.

Existing laws prohibit the city from cooperating with the federal immigration authorities if a foreign national has been charged with a crime but not convicted.

The New York City Council has exhibited no interest in modifying the laws, which were strengthened in 2014 during the de Blasio administration, but some Republicans welcomed the mayor's remarks.

"It's a welcome change," City Councilman Joe Borelli said.

A City Council spokesperson reiterated that the council has no plans to revisit the sanctuary city laws when contacted for comment by ABC News.

The Legal Aid Society expressed alarm.

"What Mayor Eric Adams seeks would result in local law enforcement being able to transfer New Yorkers merely suspected of a crime to ICE, upending local criminal court proceedings while perpetuating family separation and dividing communities," the group said in a statement.

From the article -

"It's a welcome change," City Councilman Joe Borelli said.

"We should not be allowing people who are repeatedly committing crimes to remain here and we cannot collaborate with ICE in the process," the mayor said during a news conference.

My view

NYC has suffered in safety, quality of service to its citizens and businesses and people are leaving the city and the deficit being created by out of control "sanctuary spending" should not be fed by federal money.

It's sad to see a city abandoning it's principals in the face of a little adversity.

The city is in crisis - financially, in a safety sense and if things do not improve soon tourism will surely suffer

It is hardly "a little adversity"

Then they can keep their silly sanctuary policy and it won't hurt the city or state at all, right?

Just tell the taxpayers they need to cough up a few more tax dollars to house feed, clothe, educate, and medicate aliens, all problems solved without making the state and city beg for a federal handout.

Sanctuary Shithole status is what your city voted for, Sanctuary Shithole status is what you get.  You want to rid the city of criminals, abandon your Sanctuary Shithole status and rescind the so called laws barring LEOs from working with ICD.

The New York City Council has exhibited no interest in modifying the laws, which were strengthened in 2014 during the de Blasio administration,

Since they will be getting out of jail due to no bail policies maybe they should be dropped of so they can thank the New York City Council properly.

Perhaps ICE should be waiting for them as they are released

I wonder how practical that would be.  First you would have to have ICE folks at every police precinct and second you would have to know who they are.  It seems the police have been instructed not to cooperate with ICE.

Actually ICE would only need to be at the arraignment courts (in each borough) to pick them up after they are released by the judge on their own recognizance

Pretty practical and easy considering the benefit to the city

I would think that would be very man-hour intensive as ICE doesn't know the immigration status of each and every person brought in to an arraignment court. If the police are not providing that information, how does ICE get it?

Only one problem with that, we have a piece of shit for president who cares more about illegals than the safety and security of the citizens he swore to protect.

There is no mention of illegal immigrants committing crime, much less them being repeat offenders.

NYC's DA Bragg endangers public safety with soft-on-migrants approach (nypost.com)

The DA’s office   let five migrants walk   after their arraignment in the wake of last week’s outrageous caught-on-video assault on two cops in Times Square.

So homeless thugs who entered the country illegally and with no community ties simply got released — and proceeded to leave the state.

So you won't admit your first source was a lie?  So you still don't have many, many, many illegals being repeat offenders.

What a waste of time.  You've got nothing to back up your claims.

Wow, i didn’t think adams had a lick of common sense. Looks like i was wrong. I don’t agree with deportation because they will be back in no time, thanks to biden. Plus, venezuela will not take their criminals back, so deporting vene’s is a no go. Hard core prison sentences, or, if applicable, the death penalty, but we are talking about ny so that’s not an option.
