He was late for his State of the Union address last night, but that may have been because there were pro-Palestinian protestors along the route. When he finally did get to the House chamber Joe Biden delivered what was clearly the most divisive speech in the history of the State of the Union address. It didn't take long to realize that the speech was aimed specifically at the far left of the democrat party. The very people the Biden camping are worried about. The speech checked every box that progressives wanted checked and even tossed a few bombs.
The speech touched on Ukraine, the Israel-Hamas war, the economy, reproductive rights, prescription drug costs and border security. The speech was delivered rapid fire and Biden was shouting throughout as if he was advised to show some energy, instead he seemed angry. The democrat members of congress applauded everything he said including his swipe at the SCOTUS, which was another new low for a president. I was very proud of Speaker Mike Johnson who sat most of the night behind the president, just shaking his head.
As to the points Biden tried to make, many were untrue or without context. Biden claimed that under his leadership “wages keep going up,” but over the over the past three years, wages are down when adjusted for inflation. He also claimed that the more recent U.S. inflation rate of about 3% is the “lowest in the world!” But several nations reported lower rates than the U.S. in December. He also claimed to have “cut the federal deficit by over one trillion dollars,” although declining deficits have mostly been the result of expiring emergency pandemic spending. He claimed that he had created a “record” 15 million new jobs. His 14.8 million new jobs is a record for any president in the first three years, but it’s not the highest job growth rate that any president has achieved in that period of time. He omitted context of a Trump comment following an Iowa school shooting. He also claimed that he was “cutting our carbon emissions in half by 2030.” That’s the U.S. goal, relative to 2005 emissions, but studies suggest current policies will not reduce emissions by that much.
Then there was his childish interaction with Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene. Greene kept chanting "say her name," in reference to Laken Riley, a nursing student from Georgia killed by an undocumented immigrant, whom Biden never mentions. The Biden team was prepared. Next to the podium was a piece of paper with her name on it. Biden in mid-sentence looked at Greene, picked up whatever it was and misread the name, calling the victim Lincoln Riley and sadly adding "How many have been killed by legals?" It was another low point for the State of the Union.

It was a terrible night for the nation and whether the Biden campaign knows it or not, they didn't calm voters about the age question, nor did they persuade anyone on the all-important immigration crisis. What they may have accomplished was mending a few fences with the far left of their own party.

He also noted that there would be bait for the Republicans in attendance and that Republicans should resist the temptation to respond. I think the current Speaker did a fairly good job of keeping the troops in line.

F ormer House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been slammed for insisting that President Biden “should have said undocumented” when he referred to Laken Riley’s alleged killer as an “illegal” at his State of the Union address.
The California Democrat made the eyebrow-raising remark during an interview on CNN after the president’s fiery speech.
“Madam speaker, one of the clearly ad-libbed moments was during the section about immigration,” CNN anchor Dana Bash said before playing a clip of Biden’s remarks.
