Bonhoeffer‘s Theory of Stupidity

Dietrich Bonhoeffer argued that stupid people are more dangerous than evil ones.

This is because while we can protest against or fight evil people, against stupid ones we are defenseless — reasons fall on dead ears.

Bonhoeffer's famous text, which we slightly edited for this video, serves any free society as a warning of what can happen when certain people gain too much power.

original

Dietrich Bonhoeffer died for our sins. We were cowards; he was not.

We continue to be cowards, refusing to recognize the evil that intends to destroy everything.

Ostriches.

What if one is both evil and stupid?

The age of the earth is 6,000 years old.

The earth is flat.

Keep your money in a saving account.

All three of these ideas are incredibly stupid, but not dangerous.

Bonhoeffer was hanged. That's dangerous.

Exactly, especially those that know little about fascism and even less about me.

I think Bonhoeffer was confusing stupidity with fear.

What leads you to think that?

The German people weren’t stupid.    At least not by my definition.    Far from it actually.   The Versailles treaty was stupid.    It served Germany up on a platter for Hitler (Fascism) with promises of prosperity in very dark, post WW-1 times.

Once established, Hitler used fear to subjugate the German people.    I don’t equate that with stupidity.    Many, many intelligent Germans feared that knock on their door.    And not just Jewish citizens.
