LOL.. I subscribe to Sirius XM and I have more than 5 different channels I listen to all the time. Coming up with a list of only five songs is impossible for me to do. I like all sorts of music, about the only type I don't care for is rap. Just never got into that type of music, but I listen to just about everything else.
You have 'triggered' me with 'Comfortably Numb.' It will go all day with me now. : ) As I listen to it. . .there is a chill going down my back right now.
Dream Theater - Take the Time (Live in Bangkok 2008) (UHD 4K)
I heard so much going on in 6.1 . that I could not let it stand without going to see who this band is (live). And, what a treat for the ears and eyes. I have not heard of the band. First, the drummer caught me; then the lead singer unexpectedly caught me up with his appearance, then the organist, and finally,. . . breathlessly finally that lead guitarist. What a feast for the ears!
What?!!! Where does he develop the stamina to play so forcefully. And the coordination too! Tom Sawyer was my first RUSH song that blew my mind on RUSH!
Further, he played it almost exactly how Neil played it. One little difference is that he plays the bass doublets (the quick double bass strokes) with both feet (left foot then right foot) whereas Neil (and most adult drummers) would simply bounce a double beat with his right foot. But he certainly nailed all the hard parts.
Don't answer me by Alan Parsons (just rediscovered this. Was reading my diary from 40 years ago while travelling through Europe and I had written it down how much I loved it)
The long and winding road by the Beatles..
Sorry don't know how to put the video clips on my mobile to post here..
The interesting and curious thing about Willie Nelson is. . .his singing voice. I kid you not, . . . his singing voice is not something I should gravitate towards, because in my 'world' of music. . . Mr. Nelson was an old man already when I first heard him sing: 'To All The Girls I've Loved Before.' Now then, he does have an interesting voice that once you tune in on it you lock in on it. That is a really nice rendition of a song, The Warmth of the Sun. At the end of it. . . I literally want it to continue. . . .
Of course, the Beach Boys are fantastic. Just fantastic. Willie, you're fantastic too—period!
WHAT?!!! Ten years old? What are they 'feeding' these kids these days for that to happen? 'Slash' come get this child and take him under your superb wings. And if he can do 'that'. . .who can he become?!!! Onset of puberty. . .here we go!
Little geniuses are born everyday out there. Is it my imagination or do we see more proteges nowadays because of nature or "Youtube" as an outlet for (such) talent?
No, I did not read that one. I see your link and am looking at it now. Thanks! Youtube channels arecertainly making winners and incentivizing the youth (and old folks too) financially out there to be best at what they are 'born' to be!
I don't know if anyone else has made any of these choices, since a lot of you don't bother to post the titles and artists so all I get is a blank, but here are my choices, and if anyone wants to hear any of them they're all bound to be on YouTube.
Leonard Cohen (when he was a young man) singing Suzanne
Neil Young singing Helpless, with The Band in The Last Waltz
The Beatles (or George Harrison alone) singing While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Eric Clapton singing Wonderful Tonight
Andrea Bocelli (with Sarah Brightman) singing It's Time to Say Goodbye
I would like to add one symphonic piece, The 4th movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony - The Ode to Joy The best example is in the movie 'Copying Beethoven'.
Great article John! Some really excellent music posted here!
I went through a bit of a punk rock / rockabilly phase during high school and first part of college. Always partial to The Clash. One of my favorites was their cover of Vince Taylor's "Brand New Cadillac". The original was great enough, but The Clash did it justice on their London Calling album in 1979.
My stepbrother's favorite, may he rest in peace! He was several years older than me and played in a local band, and they covered quite a few Head East tunes back in the day.
Honorable Mention
He's Sure The Boy I Love - The Crystals
meh, I can't do 5 songs, or probably even 5 albums...
Stairway to Heaven.... Led Zeppelin
Summertime.... Janis Joplin
Whipping Post.... Allman Brothers Band
Brothers in Arms.... Dire Straits
Starship Trooper.... Yes
Only five is hardly fair. Let me pick a hundred and I'd live longer.
Hell yeah...
I think 5 makes it more interesting.
I agree though, most people have dozens of favorites.
Picking only 5 is almost impossible.
I think this more interesting than just asking people what some of their favorite songs are.
I could come up with a completely different 5 myself.
Dozens only? I cross genres and periods just thinking about all the songs I have rocked, swayed, performed to, and in life slow-danced!

Five favorites.. just can't do it.
Ella, alone or with Louie Armstrong. Love this arrangement.
Ella Fitzgerald - Summertime (1968) (youtube.com)
That’s weird, Comfortably Numb is on the album The Wall, not Dark Side of the Moon.
Whoever posted it to the web (whoever Hellosempa is) made a mistake.
You have 'triggered' me with 'Comfortably Numb.' It will go all day with me now. : ) As I listen to it. . .there is a chill going down my back right now.
1. Born to Run
2. Whole Lotta Love
3. Voodoo Chile
4. Gimmie Shelter
5. Heard it Through the Grapevine

That's a keeper.
Kinda reminds me of Ronnie James Dio - Holy Diver, etc...but much more technical and rich in sound. I like it!
You probably can guess this, but I am attracted to the drumming ... in this case this is likely Mike Portnoy (an amazing percussionist).
Indeed! Portnoy could rock! Neil Peart of course always blew my mind with his abilities. Remember this kid with his Peart cover?
Yeah, talented little shit.
Peart was part of the inspiration for the current crop of super percussionists.
What?!!! Where does he develop the stamina to play so forcefully. And the coordination too! Tom Sawyer was my first RUSH song that blew my mind on RUSH!
"Sweet Child O Mine"
Guns N Roses
July 20, 2013 - Age 6
Freewill and TiG, it's him at 6: Avery Drummer. He is now 17 years old by the way, and has a website dedicated to his art:
On his webpage, this 'kid' has played with legends of rock. I am 'totally' impressed by his art/musical 'vocabulary,' and sticking to a purpose.
Further, he played it almost exactly how Neil played it. One little difference is that he plays the bass doublets (the quick double bass strokes) with both feet (left foot then right foot) whereas Neil (and most adult drummers) would simply bounce a double beat with his right foot. For you:
Rush Working Man Rare Early Live Performance
(The song picks up the pace (and the drumming) as it goes along.)
Neil Peart's Ultimate Drum Solo I Letterman
Big difference between John Rutsey and Neil Peart.
Yeah. At the relative period, not just age, eh?
The lead singer has a most beautiful voice. Most beautiful. Though you would not believe he sounds like that to look at him.
"What a RUSH!"
Morning...
Albatross by Fleetwood Mac
Shine your light on me by Nova
In the air tonight by Phil Collins
Don't answer me by Alan Parsons (just rediscovered this. Was reading my diary from 40 years ago while travelling through Europe and I had written it down how much I loved it)
The long and winding road by the Beatles..
Sorry don't know how to put the video clips on my mobile to post here..
Morning...thank you for that John..
my pleasure
Sorry, but I have to cheat this time: I cannot lead this song off-I just can't:
Bluesy through and through. That second one is quite interesting and surprising to hear.
It's known as ''Throat Singing'' Few people in the world do it. The Mongols, some indigenous people of Russia, and the Inuit of Alaska.
Indigenous people of Russia? I am getting a lesson while here.
Wolf Totem is fantastic, I bought the CD...
Apologies to Mr. Og, but I couldn't leave this performance out.
Morning...
So many great songs...
So many great memories...
How lucky we are to have music in our lives....
I can't even pick only 5 Beach Boys songs, but I'll try.
i love it, but
That is an absolutely beautiful song, but then, I love every song on that album.
And a few more. Sorry I can't possibly pick only 5!
That is wonderful. I've never heard that before. Thank you very much, John.

Listen to Willie's version of Stardust. He has an angel voice...
Kavika posted Stardust by Willie Nelson at 12 above. It is a great song. Willie's pitch is marvelous. I like him. Respect.
I just found this on YouTube. It is GUARANTEED to blow your mind.
he's a star
He has his own YouTube channel. Amazing.
That was good!
Maybe we will see and hear him on stage in a few years
I have no doubt. I'm hoping that as he evolves and grows in music he also becomes a composer/songwriter. Just imagine what he could produce.
WHAT?!!! Ten years old? What are they 'feeding' these kids these days for that to happen? 'Slash' come get this child and take him under your superb wings. And if he can do 'that'. . .who can he become?!!! Onset of puberty. . .here we go!
Jimi is back with us.
As I mentioned above, I really hope he becomes a composer/songwriter. He could be legendary.
Little geniuses are born everyday out there. Is it my imagination or do we see more proteges nowadays because of nature or "Youtube" as an outlet for (such) talent?
There are, CB. YouTube is a great source. Did you happen to see the CNN article I posted a week ago about the 15 year old science genius?
No, I did not read that one. I see your link and am looking at it now. Thanks! Youtube channels are certainly making winners and incentivizing the youth (and old folks too) financially out there to be best at what they are 'born' to be!
Freebird and American Pie because they are long
I can't drive 55 cause I can't
Squeeze Box Song because it is funny
If that ain't country cause of what the next line is
Wow, this is hard... I am going to have to think about it
Everything That Touches You is the greatest.
-------
My favorite Association song
Stayin' Alive keeps me going, need a dose of the Bee Gees on a regular basis. I like this version with the cute blonde with the big smile
(2) Bee Gees Stayin' Alive Remix - YouTube

Anyone remember these guys?
Head East.. Very nice! I had Flat as a Pancake in my cassette collection that always was with me
My stepbrother's favorite, may he rest in peace! He was several years older than me and played in a local band, and they covered quite a few Head East tunes back in the day.
1. Time In A Bottle by Jim Croce.
2. Amazing Grace by Judy Collins.
3. Up Around The Bend by Credenece Clearwater. Revival.
4. Sounds Of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel.
5. Hey Jude by the The Beatles.
With Fruitcakes by Jimmy Buffet as honorable mention.
Thank you Sir!
Fruitcakes! Gosh I love that song!
5? Wow... Sure, ok...
I have been waiting for a long time to use this picture and Mr. Frost this is the time.
To be clear, I still love "Slipknot" but I don't know what part of me wants to be in that crowd. . .or running far away from the show!
Got a friend who always says, "It smells like the inside of the dude from Slipknot's mask in here!"
As others have said, difficult to narrow down to five but here goes:
Amazing Grace - Petatonix
Roy Orbison/KD Lang - Crying
Janis Joplin - Me and Bobby McGee
Beach Boys - In My Room
Kitaro - Silk Road...this is an album so I'm cheating a bit
Amazing Grace
Coal Miner's Daughter
Good Vibrations
We Are The World
America The Beautiful
