Ohio's Governor   Mike DeWine , a   Republican , defended Haitian immigrants in his state during a Sunday interview after former President   Donald Trump, the GOP's presidential nominee, and his running mate Ohio Senator   JD Vance, have amplified discredited accusations against the community in recent days.

Trump and Vance have   repeatedly promoted claims   that Haitian immigrants, who are in the United States legally, have been "eating the pets" of their neighbors in Springfield, Ohio. During Trump's debate with Democratic nominee Vice President   Kamala Harris   on ABC News on Tuesday, Trump   said dogs and cats were being eaten   by the migrants, despite local officials already saying there were no credible reports of this happening.

One of the debate moderators,   ABC   News' David Muir, quickly fact-checked Trump's claim and told viewers that the outlet had spoken to Springfield's city manager about those allegations who told them that "there had been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community."

During an interview with ABC News'   This Week , DeWine was asked about the claims amplified by the Republican presidential ticket and conservative influencers online.

"Do you see any evidence, as governor of the state, that Haitian immigrants are eating pets?" host Martha Raddatz asked the Ohio Republican.

"No, absolutely none," DeWine responded, who went on to speak favorably of the immigrant community, pointing out that they are in the country legally—and are not undocumented as many conservatives have suggested.

"I think it's unfortunate that this came up," the governor said. "Let me tell you what we do know though. What we know is that the Haitians who are in Springfield are legal. They came to Springfield to work. Ohio is on the move, and Springfield has really made a great resurgence, with a lot of companies coming in."

DeWine explained that the Haitians are praised by the companies they work for.

"What the companies tell us is that they are very good workers. They're very happy to have them there. And frankly, that's helped the economy," he said.

"These are positive influences on our community in Springfield and any comment about that otherwise I think is hurtful and is not helpful to the city of Springfield and the people of Springfield," the Republican said.

Springfield has faced a wave of bomb threats since Vance and Trump began amplifying the discredited claims about Haitian immigrants in the city. Hospitals, government buildings and local public schools have all been targeted, causing significant disruptions and concerns within the community.

IMO America's "Free Speech" needs some limitations.

The Republicans must realize that they're going to lose it all in November, so they're out to destroy America.

The first Haitians arrived to Springfield in 2018 because Springfield was begging for help.  Others were made to Wait in Mexico starting in December 2018.  All complied with Trump's rules and entered the country lawfully under TPS.

TPS for Haitians existed long before 2018

El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nepal & Nicaragua: TPS valid as long as preliminary injunction ordered by district court in Ramos et al . v. Nielsen et al. , 336 F.Supp.3d 1075 (N.D. Cal. Oct. 3, 2018) remains in effect.” What Is Temporary Protected Status (TPS)? (immigrationhelp.org)

Most Haitians can still enter the US legally any time they complete the paperwork and pass the background checks.

The Biden Administration extended the Haitian TPS 18 months in part due to requests from the city of Springfield and Clark County of Ohio.

Haitians have been eligible for TPS since 2010.

Individuals eligible for TPS under Haiti’s new designation must file an application for TPS with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services within the registration period that will begin upon publication of the  Federal Register  notice. This includes current beneficiaries under Haiti’s TPS designation, who will need to file a new application to register for TPS to ensure they do not lose TPS or experience a gap in coverage. Individuals filing for TPS may also request an Employment Authorization Document and travel authorization. All individuals applying for TPS undergo security and background checks as part of determining eligibility.

Former Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano initially designated Haiti for TPS in January 2010 based on extraordinary and temporary conditions within the country, specifically the effects of a 7.0-magnitude earthquake. In 2011, Haiti’s designation was extended, and the country was also redesignated for TPS at the same time. Haiti’s designation was subsequently extended again for 18 months in 2013 and 2015, and for an additional six months in 2017.

In January 2018, a   Federal Register   notice announced termination of Haiti’s TPS designation effective July 22, 2019. Four separate lawsuits challenged that termination. Due to court injunctions and other rulings, TPS for Haiti remains in effect pending case outcomes. Existing TPS Haiti beneficiaries retain their TPS and TPS-related documents through October 4, 2021, and DHS will continue to extend the benefit and documents if required to comply with court orders. These beneficiaries are also eligible to apply under the new designation of Haiti to receive TPS for the entire 18-month period that will be described in the soon-to-be published   Federal Register   notice.

The local businesses seem to prefer the Haitians.

“We want more jobs in our community, and in order to fill those jobs, some jobs need to be people who are not originally from here,” Jaime McGregor, who owns the manufacturing factory McGregor Metals in Springfield, told PBS. McGregor told the outlet that about 10% of his workforce, about 30 employees, is Haitian.

“I wish I had 30 more,” he said. “Our Haitian associates come to work every day. They don’t have a drug problem. They’ll stay at their machine. They’ll achieve their numbers. They are here to work. And so in general, that’s a stark difference from what we’re used to in our community.”

And apparently there is no limit to how many times one can explain the legal entry process under TPS regardless of the Administration under which they entered.

Therefor the idiots here, at work, in the hood, will all blame Biden for every Haitian allowed to stay in the USA under TPS since 1990 when the Immigration ACT set up the TPS program.

And DJT, Donnie Jr and The VP Candidate formerly known as James David Hamel will continue to repeat the rumors of Haitians eating pets and chasing geese in the parks of Clark County in spite of the lack of evidence attested to by their Republican Governor, Clark County commissioners and the Mayor of Springfield.

I don't know how DeWine can continue to support Trump.  They differ on so much.  It must be because that is the only way he can survive politically in a red state.  He has to pledge allegiance to the cult leader.

He probably wont-privately (in the voting booth) and that may be a 'blessing' all its own. A point to other republicans. . . you can be rid of Crooked Donald if you don't VOTE FOR HIM in the privacy of the voting booth. Just. Don't. Do. It.  You will get your party back from the 'hell-scape' promised by Donald and his sycophants.

There's a very similar sitaution re: Nikki Haley. She's no fan of Donald Trump. But she has to be cautious in her criticism of him (that is if she ever wants to be elected again to higher office in South Carolina).
