The Schumer Shutdown

The Schumer Shutdown
“Funding the government should be a bipartisan effort, but Republicans chose a partisan path, drafting their [continuing resolution] without any input — any input — from congressional Democrats,” Schumer (D-NY) said on the Senate floor Wednesday. “Because of that, Republicans do not have the votes in the Senate to invoke cloture on the House CR. Our caucus is unified on a clean [CR through April 11] that will keep the government open and give Congress time to negotiate bipartisan...

The House just passed a clean continuing resolution bill, which the Senate has until midnight Friday to pass it or the government will be shut down. With Republicans holding a 53-47 advantage in the Senate, and legislation needing 60 votes to overcome a filibuster, at least seven Democrats would need to support the spending bill, which passed the House in a partisan fashion 217-213 Tuesday night.

Senate minority leader is threatening to shut down the government. Democrats have lied about the bill even before the bill was filed last Saturday. They have made claims that it would cut Medicaid even though it is not mentioned in the bill. There was an attempt by dems to renegotiate the bill, but House Speaker Mike Johnson announced the lower chamber of Congress would recess until March 24, leaving Schumer with the option of accepting the House bill and keeping the federal lights on over the objection of progressive activists, or rejecting it and putting the nation’s capital on course for the 11th partial government shutdown since 1980.

It is now all on the democrats. Will they shut down the government?

What about federal workers?  (sniff, sniff)

The deadline approaches tomorrow.

Vladimir Putin, dressed in fatigues, visited Kursk to cheer the troops trying to eject Ukrainian forces from the Russian border region. Putin listed demands for the peace talks which are:  no NATO membership for Kyiv, an agreement not to deploy foreign troops in Ukraine and international recognition of Putin's claim that Crimea and four provinces belong to Russia.

Space X, because of a technical issue, was forced to postpone a mission that would return two NASA astronauts who have been in orbit for more than nine months. The Space X rescue mission could have been completed under president Biden, but Biden didn't want it.

Inflation eased more than analysts expected last month, driven by a drop in airfares.

ICE investigators have searched the internet for campus protesters who may be supporting Hamas. Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and Columbia graduate, was the first they arrested. Protesters gathered outside a Manhattan courthouse yesterday for the first hearing in Khalil’s case. Administrators at Columbia University told students who were not U.S. citizens to avoid publishing work on Gaza or risk punishment from the Trump administration.

Trial-court judges have blocked parts of the president’s agenda with injunctions that apply across the country. Some legal experts are seeking to end what they consider judges exceeding their authority.

Good morning and welcome to the news.

A bill was introduced earlier this month by Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., to "withhold certain apportionment funds from the District of Columbia unless the Mayor of the District of Columbia removes the phrase Black Lives Matter from the street symbolically designated as  Black Lives Matter Plaza , redesignates such street as Liberty Plaza, and removes such phrase from each website, document, and other material under the jurisdiction of the District of Columbia."

'The View' co-host Sunny Hostin says she takes BLM mural removal 'personally' | Fox News

I am pleased to report that the nasty eyesore is being removed from the street.

I am pleased to report that the nasty slogan is being removed from the street.

Although I agree the slogan is racist I don't agree with forcing them to remove it.  It reminds me too much of pressuring towns to take down statues.

That is an interesting thought.

Are you saying that statues erected to appease southerners is just like streets being painted with slogans to appease political ideologues?

And the taking them down (or painting over) to appease others, especially ones that are not part of the community.  But what I really have an issue with is withholding funds to get it done since they are not doing anything illegal.  Of course withholding funds for getting in the way of ICE is different IMO.

That could be a bad precedent.  And the democrats would likely pick up on it.

Good points.

That could be a bad precedent.  And the democrats would likely pick up on it.

But the precedent was set years ago. During the oil crisis in the 70's they threatened to withhold federal highway funds from states who didn't toe the line. It was done again against Montana to force them to lower the speed limits on interstate highways. So it's not like this is a brand new idea.

Only if they feel they can get people to blame the Republicans for it.  Funny how they go from resist everything to we need to have a bi partisan bill.  They can't seem to make up their mind.

That is going to be a tough one.

They are risking the midterm elections.

Right.  So now they have to determine how they will spin voting for something they all claim is bad.  And the worst part of that is we will see more Schumer on TV.  Will someone please by that fool a set of glasses with progressive lenses.  He looks like a fool.

(Bloomberg) -- Mexico’s government said that as much as 90% of exports to the US could benefit from the tariff relief deal the two nations reached Thursday, significantly reducing the risks to a slowing economy that is heavily dependent on trade with its northern neighbor.

US President Donald Trump exempted Mexican and Canadian goods covered by the North American trade deal known as the USMCA from 25% tariffs until April 2.

Sheinbaum told reporters after the call that she highlighted her government’s efforts to help stem the flow of illegal drugs across the US border, saying Mexico had made progress in meeting Trump’s demands.

Mexico Says Up to 90% of Exports to US Can Enjoy Tariff Relief

She finally got it!  Now both her and Trump are heroes to their nations.

The CR is a gift to Democrats with the Biden levels of spending it maintains. Why they oppose it other than partisan childishness is a mystery.

But shutting down the government except for critical employees isn't much  of a threat to me. Seems like a good way to find out who is actually necessary.

Olivia Julianna, a Houston activist and social media personality, quelled all rumors that she had gone on a hunger strike in protest of USAID being axed. The rumors come on the heels of the influencer going viral for her drastic weight loss.

The abortion rights activist took to social media this week to sarcastically reveal that she had not gone on a hunger strike.  Rather, she was "down 50 pounds" as she "couldn't afford to eat in Trump's economy."

Whoever she is she is not any more of a "Social Media Personality" than you or me or Buzz. I never heard of her. Nobody cares if she loses a few. Why should they? What is your point? Right wing "Social Media "Personalities" say outrageous hateful shit all the time! [deleted][]

They need 60 votes in the Senate to pass a budget bill.

That means democrats may shut down the government.

Absolutely true, all that needs to be done is look at the final vote to see who voted for what. Of course there are way too many sheep in the citizenry who will believe whatever their party says.

Their allies in the media will have to sell it as the opposite of what it is.

As I say that midterm looms large for the dems

Schumer's caved. I guess having congressmen tweet their opposition two hours after they died wasn't a winning strategy.   One of the quickest folds ever.
