Dow sinks more than 700 points.

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

US stocks were sharply lower Friday as investors digested souring consumer sentiment and inflation data that showed an uptick in one of the Federal Reserve’s key gauges, underscoring the delicate state of the economy as businesses brace for President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

The Dow tumbled 750 points, or 1.77%, on Friday. The broader S&P 500 fell 2.1% and the Nasdaq Composite slid 2.8%.

All three major indexes were on track to close the week in the red. The S&P 500 is down 5% since this year and on track for its first losing quarter since September 2023.

Trump is a moron.   When will his supporters get a clue?

As I have noted for years, a PotUS can do very little to improve an economy (or stock market) especially when in good shape.   But a PotUS can damage same.   Trump is showing us all how a PotUS can single-handedly harm a robust stock market and booming economy within a matter of months.

So, again, when will his supporters get a clue?

They have not yet felt the pain.   It is all academic at this point, the damage needs to be reified.

The will potentially get a clue when they realize higher prices and when (if) they can manage to break free of the cultish mind control Trump has them in so as to comprehend that this is the result of Trump's gratuitous actions.

It will get worse as long as Trump supporters keep defending him.   Things will have to get sufficiently bad so that Trump supporters feel the pain and realize the pain is a result of gratuitous actions by the idiot they elected.

As long as Trump has sufficient support, he will keep doing what he is doing and Congress will continue to be spineless (fear of Trump using his cult to harm their reelection bids).

What I see happening is that Trump is turning allies into enemies causing detriments to all western people (including Americans themselves) while the Asian nations are solidifying their relationships with each other to better the life of all Asian people.  Personally, I'm glad to be in China instead of even my home country.

By the way, when I say 'all western people (including Americans themselves)' I exclude the multi-millionaires and billionaires that Trump could be benefitting, and including himself.

Unfortunately leaving the top line blank helped Trump to win.  Such voters may have thought that both were equally bad, but I bet that a lot of then now realized the mistake that they made.  As I already have said, I blame the American women for for the result because they did not vote for their own personal best interests.  Bad mistake on their part.

Unfortunately leaving the top line blank helped Trump to win.

I saw a TV interview of 4 Muslim-Americans from Dearborn. One left the top line blank because he thought Biden (and Kamela Harris) were very "Pro-Israel:. Another thought the same about Harris, so he voted for Trump.

Another voted for a minor party candidate (One way to be ineffectice!)

I don't "hate" anyone wasn't raised that way (I know that makes me a minority in this country these days), but I certainly did not think that either Harris or Trump was an acceptable choice for President.  I guess I could have written a name in, but I didn't I left it blank.

Harris lost so many traditional democrat votes - that is what elected Trump

Unfortunately leaving the top line blank helped Trump to win.

Probably contributed along with the mass of moderate Democrats that left the Harris' parade because they felt abandoned.

But I can still look at myself in the mirror and know I made a choice based on my values - I felt neither them should be president and I voted accordingly.  I now live with the consequences of my moral choice.  Living with the results of our choices (good and bad) is what being an adult is all about.

My vote mattered in all the down ballot races- Senate, the House, state elections, local elections, levy issues - so yeah my votes counted.  Plus I retained my self respect by not voting for a candidate that I didn't believe in - either of them.

But we have a group of people here to were very clear before the election that such a vote did not count. When I stated that I could not vote for Trump and would not vote for Harris, I was told very clearly that I was throwing away my vote and allowing Trump to win. They didn't care that I vote my conscience, I needed to vote as they told me.

Logically that is the case.   Not voting does nothing to stop Trump.   Voting for Harris does.

They didn't care that I vote my conscience, I needed to vote as they told me.

Voting your conscience is your right.    Choosing to not vote against Trump, however, did nothing to help prevent him from winning the election.

That was the argument.

Now you twist it into some victim scenario where you were told how to vote rather than an argument for why anyone who did not want to see Trump in office should have voted for Harris.   And the argument for why Trump was and is unfit and never should have been allowed access to the power of the presidency.

It was not my intention to accuse anyone of being a "hater". Rather I was jsut trying to point out that there was a relatively large number of people in the recent election who didn't like either candidate.

People on the Internet like to create "clever" labels, memes, etc, so they coined the phrase "double haters" to label people who didn't like either candidate.

The last time I voted “my conscience” I decided i would never do it again.    The guy I voted for got nearly 20% of the popular vote and ZERO Electoral college votes.

ZERO

The only way I will ever do that again is if and when the stranglehold the two party system has on the process is somehow overcome.    Yes I know, here is where you say if enough people vote third party, yadda, yadda so I’ll repeat what I said earlier.    Perot got almost 20% of the popular vote.    20%.    I really don’t see that happening in todays much more polarized political environment.    And even if it does, it doesn’t help with the electoral college hurdle.

So to each his own.    You sleep better because you voted your conscience.    I sleep better because I don’t anymore.

C’est la vie …..

I n my experience it always gets better. What's difficult to predict is...when?

A few weeks, months-- or years?

Maybe Trump will get scared of a major defeat during the Midterms and roll back tariffs and take other actions designed to help the market? (But it may be too late...my guess is that if left unchanged his policies will result in a major landslide for the Dems).

And if you have some money in the Market-- what actions should you take?

And if you have some money in the Market-- what actions should you take?

Some people panic and sell some great stocks-- at too big of a loss.  Some people buy gold. Both were good strategies-- if they were done earlier. Now its mostly too late.

Still might not be a bad idea to buy a little bit of "defensive" stocks-- for example certain utilities. The good ones do OK in a bad market (and while you are waiting for the economy to improve, you collect dividends)

If you are collecting dividends,  you can "Dollar Cost Average" by using "DRIP" ("Dividend Reinvestment Plans")..

Finally, trading "drivatives" (this gets a little technical). Instead of buying a stock outright, sell a Put on a stock you want to own. doing that you automatically buy it at a lower price (if its "put" to you) but more importantly you collect income.

And of course selling Puts brings in income....

And of course selling Puts brings in income....

I forgot to mention: selling Covered Calls. This strategy is is great in an unpredictable market. It generates income,  and if done properly you come out ahead.

Every trade has a possible downside of course. But with Covered calls the only downside is that you miss out of large gains if the market takes off (not likely now).

Well actually you can lose money if you are using really lousy stocks.....(but this is not a good market to increase risk--- only buy solid companies).

The Dow tumbled 750 points, or 1.77%, on Friday

Not good for sure, but certainly not unprecedented.

The DJIA dropped 10,682 points between Dec 2021 (41,571) and Sept 2022 (30,879) .  It did recover to the Dec 2021 level by July 2024.

It dropped more that 1.77% in a day at least 7 times in the last 5 years , not even including the much larger daily drops in 2020 during the pandemic economic shutdowns.

The point being that it certainly has its ups and downs and I just hope it doesn't continue downward.  Uncertainty is the biggest factor, so to the extent that Trump's policies continue to create market uncertainty, he is shooting his chances for a strong rebound in the foot.   Time will tell.
