I find all of this to be very rude, sad, and scary! When I'm with my daughters, they NEVER take out their phones. I'm sure they do when they're with other people, but I threatened to smash the phonesif they ever pulled them out when they are with me! I know, I'm just old fashioned and mean...OH WELL ! lol
I told my grandson 'why am I taking you out to your favoirte Thai restaurant - so you could look at your phone. Let's go home so you can look at your phone." He put it away. If mine rings when I am hanging out with someone, I shut it off.
I fear that eventually , people will never have to leave their houses... they will be able to solely via texting ,or internet, and never have to leave their homes.
There have been studies that show a definite correlation between the amount of time spent on electronic devices (be they computers, cell phones, etc) and rates of depression in children and adolescents. I can believe it.
People have friends online-- and sometimes get to feel pretty close. But IMO there's a different quality to a relationship between online friends (where you have never met in person), and in person relationships.
amb...I agree, a virtual hug just can not beat a REAL hug, nor can a Smiiey face can bring a smile to my face like a genuine smile from a friend or a loved one.

IMO, rudeness, irritability, & overall nastiness are on the rise.
And I think what was originally thought of as a positive (the internet allowing groups with "similar interests" to connect) has led to this increase. This is especially true where the similar interests are those hate groups and groups that engage in political extremism.
This negative change in society has led to a change in people's representatives as well-- look at the bitterness,...and overall nastiness in Washington.
I refer to all of this "modern technology as."a double edged sword"
A good description-- although while there are "two edges"-- I sometimes wonder if one edge is considerably larger than the other!
I was originally a bit of a "techie", and an enthusiastic early adopter of the Internet. And I thought it would have a tremendous positive impact on the world. Lately I'm beginning to think the negatives may outweigh the positives.
I like this guy.
I have to totally agree with this video.

I never have mine on!! #1. I hate talking on the phone
#2. I only use it for emergencies.
Just don't do it to me when we are out to dinner. I may have to discuss the matter with you.

He has a GREAT idea-- just say no to cell phones when you're interacting with people!
