John Lopez, Sculptor

4045_discussions.jpg?width=750

South Dakotan sculptor John Lopez creates life-sized scrap metal sculptures with a uniquely Western American twist. In his hands, old discarded farm equipment is recycled into sculptures of iconic creatures from the American West like a bison, a horse plowing a field, or a Texas Longhorn.

Lopez already had a career as a bronze sculptor, but after creating a family grave for his deceased aunt using scrap metal, he began creating recycled metal sculptures out of found or donated pieces of metal as well.

Those are really cool. Did you see the "wing" on the first buffalo?

That stainless steel horse is just amazingly real looking. It looks like it might run away any moment.

There is a short story by Roger Zelazny, probably my favorite science fiction writer, that has a mechanical horse in it. When I saw that horse, the story came to mind. Darn it, I can't remember the name of the story. I must have read it 30 years ago, but that stainless steel horse by Lopez is almost exactly what I imagined when I read the story. I imagined the mechanical horse as I was reading the story and I was surprised to find that photo. It's always fun to have something you imagined like this show up in real life.

I don't know, Ambi. I couldn't find that title in his bio.
