GOP rep urges party to unite behind Speaker Johnson: 'This is bigger than all of us'

Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., says Republicans need to put 'bickering' behind them and stick together to enact their agenda by re-electing House Speaker Johnson.

Speaker-designate Mike Johnson, R-La., was re-elected to lead the House of Representatives on Friday.

The Louisiana Republican won along party lines during the first round of voting, a stark contrast to his predecessor's drawn-out, 15-round battle in 2023.

It comes despite saber-rattling by some conservatives who threatened to withhold support from Johnson in protest of his handling of government funding and several other issues in the 118th Congress.

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., who was part of an unsuccessful push to oust Johnson last year, was the speaker-designate's most vocal critic leading up to the Friday vote.

He told former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., on his new One America News Network program, "You can pull all my fingernails out, you can shove bamboo up in them, you can start cutting off my fingers."

"I am not voting for Mike Johnson tomorrow, and you can take that to the bank," Massie said.

Other detractors included members of the House Freedom Caucus like Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, who has expressed interest in chairing the influential House Rules Committee, the panel that directs terms for House-wide votes on legislation.

Johnson's allies warned in return that a prolonged House Speaker fight could delay Congress' joint session to certify President-elect Donald Trump's victory, slated for Jan. 6.

Johnson also had a key backer in Trump, who emphasized his support for the GOP leader hours before the midday vote.

"Good luck today for Speaker Mike Johnson, a fine man of great ability, who is very close to having 100% support. A win for Mike today will be a big win for the Republican Party, and yet another acknowledgment of our 129 year most consequential Presidential Election!!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social app.

Johnson wrote on X in response, "Thank you, President Trump! Today is a new day in America. Congressional Republicans must stay united to quickly deliver President Trump's America First agenda. Let's get it done."

His victory marks the start of his first full term as speaker. Johnson won the gavel in October 2023 after three weeks of closed-door talks following the ouster of ex-Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.

No one in their sane mind would ever vote Jeffries for speaker. We would be looking at another 2 years of dumpster fire shit show.

The new speaker is a fool who in his acceptance speech today hinted that "social warriors" serving in the Armed Forces is unAmerican. If that is true, one could wonder where 'Mr. Perfect' ever served in the military (non-combat or combat) to know truths and foulness of military life to fix his lips to state he has a mandate to DENY any citizen the right to serve their country. Speak up!

The notion that democrats are going to bow down to any republican house speaker who says that more tax cuts (for the rich) is the way to fortune for ordinary Americans is delusional. The contest/struggle begins in earnest!

It's surprising to me that he got it done in the first ballot. It seemed at first that this was going to be a drawn-out fight.

Unfortunately, the Democrats refusing to vote for anything other than Jeffries only reinforces the understanding that Democrats primary allegiance is to the party over the people.

I didn't like it when McConnel did it and I like it even less now. Allegiance to the party IMO will be the death of this country.

Then, let this country die. One-way politics (one-party rule) can not succeed. No 'side' is obligated to serve the other 'wholly.'

And where did I say that the Democrats had to 'wholly' serve the Republicans? The point you are ignoring is that the Democrats are in lock-step in voting as their party tells them to. Why is that in the best interests of the people of the United States?

It is not in the "interest" of the country to behave as if the minority party should be in "lock-step" with President-Elect Trump's and his republican party when they are pushing the country ENTIRELY into conservatism. Democrats are care about middle Americans and underserved people; republicans care about corporations and billionaire 'wish-lists.'

Don't know what that comment means. Please elaborate.

Our' country's citizenry is multicultural and diverse ethnically and racially since its inception—it needed to be in order to overwhelm the native people already here, and to [] that is a lie straight out of Hell. This country belongs to 'all' its citizens!

Therefore, a furtherance of 4.1.3 would help to clarify what is meant.

I was shocked.  But I have faith the Republicans will find some other way to shoot themselves in the foot before the midterms

Unfortunately, the Democrats refusing to vote for anything other than Jeffries only reinforces the understanding that Democrats primary allegiance is to the party over the people.

Watching them come up and say Jefferey's would work across the aisle is just lame posturing at best and out and out lying at worst.

Well he got absolutely nothing meaningful done in the time he has been Speaker up to now, perhaps over the course of the next two years with a majority in the House and Senate and a Republican in the white House he will be able to pass one or two meaningful pieces of legislation which actually benefit the common citizen.

Doubtful, but maybe

Maybe most of the Republicans got the message. Stick together like the Dems do.

Massie and his ilk can go pound sand, eat shit, and pout.

So no matter how stupid or harmful to the nation a piece of legislation or a process change might be, the only important thing is beating the Democrats rather than serving the interests of the nation.

No need to think just vote along party lines

Massie and his ilk can go pound sand, eat shit, and pout.

And in all cases be as graceful in victory as you have been in defeat.

I get it, thanks for the perspective
